I truly want to thank you. I ordered the xh2, and while waiting I was checking out reviews etc. and most lacked a lot of technical details. Even more, most basically just spoke to differences between xh2 and xh2s, requiring a viewing of the xh2s video they previously did. This is the only review I have seen that is detailed to this actual camera. So thank you!

Thank You for the review. I am going on a trip of a life time in November this year. 2 weeks in America then a 35 day cruise from San Diego to Sydney Australia which will include a number of Polynesian Islands and Hawaii. I will be extending my time in Australia for three weeks before returning to the UK. I will be taking: Leica Q2 Fujifilm X-H2 (I currently have the X-T3 but wanted better autofocus and Video performance.) XF 16-55 f/2.8 XF 70-300 I have the XF 10-24 f/4 but I understand it doesn't work well with the X-H2 Thanks again I just need time with the X-H2 to determine the best settings for video.

Thanks Maarten, another outstanding review (as expected). I anxiously await your X-T5 review - hopefully Fuji Canada will have one on its way to you soon. From my reading of the specs the X-T5 has pretty much nailed what *I'd* want in a camera (whilst the recently released X-Hx, X-E4 and X-Pro 3 all missed the mark imho).

Excellent review as always. Long time no see. I am not as pessimistic on the PASM dial nor the focus selector button. I really enjoy having customized modes at my fingertips, selectable I’m milliseconds. The focus selector is a simple press and d-pad maneuver as is the ISO selection which many people inexplicably bemoaned. Not having to take my eye off the screen or EVF to select the myriad of settings is a step up for me. I do enjoy also having a pure photography camera which is why I opted for the X-T5 to operate alongside my H2S. It’s a good pairing for my mostly amateur work, but if I were shooting professionally, the H2 and H2S are a logical paring as they share a battery grip, fan attachment, cages, and dial settings for if or when needed. Thanks Maarten!

Another great review chock full of techy stuff! I'm torn about the upgrade route from my H1. I agree with Robert, for me the ideal would be pairing the X-T5 with the H2. Right now I'm leaning toward the H2. I need to buy it before retiring, then spend a few years of my retirement exploring all the capabilities.

Thank you. I too have an H2 and mostly love it. In line with the times I'll focus on my 3 negatives. The "meter" focus feature is grayed out (sure it's something else I've set but can't figure out what). The new button which launches the m/cf/sf dropdown I feel should allow me to tap and cycle rather than requiring both hands to make a change. Lastly, I should be able to override the dial assignments.; current function makes usage a memory test. Thank you, I very much enjoy and appreciate your videos.

Very good review. From the ergonomics perspective, I am in favour of a separate video button to allow the photographer to quickly chose between taking a still or a video. With regard to the missing CSM switch on front of the camera, I can understand Fujifilm's paradigm on this but feel that it could better handled. I would keep the button on the front, but every time is was pressed it would cycle through the three options. The photographer could quickly change the focusing mode with a maximum of two presses and see the mode in the EVF. Only the movement of one finger is required and the menu could be removed. I think that it would be the best of both worlds.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Understood. However, I prefer switching the mode, so that I'm using all of the video features before I start recording, and once I'm in video mode, the shutter key is much easier to start and stop recording. Yes, agreed, cycling would be the better option.

Maarten, great review! You moved to Collingwood? I actually enjoyed the X-H2S so much I sold all my other older fujis and bought the X-H2. It's a great combo with the newer lenses and I don't have to make any compromises. X-T5 looks amazing but I'll stick with the X-H2 as I can use 8K for video cropping and keeping the same body as the X-H2S. For photography, this is great though I think we could all would have preferred an easier way to map the ISO selection if you are going to take away the ISO dial (firmware)? The CF Express cards are game changers for video and wildlife shooting. Love the new bodies!

Excellent video as always, Maarten. Thank you. I’m looking forward to the performance video but I think my mind is made up unless any glaring shortcomings show up in that video. I’m keeping my X-T2 and X-E3 forever for their character and charm, but I plan to trade in my X-T4 and X-S10 for the X-H2 as soon as this week. I hope to see some different lenses tested in your next video if possible to see if Fuji’s claims are noticeable. I have basically every X-Mount lens under $700 (and the 18-135) but surprisingly only 2 of them are on Fuji’s list of lenses that can supposedly take full advantage of the new 40mpx sensor. I’ll need to decide which lenses to part with so I can pick up some current-generation X-mount glass to go with the X-H2. (The 18-135 is definitely going to a new home. Never fell in love with that one haha.)

Thanks Maarten for another great review! Let me ask you a question like this, if you had to select your camera for the next 5 years (no changes allowed) what would it be: Fuji X-H2 or Sony a7 IV? and why?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
While this depends on what you are doing/planning to do, my likely preference today would be the X-H2. That's mostly because I mostly record video on my personal camera and its video settings are better future-proofed, partly thanks to its current feature set and as Fujifilm is more likely to include new features in firmware upgrades. If you primarily shoot stills, if you already have a selection of e-mount lenses and you prefer full frame, then I'd have no hesitation in selecting Sony.

@Maarten Heilbron I want to get more familiar with pro equipment, so I might treat myself with new Fuji for Xmas and see how it goes from there. I had a7iv to try the other day, it kept overheating even while I was doing setup following your video guide. And I live just 30 mins away from you, not in Africa! Then someone got Fuji x-h2, and I have to say interface and the way it operates has something to it. Only benefit of Sony was that massive sensor and I felt like AF is bit faster and sharper but that also depends on the lenses it had on, apart from it, I felt like Fuji beats it in all regards when it comes to video - and no overheating! Plus, I wanted to get a pro camera for quite some time now. So it's a win-win scenario for me (as long as wife doesn't know how much it costs!😉)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
First, if you are using a device (camera or whatever) to generate revenue, I should think you'd be able to use that revenue to invest in tools that improve your work and increase your earnings without having to hide things from your family (not a recipe for success). Don't spend more than you need, or than you can pay off with your earnings. So right, for KZbin you don't need a massive sensor or a particularly high bit rate or an expensive lens. As I said, iPhone is a great way to get started, build your brand and your audience while you figure out the finances. Fujifilm cameras, particularly the smaller ones, do suffer from overheating. As for the A7 IV, once you set the overheating to high you should have issues - I don't.

Thanks for the great review. I’m curious to hear about to your experience in the next video. My x-h2 had to go back to Fuji. First the software crashed after extensive 15 fps bursts at an event. Then the AF started to be more and more off even though the camera reported that the subject was in focus. After 2’200+ shots the AF wouldn’t engage at all with the shutter half-press. No reset or firmware update to 1.10 resolved it. From what I read from others there are a couple of buggy units around with issues beyond firmware. Otherwise I loved the camera and the results.

Marteen, I like the way how you explain functions and settings. I've started to sell my Sony equipment and have now switched to Fuji. I wanted to use both systems in parallel for about 3 months and afterwards I wanted to decide which one can stay. But after only 1 week my Fuji X-H2 won! Only a few things I don't like: The Q Menu button and the DISP/BACK button could be more tactile (I hope this is the correct word). When I switch with the mode dial through C1, ..., C7 I'd like to see the function name that I have entered. Card slot 1 should be a dual card slot allowing SD cards beside CFexpress. I can't choose the image ratio (3:2, 16:9 etc.) when I'm shooting raw only. On my Sony I could do this. I'm looking forward for more Fuji videos from you.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Yes, those keys should have a braille-like pattern. Yes, excellent suggestion, good firmware upgrade possibility. I'll pass it along. Yes, others do. If you want RAW - meaning the full unadulterated output from the sensor, there would not be an aspect ratio - that's up to you to do in editing. Thanks, more coming.

Thanks a lot Maarten for this great review as always. I currently own a x-t3 and a x-h1. Only doubt I have with regard to these new models is the 40mpx sensor as I very often shoot in low light conditions. How do they perform when you shoot at above 3200/6400 ? Of couse it'll depend also on which lens is normally used. Most of the time I have no choice then using f1.4 and f1.2 lenses . I have heard some professionals wedding photographers not completely happy with the new sensor resolution in low light, some even regretting to have upgraded. Best regards from Italy
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, that could be an issue, however, the low light (see my performance video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoXXn6Obja6UlZI) capability seems to be equivalent or slightly improved, likely thanks to the back side illuminated sensor.

What deterred me from investing in the XH2 is that the old batch of APS-C lenses were made for use on cameras with a resolution of upto 26MP; thus those lenses don't have the resolving power for use on the XH2 which has a 40MP sensor; so I bought the Nikon Z8 instead as it has modern lenses that can resolve images taken with a 50MP sensor
@MaartenHeilbron

Fantastic! Great, detailed review. I think a lot of people naturally get disappointed when they have waited so long for something, not unlike a kid at Christmas! I’m curious as to how many people are disjointed with these new cameras from Fuji? 22-23 minutes on a 128 Gb card? Wow, thought my 5D4 was bad at 28-29 minutes per 128 Gb! I am considering this, or an XT-4, or maybe even the Canon R7, or R10? Think I will wait and see how the pricing and availability work out. Thanks for your expertise and efforts! Take care

@georgedavall9449
@georgedavall9449 Жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Hi! Point taken Maarten, however, you mentioned recording times twice in your Video, I believe? I’m sure serious and semi serious videographers are using external recording. I am NOT/ do not consider myself in that league. I am a ‘Stills’ Photographer. I have some School Concerts coming up, and my Daughter is a participant, so I am thinking of using the 5D4 in 4K. I usually use my trusty ole’ 70D, which does a fine job, at least for me. I know, it is ‘ancient,’ but I can count on it every time. These will be special Concerts, and I thought they would warrant higher quality. I was pondering the other day, how Panasonic does great Video, but the Focus comes into question at times. Sony is Sony, they seem to master most of it. Fuji does great with stills, but have lagged in the Video department. Canon can, and should, ‘Do it all,’ but seem to cripple some of the Vidoe features in some cameras, which is a shame, as the DPAF works a treat. Nikon is a work in progress. I had my 70-200 L glass on my 5d4 ata recent football game, and tried to capture some of it in 4K, but from where I has seats, the crop factor brought me in too close, so I had to record in 1080, and it turned out nicely. Always enjoy your thorough and well presented videos. Thank You.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. If you record 4KHQ on the X-H2 using H.265 at 200Mbps, that will give you lots of quality (Sony's A7IV does only 140Mbps at 4K H.265). With that setting you should get over 80 minutes on a 128GB card. BTW - focus on the X-H2 is very good, much improved over previous Fujifilm releases.

It's a great camera but one cannot change the ISO manually when in interval mode so it's a no go for ppl who shoot time lapses and want to adjust things manually.

I didn't realize that was a shortcoming - thanks for this insight into advanced interval shooting.

Thx for the video. On the X-T4 i can go to ISO 80 with dial on L.

The lowest "L" ISO on the X-H2 is L64. But you will lose dynamic range and some colour accuracy.

great review - thanks Maarten :-) I think I was one of those wishing for an X-H2. But now it's here, I'm a bit "meh" and have ordered an X-T5 instead!
@MaartenHeilbron

That might be a good decision, but I kind of prefer the X-H size over the X-T. However, I will wait until my review unit arrives.

I was considering the xt5 until I saw that it's evf is 3.69m dots. The xh2 having a 5.76m dot evf made me prefer it. (My R5 is 5.76m). I love both the xt5 and xh2 design.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
While 3.69 is very respectable and usable, no question that 5.76 is better for the discerning photographer.
@duringthemeanwhilst

@@MaartenHeilbron i had 5.76 on my GFX100. I have to ay I don't notice a huge difference, but then as a landscapist I don't rely on the EVF for anything too critical, and can use the LCD for most things.

A thorough and exhaustive review of the features of this camera, as per usual! I see you have Collingwood instead of Toronto as for the location where this film was made - have you relocated or this is your summer residence? Any plans to do another collaboration with Chato in the near future? (Don't get him started on woke culture!)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
I do plan to get together with Chato again, just haven't been able to agree on a topic. No, we have access to a place in Collingwood where it's nice and quiet (but echoey) to relax and do a little writing/recording.

Thank you for your review. In the upcoming performance review, would you please comment on the noise characteristics of this 40mp sensor and whether effective ISO is lower compared to other APS-C models like the XT-4?

@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks. I'm trying to find what the "pixel pitch" is on this sensor, (FOUND: 3.04μm) and how Fuji plans to keep the noise down. On their website they state: "The high-resolution 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor has an enhanced image-processing algorithm that boosts resolution without compromising the signal-to-noise ratio, delivering astonishing image quality. And this sensor has an improved pixel structure, allowing light to be received more efficiently. ISO 125 - previously an extended sensitivity - is now available as standard sensitivity." Still trying to wrap my head around this. In-body noise reduction for RAW files??
@MaartenHeilbron

I'm pretty sure that there is no processing applied to RAW files.
