I’ve used both but I’ve settled on staying with iMac this last 8 years. I find them more stable overall although I get the cost ! I recently upgraded from a mid 2011 that would only run a max of 32gb of RAM to a refurbished 2020 and bought my own 128gb of RAM. Great machine and much quicker load times. Cubase is stable, never had an issue. Regardless, I love your videos, they’re a great source of information and guidance. Greetings from Scotland.

Thanks for this video! I'm having more and more issues with Mac and resorted to top-speccing a Mac Mini, because I'm not bothered seeing an iMac Pro or something pricier kick the bucket out of nowhere, in the middle of a project. It's becoming more and more tempting to switch back to PC, once I move.

The new Mac are expensive and trying to buy that and new software makes you think? Appreciate your answer and thank you.

How dare you offer such reasoned, gently made arguments. This is the internet you know - you can't just discuss Mac vs PC without flaming the other side! :) Seriously though, I think this is also my future. I love Macs, and have thoroughly bought into the whole ecosphere, but the expense and inability to fix is definitely getting an issue. For me, the idea of moving away from Logic (as well as other Mac-specific software) is probably the biggest concern, and learning another DAW like Cubase. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist, so don't want to spend too much time learning software, rather than writing music. But, as I said, I think it's just a matter of time now... Thanks for the really balanced overview - you made it seem less scary to switch!

Haha, well I try! I keep hearing people say they are scared to switch to PC so I wanted to make sure everyone knows it's no longer at the Windows Vista level. I do like both platforms and I think they both have very specific strengths and weaknesses. From a business perspective PC makes more sense to me right now but who knows what the future brings. There might come a time when I fully switch back to Mac if it's feasible for my studio.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I haven't been able to afford a Mac since, like, 1992. And come to think of it, that was a gift. I have Apple phones and iPads. They're great, but when it comes to desktops there is always more PC for the money by a long shot. I'm going to be putting a new system together in the next few months and it will be like my last two computers in that it will last for the next 10 years. The new Apple direction with the processor gets a lot of talk and speculation from Mac users, but whatever happens in that area there's no certainty whatsoever that there can be an easy transition anytime soon for music makers who already have multiple sample libraries from a variety of businesses. I think it's accurate to say that most developers prefer Windows to Macs these days as well. Great video as always, A-K D! It's always appreciated that you never sit on the fence. You always have a preference and state your reasoning succinctly.

Girl you nailed it totally with this story. I am a composer/producer for 40 years now and worked with analog in the 80ties. Explored the Atari in the 90ties and Steinberg Pro16.... To cut my story short. In my Pro Studio there wil be NEVER Never ever be a Mac. I always built my own PC's and still do. I always hated the closed system of Apple. Granted... in the beginning Apple had it's pro's but the last ten years or so PC's are the better choice not only because of pricing. And PC's crash no more or less than Apples do (I also work in studio's that use Apples). Comparing my actual PC to modern Apples...... That Apple is a nice Family car with a very powerful engine... I built my VEP PC by buying a used enterprise grade server off ebay (HP Proliant G8). You can get dual Xeon boxes with ridiculous amounts of RAM for cheap, they come with hardware raid if you need redundancy, and they usually have lots of easily accessible drive bays. Because it's enterprise hardware the failure rates are really low, and because you get raid for free you can just plug in cheap consumer grade hard drives. A VEP PC really only needs data throughput so the dual Xeon processors are more than enough, assuming you do all the mixing in your DAW. Including upgrades to 256GB RAM and 4TB SSD storage for samples it totaled to around 1k Euros, so maybe 1.2k USD. The only downside is that enterprise server fans are really loud, so you better have a networked-up closet far away from your workstation.

I'm about to upgrade my PC. I checked the price of the component I need with the equivalent for Mac and it is just crazy 🤪 The price difference is huge! Also the space storage per gigabyte is very big! At least PC you can replace any component yourself very easily. Even if you have the skills, you can make your on OS with PC. You don't have to use windows. I can see some of the easiest ergonomy on Mac OS but it doesn't justify the crazy pricing! Just a question? What CPU do you use? Actually, what is the spec of your main PC? A lot of people seems to love Intel but I can see that the most performant CPU seems to be Ryzen. Thank you for all your video. You’re right about switching from Apple for cost. They don’t care about the end users at all. Years ago Apple had some proprietary control over their machines and decided that everyone who wrote software for their machines had to pay them a fee for doing that even if they were to give the software away. Developers jumped to PC and never went back and so, when they did that, the gap for available software for PCs is 10 times greater. Apple is reluctant to make their Software backwards compatible just to sell more items. You’re a smart woman with good foresight. Not many people see the hardship of owning a Apple machine. You graduated at a good time as well. I met someone on Campus and I was told that the Music departments are now making students buy at least two Macs during their education for their degree. Terrible. Chrome is better and can hide your location from others with the built in VPN.

I have never enjoyed using a Mac. I find it to be incredibly constrictive. What's the point of having a better user experience if you can't even do the things you want to do? But then again, I use linux and have fine tuned my OS to do adapt to my workflow and do things that I want it to do rather than having to adjust my workflow to an environment some company imposed on me after giving them my hard earned money.

Thanks for this great enlightening video! I now saw a couple of videos from professional composers who went back to Windows because of the reasons you mention, which gives me the courage to do the same. I have decided to go back to Windows as well after 16 years on a Mac. I bought my current Mac (21" 2017) 2 years ago without knowing that it's not possible to add ram myself as in previous computers. I went to 2 Apple repair shops asking if they could add ram but they refused because of the risk damaging the Mac! I cannot do much with an 8 GB Mac (my previous 27" Mac has 32 GB which was OK), so what choices do I have besides buying again a better Mac which cannot be upgraded in ram at all from what I understood because the ram is baked into the M1 chips? So back to windows!

I like the production value of the intro...is that your own score? I think you put your finger on the main issue: price. In the end, a music producer should add up the total cost of sticking with one OS vs another. For example, my 2012 27" iMac internal HD died and I spent roughly $500 to get it replaced, the next year my software was over taxing my CPU and I had to make this decision. I was prepared to switch from Logic/MacOS to Windows but in the end I was able to get a refurbished 2019 27" iMac at a better price than the comparable PC+monitor. Now, my old iMac is basically a dual monitor...with the option to act as a VSP streaming server if I need it. Also, I am not a fan relearning the Cubase 11 workflow immediately. However, I see the writing on the wall in the next 7 years...and I may be forced to switch to Windows/Cubase next time simply because of price.

Once more a very informative video, so I can just agree you. One of the biggest benefits of using a PC instead of a MAC is the modularity, so you can switch parts, configure or even repair them by yourself. I sometimes repaired some MACs but I really hate it 😂. Althogh Logic Pro X is a massive DAW it can't pull me over to the dark side. I'll stay on Windows! And it's true aswell that Windows isn't that crashy anymore. I got actually just 2 Bluescreens in the last 3 Years, one because I'm an Idiot and the other because my DAW Freezed while editing MIDI 😆. And not to forget about the huge cheaper price as you said. A PC with Ryzen 9 5950X or a Threadripper still rips Apple's Xeon.

My sentiments exactly. I recently purchased a used 2012 Mac Pro 10.14.6 hoping to extend my Mac-based operations. However, This is mainly because I refuse to consider spending $12K-$25k for a new Mac excluding the $6k monitor. Outrageous and unimaginable is what I think about Apple now. I switched from PC years ago when the purchase of a Mac meant years and years of stable and reliable service. But when my 2012 becomes obsolete due to IOS tampering and discontinuance of support, a couple of years from now at the most, back to PC I will go and never look back!

When it comes to computing technologies, I fully believe that you use what works for your workflow and cost of ownership. For example on desktop I use PC because I run Linux mostly, on phones I use iPhones and iPads because their super long term support, it keeps them valid for much longer than Android devices (which I've used for many years as well), which I'm also system admin to as half the family is on that side. In terms of safety, I don't really think the iPhone & iPad line are necessarily safer than Android devices. It's just that it is much easier to get yourself in trouble on an Android device due to their more openness (even though the Google system is not as open as people assume it to be)

Yeah Windows 10 is quite nice actually, took me some months to fully appreciate it after coming back from Mac. "Just works" as they like to say :P Oh no, that's what they say about my old Mac whose 85€ power supply melted in front of my eyes. With cables that break if you look at them. Where the disk drive died after 3 years which turned out to be about average. Where the internal harddrive cable (!) broke because of a known construction issue. Twice. With the loose connection to the monitor which caused it to flicker all the time, also known construction issue. Also it occasionally gave me small electric shocks while charging. Not that it's much better in PC land, but no Macs don't "just work" as far as I'm concerned. The only thing I'm missing since going to PC is time machine, would you like to share some inside how you deal with backups?

I have an iPad Air and really like it and my wife uses an iPhone and she loves it. I LOATHE Microsoft and most of their software and I STILL use a PC running Windows 10. Why? Though I think Apple's hardware is really polished... I will not submit to their pricing for a desktop or laptop computer. They aren't just expensive... but INSANELY expensive! A top of the line Mac Pro maxed out with only the available hardware upgrades from the Apple store costs $54,000!!! If someone wanted to build a top of the line PC which will blow the snot out of the top of the line Mac Pro... you can do it for about $10,000-12,000 and it will be more than twice as powerful as the $54,000 Mac Pro!!! As most avid PC builders know, AMD is absolutely dominating the processor market for cost to performance. The top of the line AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors make Intel Xeons look like toys for kids and at a much more affordable cost. So I continue using a PC because it's a much better value with much higher performance.

Yeah, the current situation with Apple is sad to say the least. I remember the days when WE were the Professional users in Apple's eyes... the creative people, not just a Pixar sized company. There's no way I would shell out the price they ask for a current Pro machine. I'm still on my 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 and I love it. No way to upgrade I get it and I'm stuck with macOS Mojave because they dropped 32-bit compatibility onwards and a lot of plug-ins that I use (that are not developed anymore) can't go 64-bit. Apple has made the Pro tier machines (I mean Desktop) unreachable for us. My issue with the PC is Windows. The hardware is now indistinguishable from Apple's offering. You can build a PC that's definitely comparable to even top-of-line Macs but then, you're stuck struggling with Windows which slowly and certainly trashes itself with time (sadly). I have not had to reinstall my Mac since like the first installation (OS upgrades are pretty smooth). I have moved from HD to HD, then from HD to SSD the NVMe SSD on PCIe without reinstalling. I can work and enjoy the stability and reliability. Maybe you're right and the PC is getting better and better, but still... the devaluation of your machine will be much much faster and you'll be reinstalling the whole shabang from time-to-time because you'll discover that preformance degrades pretty heavily. Windows is still to this day not very efficient at keeping itself in top shape. Despite all this to be honest, if Logic was to run on Windows, I would strongly consider switching... strongly, just to have an upgrade path hardware-wise. As for gaming, yep, no gaming on the Mac (I don't count trashy indie games as gaming... no AAA titles on Mac sadly)... I have a separate SSD for that on the Mac Pro and run Windows natively so I can play games and it runs supernice. M1 macs have destroyed that option too... no running Windows on an M1 Mac... so it's almost like they're doing everything possible to lose me as a customer :) I'd love to hear your experience 1 year later...

I have been a PC user since I was 14, but have used "ancient" Macs, too. I totally agree with you, Anne-Kathrin, on the ridiculously dear price and the lack of backwards compatibility, when updates are released. That really makes me very dubious about making a Mac my main machine. I hope Windows 11 will not follow the tradition of "Windows is good every other version" 😛 By the way, I believe you watched Trevor Morris' video, when he compares the performance of his Cubase template on PC vs a new Mac he bought at that time, and the latter basically performs much better?

Apple became king in the media world because of Avid and Final Cut back in the day. But those reasons have been irrelevant for a long time and I'm so happy people are finally catching on. How exactly is the company who never gives developers any time to prepare for catastrophic compatibility issues supposed to be the better option? I have heard Macbooks are more reliable for live/on the go stuff, but the pricing just does not make sense.

Well said. These have been mostly my thoughts since .., well forever really, Although referring to XP as the dark days cracked me up. Some day Ann you'll be middle aged and listen to the younger professionals and laugh and understand what I mean. :-) Which one is better, setting aside cost is always a moving target. The target used to swing much fasted in the early days (early 90s) but it still flips back and forth. It is funny for an older observer to see what used to be more an issue with A, now is a problem with B. The only steady thing seems to be Windows delivers better bang for the buck and that Apple values form over function and they never really want you to be able repair their hardware on your own. If we ever meet in person I'll tell my story about replacing a floppy disc on a Mac Quadra.

There were a few things that really killed mac for me. The inability for me to fix my own device, the ridiculous pricing, and the lack of control over what software and formats I use. I bought a PC for $1300 and the same specs for a mac would have cost me almost $4000. I would have to spend nearly 1k on *just a ram upgrade* and with that, there's little to no difference in performance for the price. Not to mention the fact that I couldn't get a touch screen. Which I've found myself using both for school and even for composing! There have been many macs that have design flaws on the component level, which has made me feel like I can't trust Apple to provide a good product. I'm too worried that my computer will fail, burn itself out due to bad cooling, or whatever. And when it breaks, I can't get it fixed, nor can I fix it myself. It ends up "cheaper to just buy a new one" but with my PC, I know that I can upgrade specs whenever I feel like it, and I can fix it if something breaks. My father once dropped his PC laptop, found a donor PC for parts, and replaced it all himself with no data loss or features disabled. I know for a fact that wouldn't work for any Apple product. Finally, the lack of control over software and formats. I have a friend who currently uses primarily apple products. Trying to share files has resulted in her being unable to open various projects because apple blocks those formats from even showing up. Additionally the closed ecosystem of file sharing and software just turns me away. Several times my friends have sent videos and photos through apple, but because I'm not an apple user, I wasn't able to open them. At least without going around my elbow to get around the lockdown. Well, I didn't expect this to be a semi-rant... but I guess it is! Bottom line, I don't and will likely never use apple by choice.

A Windows PC can be fine as long as you dedicate it to audio stuff only. Next thing is to find a proper audio interface that works well (read: hassle free) with Windows. I have used RME stuff on Win and Mac, it is as reliable as it is expensive. My next audio computer will be a Windows machine because of pricing, the possible amount of RAM (M1 with 64 G will be made of unobtainium if it comes to market), and due to the fact that I may change or replace hardware like a grown up without sending this thing to "authorized repair centers" and the like. And I do not need logic although I have used it through the years from the Notator SL (ATARI) days on. Apart from that I still run a iMac 27 since nine years now without any issues. In these years I have spent a recent amount of time to get Windows machines to work properly. When the time comes, I wonder how Win11 will behave in a (my own) audio environment.

We have about 17 Macs at work, and they are biggest pile of overpriced and underspecced crap out there. Back in the day, I would have said they we're better at multimedia tasks, but not now. This is entirely my opinion, to each their own. Logic Pro is great, can't argue with that, but there are tons of options for Windows now that makes Macs hardly worth considering, given the artificially inflated costs, poor performance and inability to upgrade. But I'll never give up my iPhone and Apple Watch!

Some A-list composers would disagree with you about spending the money on a mac pro...yes it's ridiculously expensive...but it works. The fact that everyone and their family makes PC parts...there is always that hit or miss. Apple just works, whether third party or Apple direct, and there is a premium for that as well. Is Apple overpriced? If you consider part for part, probably, but what you get with Apple is more than just OS and hardware...compatibility between your devices is important also. I know no one that uses anything but an iPad pro for music creation. You would be hard pressed to find a PC that can out perform the latest Mac Pro for an all in one solution without the need for VEP. From my experience OS compatibility is far worse on a PC...loads of Windows issues from what I hear especially with DAWs...I appreciate your take on the PC, but I honestly think it has to do with your work flow and what you're comfortable with and of course your budget...let's face it, the number one reason people buy PC over Mac is the price. And I know of no software and hardware issues where compatibility is an issue with a Mac...since the majority of all studios in the world use them. I have yet to find a studio that has a PC over a Mac and unless the new Silicon chips destroy all compatibility, I don't see that changing any time soon.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer

From what I've experienced, the composer studios in LA are pretty much 50/50 on Mac and PC platforms. Hans Zimmer and a lot of RCP composers are on PC for example but also at Sonic Fuel Studios it was pretty much 50% - so the expense of the Mac platform is not always a main consideration since these people could easily afford all the Mac Pros in the world. They are on PC by choice and so am I. The "Apple just works" argument is really outdated. The same really goes for PCs, and frankly most online threads in the composer community at this point are about Mac compatibility issues, not about PC issues. You're also missing the point about performance - no audio professional needs the fastest computer in the world. Both of my computers are far from it and even with a 1000 track template, heavy plugins and multiple synths loaded, they still don't even reach 50% of their capacity. So what's the point in having a machine that is possibly 5 times as capable if I'm already not even maxing out what I have. That would be money thrown right down the toilet because it's purchased power I wouldn't be tapping into. It would just sit there unused. Others who have the new Mac Pro have tried to max it out and could barely get to 10%. So what's the point in now having spent $15k or more on 90% of power you can't even use. Aside from that, both Mac and PC platforms can easily run large templates in one machine without the need for VEP. Plenty of people are using Mac Pros, Mac Minis, or iMac Pros as a one stop solution. The same goes for those who build massive AMD Ryzen Threadripper machines. So I'm not really sure where you're getting your information but from what I've seen, both platforms are heavily used and both get the job done very well, albeit at very different price points.

Apple definitely lost most of its hardcore creative base with its new Mac Pro pricing. That combined with Apple’s attitude to long-term backward software compatibility. Windows is still not as good as Mac OS, but it is getting closer too, as you say. So I’ve become a (reluctant) PC convert also. (And I wish Quicklook was more stable and built into the OS! And the option to calculate folder sizes was added in the detail view in Explorer.)

As someone who's income is not dependent on music and who has the ability to pay Apple's premium, I tend to buy Apple now. I purchased a refurbished 2019 MacBook Pro (which wasn't inexpensive) that's fantastic. Power goes out, battery keeps it going. Plenty of CPU (i9) and 64 GB of RAM. Portable so it goes anywhere. And as a prior Cubase user, the switch to Logic Pro has gone well. That said - you're right. The fact you must buy over-priced RAM from Apple (and onboard SSD) plus a high base cost -- if I were doing this for a living, I would be using a PC. But, with a nice 12.9 inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, the integration between the devices is where Apple shines. If you can afford to have a complete (and current) Apple eco-system, it's a good solution. Is it worth the price...? For working professionals, probably not. For home hobbyist who have income from elsewhere, perhaps. I do wonder if Apple Silicone machines (M1, M2, etc.) are going to cause a shift? Will be interesting to see if Intel and AMD can keep pace with Apple. Intel has struggled to deliver over the last few years. It's not hard to envision a day in the coming years, where the need for multiple networked systems to have the necessary track count, will be easily supported on a single Apple silicone platform. M1 is not there yet, but the architecture is compelling. Thus, I think the question will become broader than Mac vs. PC. It's going to become Apple vs Intel/AMD LSI architecture and the software solutions each supports. Time will tell....
@HollywoodVirtualAudio
@HollywoodVirtualAudio 3 жыл бұрын
It’s already supported by a single late 2019 Mac Pro. Ram is the main determining factor in track count. That machine holds up to 1.5 terabytes. Of course for the price you could make a down payment on a house. A very nice house. Surprisingly, enterprise grade PC’s equipped with mega Ram aren’t much cheaper than the Mac. But I agree, (M) based MacBook Pros will probably soon do this without the need for excessive Ram.
