I believe some people don't have thermometer at home, so there's another way to check if the oil is hot enough to fry is to use a wooden stick or a chopstick to dip into the oil and if there's bubble forming around the stick, it means that it's the time to fry. BTW, Maangchi, nice hairstyle!

CHANG EDDY , I agree with you , most people don't have thermometer at home , I use the chopstick to chcekthe oil any time I cook . Her recipe is great tasty

Very useful tip. Also you can drop a rice grain or if you're frying anything using any batter then put a drop of the batter in the oil if it starts bubbling then ensure that your oil is ready to cook. Usually the Indian home cooks use this method. 😊

my problem rather is getting the oil too hot on my gas stove than not getting it hot enough.

@@gefrast1 if that's the case, you should monitor the smoke point closely. There's a way to monitor the smoke point of different cooking oils without the use of thermometer, is that you observe the smoke forming around the pot while frying, if there's smoke forming around, you should turn down the flame and stop frying for a couple of minutes to cool down the oil a little before continue frying

By the way, KZbin ended the community captions feature a few months ago, so my volunteer viewers can't submit their captions in their languages anymore. I just made these!! They were so delicious!! My dad said, “Perfect!” I used honey instead of rice syrup & hot pepper instead of red chili paste (as I didn’t have them at home), but they turned out pretty well! Next time I would probably deep fry them for about 6-7 minutes each time on high heat instead of 12 minutes each because it turned out very toasted. I like it medium crunchy😋 thanks so much for your recipe!

I made this and it was SO. GOOD. It was super crunchy, and the chicken was juicy. (Don’t be worried like me if it smells like eggs, it doesn’t taste like them!) Definitely making this again! Thank you so much Mangchi for another of your delicious recipes!!!!

I lived in Korea for a few years, my favorite place to eat was this little place in my building that was kind of a Japanese/Korean fusion place. Anyway, I used to train in Hapkido every night and on my way back home there was my second favorite place to eat, and this is the dish I would get. Funny story, it turned out that both of my favorite restaurants where owned by the same family. The son and daughter ran the restaurant with Grandma in my building and their Mom ran the chicken place. They would often be there on my way back home and would invite me to sit and drink with them while I waited for my Yangnyeom chicken. Good times for sure, I even went back a few years later and of course they still remembered me.

⁠@@oliveraoliveraaa2113I saw one of the other comments had alternatives for the rice syrup. If I read correctly it said to use honey. It’s the same kind of texture so that should work.

I made this today and it was so delicious! And really easy to make. I don't have access to rice syrup, so I used golden syrup with tomato purée instead of ketchup in the sauce, and it turned out really well. The sweet and spicy flavour combined with the crunchiness is to die for!

@@syri8766 I'm not Maangchi, but you replied to my comment so I'm answering. I think so, the sauce is supposed to just about cover the fried chicken pieces, so if you use twice as much chicken you have to use twice as much sauce. I halve it when I only use half as much chicken.

Made this yesterday! Me and my boyfriend loved it so much we’re making it again today 😂 I made a couple of substitutions. I used something called Farina which is a starch made from a variety of vegetables such as potato and cassava (from the world foods section in Tesco) instead of potato starch which I couldn’t find. And maple syrup instead of rice syrup which I also couldn’t find easily.

@@mushfiqanaazkhan to the marination I added ginger garlic and green chilli paste .. insted of potato starch I used corn starch and in the sauce I used chilli sauce insted of Korean chilli paste and sugar insted of rice syrup and lastly added a little cornflour slurry

I just made this for lunch today and it was SO delicious!!! My dad couldn't eat the spicy sauce, so I saved some pieces of chicken for him to eat without the sauce, and even so it was really good, super crunchy. I made this today and it was soooo delicious! 🤤🤤The easiest and the yummiest sauce I ever tried for Korean fried chicken! We don't have gochujang where I live so I used hot chili sauce instead and sprinkled red chili flakes. Gonna cook it again tomorrow, it's so good!

That pickled radish was My first maangchi project....i love it so much...once in the restaurant i gave a lot of complements for that radish, when i was leaving they give me a little container for free yo take home with me. Now i do it myself in very large batches

I made this today after I finally managed to source some rice syrup. It was magnificent! I gave some to my neighbours to try and two comments they gave me were "I had no idea you could cook like that" and "That was perfect in every way". Looks like yangnyeom-tongdak is going to be on my dinner party menu for a LONG time :)

korean fried chicken has always been my favourite food, even though i'm from southeast asia and am not korean! my sister would make them for special occasions and i miss it so much. sometimes i think "wow, imagine if maangchi was my mom" and i cry inside haha i love watching your videos so much even though i can't cook most of them. but one day i will follow your recipes for sure!!!

I love this dish so much and I make it quite often, usually as small, boneless chicken bites. I use honey in my sauce instead of rice syrup, and it is delightful! Thank you for your wonderful recipes, Maangchi!

Just made this tonight with pickled radish on the side. I had to substitute the rice syrup with honey because thats all I had, but very happy with the result!

Korean Chicken is the bomb! I remember when we lived in Korea my mom would send me and my sister at least 3 nights a week to get fried chicken down the road from our home. We got in trouble for eating half of it on our way home. 😂 😂 😂 But, it was so worth it!!!

I love all her recipes that I’ve tried so far. This is the first time I’ve changed something in the recipe because I didn’t have all purpose flour so I used rice flour instead, I figured it couldn’t hurt and it came out delicious!!! She was right about the sauce it was just the perfect amount to coat all the chicken and I use 2.7lbs of chicken instead of 2lbs. My husband wants to eat it already but he has to wait till his off from work to try it. I know he will love it just like all her other recipes I’ve cooked. I want to make it again for my family to try but I would need to do like three times the amount so a long of time and work but it will be worth it for them to try this delicious recipe! Thank you so much Maangchi for sharing. I love your personality, your videos and your recipes!!!

There's a Korean restaurant next to my apartment in Paris that makes Yangnyeom tongdak but I'm sure your recipe is better. I'll try it ❤️. (It'll be hard to make it in my tiny student kitchen but as we say in French "qui ne tente rien n'a rien" (who tries nothing gets nothing))

I used store bought fried chicken, no oil only a bit of water for sauce, replaced rice syrup with honey because I don't have it, and it was delicious 😋 maybe I put too much honey it was on the sweet side but it was still good. Thank you for the recipe ❤️

Made this today and the chicken was delicious! I thought the sauce was way too sweet for my tastes, next time gonna less syrup and skip the sesame seeds as they don't do anything for me. Any tips to make it a bit more savoury for maybe add salt more garlic, less syrup? Thanks Maangchi!

Try adding a little more vinegar(white/apple cider) to make it less sweet/more savoury.

Yess add more red pepper paste and add Black pepper too and add some more chilli fakes and add half tsp of syrup only try adding Mustard sauce 1tbs.It taste so much good savory and spicy.

Hi, if you let your oil get to 350-365 you will not have soggy chicken. When the oil is not up to temperature it causes the meat to absorb oil. Also remember if the meat is cold it will reduce the temperature of the oil, which makes the food soggy or greasy, clear indicator that the oil is not hot enough. Love your channel and trust me you can get the best crunchy fried chicken in one fry and never soggy or greasy

Maangchi, thank you for this recipe. Once again, our Cooking & Supper club enjoyed your recipe very much. We also made some chicken dumplings, some steamed and some pan fried to make pot stickers. We made about 120 dumplings, and there were none left over! For our meeting before this one, we made some of your Spicy Kkanpunggi crispy fried chicken, and some Shanghai-style noodles and my own special recipe for hot and sour soup. We made vegetable dishes and some of your special stir-fried noodles and vegetables. When we began having meetings years ago, we had all just finished an evening course in Chinese cooking at the local college. We were taught many good recipes that everyone enjoyed. But since we found your KZbin channel, our guests are asking us for more of your wonderful Korean food - everyone thinks the Korean style is wonderful. Your recipes are so tasty that we never have left-overs. There are six of us who cook, and we spend all of the afternoon getting everything ready and preparing all the dishes. Then we have 7 or 8 family members and friends who come over to help us eat it. All of us who cook have a lot of fun - it is a great social event, and a nice change from our ordinary jobs. All of the cooks love your recipes - we make them at home as well, between the supper parties. Some of the children are now old enough to help in the kitchen, and pretty soon they will take a turn at doing all the cooking. All we will have to do is relax, eat and drink. Actually, all of us who do the cooking think that is the fun part! Thank you for all of your work in teaching us how to make all of the delicious Korean style food!

@@samiruch Hello, I usually make this recipe using chicken tenders so it doesn't need much cooking time. I cook it until it has golden exterior on the outside with medium heat, about 5-6 minutes assuming you fry with a lot of oil. For the second fry, I increase the heat to high heat and fry only for 2-3 minutes maximum. Don't cook them for too long or else they'll dry out!

Hello Maangchi, thank you so much for the delicious recipe! Amazing how crispy the chicken wings turned out! I did however use a yellow pickled radish I found in the supermarket as a side-dish. I hope that's ok as well. Can't wait to try out more recipes
