"What kind of hoarding is this?" Procedural hoarding. It's an obsessive adherence to rules, and over-extension of those rules. Every room _must_ have plants. Every item _must_ be slightly covered by another item. Every fixture set _must_ match each other. _Always_ accent, and _always_ use gold. Put paintings next to _every_ window. Put _every_ photo in a frame. Etc etc. The specific details may change, but only within a constant rubric.

I think the problem with the bathrooms that immediately triggers a fear response is that they've COMPLETELY gotten rid of ANY furniture or extra stuff that they had to have used. Compared to all the other rooms that are just inundated with bullshit it's just eerie. It's so consistent that EVERY bathroom is devoid of toiletries and rugs and toothpaste and without having any visible cabinets that they had to have cleared out ONLY the bathrooms. Like maybe they needed the bathroom toiletries wherever they moved to and just brought them with them instead of just packing their toiletries separately. The only other option which makes more sense for rich people gives me psychic damage; if they didn't bring all the toiletries and stuff with them then they just threw everything away before letting the realtors take pictures to put it for sale. The bathroom toiletries were the ONLY thing they felt embarrassed about in this entire house.

Okay Mike and Fred, real question: Blue Lick Road, Christmas McMansion, or Groverhaus - which one would you live in for a year if you were forced to choose one?
@themastermindwithahat6074 жыл бұрын
But with all those pros and cons in mind, you also have to remember that all 3 options are almost irreparably fucked in some form or another-- Blue Lick Road is cluttered in a way that implies complete lack of organization or basic hygiene, Groverhaus is livable but completely baffling in its structure and questionable in its integrity, and of course Christmas McMansion is undoubtedly insane everywhere you look. If you're going to live in any of these places for a year, you're basically going to have to get used to their downfalls pretty quickly or suffer trying to fix them.
@thepicausno55614 жыл бұрын
Blue Lick Road 100%. Christmas hell absolutely is possesed by some eldrich horror and I fear that the Groverhaus will topple over with me inside. Blue Lick Road is the Tower of Babel for DVDs, and I can handle the lack of hygene.
@themastermindwithahat6074 жыл бұрын
@Heavy Metal Collector I will say the Kentucky thing is a deal breaker for me. I know it seems controversial, but I would honestly have to choose the Christmas McMansion. I think there's truly things about it that I can see myself getting accustomed to, among them the backyard, bedroom and downstairs bathroom. Of course I would throw away the Christmas shit immediately and renovate the weird rocky bathroom but it would still at least feel like a house.

I think these two houses are completely opposite. Whoever made Rococo Ranch loved their house and loved Rococo and (even if you disagree with their taste) knew how to combine these things. The wealthy hoarder is someone who has no idea what they’re doing, no real vision, and way too much money. It’s passion without means vs someone with an unlimited decoration budget without the skill or passion. I feel like the Rococo Ranch was some old couple who’ve lived there their entire life and gradually converted it over decades, possibly with their own hands.

26:00 If anything, the aggressive festivity makes this house way more appealing to me. From the outside, I immediately assume what these people are about. I get the impression that they consume just enough information they need to work their incredibly profitable jobs so that they can make money that they can spend on the preapproved consumer goods. These are the type of people who force customer service representatives listen to their observations or pressure waitstaff into laughing at their jokes; no imagination, just consumption. However, the interior leads me to believe that more is going on and I am way happier to have the inhabitants of this house in the world.

This gives off a deeply tragic vibe. Like, it's the house of a lonely couple who were very excited to have a kid and the wife was pregnant around christmas, though when January came they discovered that she had had a miscarriage. Grief drove her to revert to the happy times of the previous month, and her husband made no attempt to temper her enthusiasm for the season, as she was otherwise inconsolable. Rather than acceptance of the child's passing, her unprocessed sorrow turned into an obsession with christmas decorations that only escalated through the years. Now an older couple, the husband has become completely disassociated with his wife and spends as much time as possible out of the home, either at work or cheating on her constantly, while she has fallen so deep into the delusion that even her family distance themselves from her and she remains alone in this house, continuously becoming more and more cluttered but never any less empty. Beneath all the tacky garbage, I get the sense of a profound seasonal depression that has evolved into an all-consuming emotional void.
