Just a small historical quibble: The transition from the bow to the gun was precipitated largely by the firearm's user-friendliness. Even though the bow was more accurate and fired much more quickly than smooth-bore muskets, it takes a number of years to train an archer. Anyone can learn to fire a musket in an afternoon. By the end of the American civil war, guns were legitimately better than bows, but it took 400 years to get there!

In my opinion, a bow can be interesting as a sci-fi weapon, whether it's armed with arrows constructed from lasers, or a compound bow made with high-tech polymers, it's cool to see a character toting a stringed weapon in a time where lasers are the norm.

I never understood why bows became a symbol of dexterity, given how much strength you need to use one effectively.
@TheCreeperInc7 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the type of bow, the english longbow required so much strength that the skeletons of the archers had bone deformation because of the extreme pressures exerted on them because they trained their achers during their growt growth
@taiiat07 жыл бұрын
requires much more dexterity than swinging a sharp piece of metal. all relative. not that there isn't some art to using a Sword, but you can get a lot further with just brute force with a Sword than you can with a Bow.
@LimakPan7 жыл бұрын
Taiiat - start searching for videos on swordfighting or melee in general. You will be surprised, but everything is exactly the opposite of what you said. All you had to do with a bow is draw it back, which required a lot of strength and then shoot it in the general direction of the enemy together with however many archer the army had. There's no finesse or dexterity needed to operate a bow in a war setting at all nor outside it. When for example hunting, a good aim was needed, but it was all still in the arm muscles, as the bow needed to be kept steady even though the draw strength was usually around 350 newtons. In melee nothing was this easy as both sides are armed, both sides are defending themselves and even if you hit with a wild swing you're opening yourself up to get hit as well. Both before and after the introduction of plate armor, melee required a ton of knowledge on techniques and a lot of courage. There are thousands of medieval books on how to fight in melee that are still used today due to their validity.
@pyrrha71247 жыл бұрын
Pan Limak Can confirm. I shoot recurve bows for competition and training for half an hour by doing sets of 12 arrows in 2 minutes is enough to make my arm fatigued , trying to land an accurate shot beyond 1 hour training is nigh impossible due to muscle fatigue.
@taiiat07 жыл бұрын
thanks for the bias - swinging an object can get a lot further because you don't require to cut to be effective. it's a good way to but it's not required. see also: Greatswords - exta large metal baseball bats. it all requires much strength, that's aside from pairing that strength with things other than it.

Ahoy's animations are clean, simplistic and beautiful. The narration is done very well. His research is vast and his final work is extremely in depth. Yes, he may miss out some games here and there, but it's not like he can get everything. He chooses what he thinks to be the most important. It's absolutely amazing

What is most hilarious to me is that although the bow was discarded in war due to it's inability to provide enough propulsion, the arrow still has a niche use in modern militaries. A modern APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot) tank round is literally a large all-metal arrow fired at extreme velocity. Active armor does little to stop it too; the only real defense is more and denser armor. The arrow: the original kinetic penetrator, and now perfected to take down prey that nature could never create.
