@@etagged I had already known this. Just few weeks ago Ma beat Fan Zhendong 3-0 in the finale of Chinese trials. I’ve observed his new play style, not using unnecessary forehand killer from the backhand side so that he’s always ready towards the forehand side of the table. Also he used to place very rarely to the forehand side of the opponent during backhand to backhand rallies but now he’s mixing it. This way, he prevented Fan to anticipate the balls well and to place him towards the forehand corners.

If u got to build a table tennis character and max out every aspect of the game except BH counter explosive loop. you get ML. FH loop: 10/10 FH: push 10/10 (short/long) BH active block: 10/10 (which means no matter how explosive your opponent is, it wont' go through ML's backhand BH attack: 9/10 (suppose to be 8/10 but he have this weird shot where he pretends to push and suddenly flick which i haven't seen other player do; so it's +1) BH push: 10/10 Chop block: 1/1 it's a 1/1 since u have it or not. Pivot: 10/10 (BH to FH switch) Footwork: 10/10 Speed: 10/10 (maybe 9/10 since he lost a step compare to when he was in his 20s) Touch 10/10: rarely miss random balls, and can lob when needs be. Put difficult ball back on the table consistently like XX. Experience and mental fortitude: 10/10 Strategy/pace changing: 10/10. Can't win someone playing fast? np ML can play slow. Can't win someone playing slow? np ML can play fast.

Hugo is a top 5 player in the world, he is tough, fast and powerful. Beating him when being 34 yo proves how good ma long is, and considering his longevity, he is really the goat. He can play at this level for 2 or 3 years more if he stays motivated.

Hugo was just outplayed in every aspect of this game, only produced a few flares but couldn't match up. Have long admired ML's consistency plus his exceptional ability to identify opponent's "on-court" form and weaknesses then totally exploit/destroy them. At his age, there is NO other matching player in TT history at the same level but now FZD has improved so much as well. Just have to see who's got the edge now. It'll be cannon balls against the fire spitting dragon, explosive/Epic/Exhilirating/Excellent battle of 2023. @ 9:09 , point of the match, ML showed his fine ball control @ 9:15 and finally won that point, 18 excellent exchanges.

It doesn't matter if Ma Long win here or lose, i will say it, he doesn't need to prove anything, he is the GOAT and he is the legend, he wasn't called the dragon or dictator for nothing, and people saying he will win the third Olympics singles gold doesn't matter anymore, he might and he might not, but that won't change the history, we all want him to do it so he can retire at the best anyone in this sport can, we should just enjoy his art until he stops.

ML is too well-rounded, consistent, strategic and refined. Huge can attack seamlessly against other players but in here ML has successfully sealed Hugo's offense through effective serves and placements. Statistically it's just difficult to beat ML because he can generate massive speed and spin without sacrificing consistency. For players like Hugo, their physical is among the top but suffers in consistency.

Was a great game, but I did also feel like Hugo was less consistent in this match compared to other recent ones. Not sure if ML makes is harder in game, but also playing someone of that calliber might add nerves to the equation aswell. If Hugo starts to only loose to ML and FZD I'd say its not bad 😅

Calderano played his own style, wasn't dictated to by Ma, he made some outrageous shots. I didn't count, but he missed a lot too. So dialing it up to 11 is great for the fans, who want to see the spectacle, but it meant Calderano was always going to lose, as he couldn't possibly make nearly everything he went for.

Minha opinião sobre esse jogo, o H. Calderano está jogando em altíssimo nível e creio que ele irá em breve subir no ranking mundial, vamos aos detalhes que eu achei que o fizeram perder pra ele e pro Max Long. 1* Dos 44 pontos que o Ma Long teve na partida aproximadamente 10 a 12% deles foram bolas vencedoras o resto foram erros não forçados do Hugo, o que mostrou o quanto o Hugo perdeu pra ele mesmo. 2* O Hugo não deveria de forma alguma ficar na trocação de bolas com Ma Long, perceba que quando ele jogou na maioria das vezes no lado oposto que o Ma Long estava ele pontou, porque o Ma Long joga próximo a mesa e não se movimenta tanto quanto os adversários. O Ma Long errou pouquíssimo no jogo se mostrou muito consistente, o Hugo foi muito feliz nas pontuações que teve, o que fez com ele tivesse muito mais bolas vencedoras do que o Ma Long, e foi até agora o único a vencer 1 set do Ma Long, o que mostra o quanto ele está jogando em alto nível, torci e torço muito por ele melhorar ainda mais e continuar fazendo história no Tênis de Mesa Brasileiro e Mundial.

O Hugo já foi 3° do ranking e caiu um pouco mas já está recuperando. Está em 5° no momento. Acho que 3° é o máximo que ele pode conseguir no momento enquanto os dois principais chineses estiverem ativos. Tem outros chineses que ainda acho estão um pouco melhores que o Calderano. O cruzamento das chaves dos torneios beneficiou bastante o Calderano. O outro chinês que acho que também está acima mas não o vejo jogar a algum tempo é o Xu Xin. Mas concordo que contra chineses o Calderano fica mais tenso, e perde pra ele mesmo.

To beat ML, you need Aruna’s forehand (power), Harimoto’s backhand (speed) and Moregard’s tricks (creativity). That is a hard combination to have!!

ML's greatest ability is to set the ball so you can't execute/control your style of play. That's why, at 34, he's still at the top unmatched. Consistency and able to exploit opponent's weaknesses are his greatest assets. Many top players have wonderful/lethal drives, placements etc but NOT enough consistency.

​@@liangzhuge2008 Exactly, it is not "nervousness". We are seeing the results of ML being able to successfully vary the ball's spin/placement/tempo/timing/etc. and force Hugo to adapt. If Hugo cannot adapt, this is what it looks like - tons of "unforced" errors and not being able to play his power game like he can against other opponents. Even when Hugo can play with power, ML can stabilize enough in the points to where he can get his own tools in play. Hugo never really had a chance this match, his opponent is too complete.
