If Apple squeezed a Mac Pro into a Mac Mini, you’d get something that looks a lot like the new Studio Mac, I mean Max Studio, I mean, M1 Max Mac Studio. No trash can, no cheese grater, just a single block of extruded aluminum with plenty of room for fans. And ports! They’ve even included ports on the front. This feels like the Macs we used to love, in all the best ways. We’re hoping to find even more user-friendly treasures on the inside, but there’s only one way to find out…Let’s tear it down!
You can take apart your $4,000 Mac Studio(and just about anything else) with our Pro Tech Toolkit!

With a storage module in a different slot or different capacity than the original configuration it seems like it's not possible to get Configurator to restore. I tested much of what you guys did except with the 512gb module from a base unit and a 1tb from a different Studio, but no configuration other than the original size was able to restore. According to genius bar techs that I spoke with, the module has to be paired with System Configurator, a tool only accessible in repair tickets, so they seemed to think that upgrades were not possible. Hopefully this can be changed at some point! Great teardown :)

The pins on the Studio's SSDs look like the pins on the MacPro's SSDs. MacPro's SSDs are longer so we know they won't fit in a Studio, but will a Studio's SSD work in a MacPro?

This whole kerfuffle about the Studio's SSD... Keep in mind that the M1 Macs are really just modified iPhones rather than modified x86 machines. I don't think you'd have much luck swapping out an SSD on an iPhone either. Good thing there's 4-6 Thunderbolt ports on the Studio.

Cool video. I'm a computer professional. Used to keep the lights on for a major ad agency that was 100% Mac. Did broadcast sports for a few years, keeping the edit systems running. Worked as the mac guy at an international hospitality company. It was a frequent tactic to swap hard drives among our fleet of Macs. Susan's Mac got a crack in the screen? Put her drive in Andy's computer while he is on vacation. We will get the repaired computer back before he gets back. But now not only can we not upgrade ram, but hard drives are tied to hardware. I get the ram thing. Most people don't ever upgrade ram. Soldered ram is more robust (no mechanical point of failure) and cheaper for them to manufacture. But the storage thing is asinine. This isn't a banking or medical computer which has to meet data privacy regulations. I'm not aware of a lot of cases of hackers snatching just a storage device out of a Mac to be read on another machine. It's just needless obstruction. No doubt they see a profit motive in this somehow. But I am puzzled. If they are counting on you taking the machine to Apple or an authorized repair center to deal with storage issues that is a problem. What is the first thing they say to you when you do that? "We cannot guarantee the integrity of your data stored on this machine". So they wont let us deal with it ourselves, but they refuse to be responsible with your data when you take it to them? Wagging a finger in the direction of backups isn't helpful. Apple needs to give us back control of storage. I honestly can't recommend Apple workstations anymore exactly for this reason. There is nothing we can do in house to keep the team running on these. Apple Silicon may be fast, but he Wintel machines are repairable and upgradeable.

I've been wondering the same thing. I haven't seen anyone open up the 8TB model. They also claim a higher throughput on the 8TB model, so some kind of RAID-0-like setup would make sense. Although the increase in throughput is closer to 30-40%, not the 80%+ you'd expect from a proper RAID-0 setup. Maybe the 8TB models haven't actually shipped yet (except to the chosen few like iJustine who had them in the first wave)

@@Niosus indeed, it's very likely the 8TB is dual 4TB with hardware striping. But, that doubles the failure rate combined with the fsync issue means you need to back up the unit consistently and use a UPS.

Hi, thanks for the great video! I'm planning to buy a Mac Pro but then I found this Mac Studio and doing the maths customizing the Studio, I can get a better machine comparing it with the basic version of the Mac Pro (128GB vs 64GB + 2TB vs 1TB ssd drive) with the same M2 Ultra with 24-core CPU, 60-core GPU, 32‑core Neural Engine, all of this for $2000 less than the Pro. Why is the huge difference in price? Would you say that the Mac studio can be a work horse that can work 24/7 (well not that much but it is for a Recording studio) for at least 5-6 years? Or in that regard would be better a Mac Pro. I have researched all in terms of specs and everything tells me that I could go with a Mac Studio with better specs for less price, but I do not how good this one would be in the long term. Any ideas?

yes, on the regular ssd you can't just swap nand flash on ssd module because it is programmed with the controller on the ssd itself.. so in mac studio, you also cannot swap nand flash module because that is configurated with ssd controller by apple.. and ssd controller in mac studio is directly wired (soldered) onto m1 chipset.. so that is not a full ssd module, there are just nand flash..

6 /10 is way too high... that thing isn't designed to be repairable or upgradeable

I agree 100%. It’s designed to be not upgradable. This is simply a middle finger to our rights to repair devices. The rating should have taken that into account.
@walkinmn
@walkinmn 2 жыл бұрын
It's designed to be repairable (only by official Apple Authorized Service Provider) but yes, it's not upgradeable. This way they can sneakily say they care about the right to repair without actually caring about their costumers

Yes, indeed, unless you're friends with someone whose an expert on apple's devices inner workings and have both the uber expensive tools to actually do the repair, and knows who to get the parts from. You're out of luck.

The camera on the Studio Display can't be the one from the iPhone 11 tho. They used the same camera from the iPads and those are too thin to be able to fit the iPhone 11's cameras.

I guess the second slot is intended for the 8 TB ssd model, so 4TB in each card. The card is too small to contain 8TB by itself

Finally someone who uses the brain to think about what their eyes see. Those are simple “memory cards” ... and when it’s time to update a configuration purchased “out of necessity”, in a couple of years, I’m sure Apple will sell appropriate spare parts or allow OWC to do so.

NOPE. In those slots there are no SSDs, but only NAND Flash memory chips while the controller and cache are integrated into the SoC.

You have the right to ignorance. You're probably elated by Alder Lake's PCIe 5.0 system bus running at 63 GBps. 😄 Instead that of the M1Ultra travels at 800 GBps ... and that of the M1Max at 400 ... and that of the M1Pro at 200 ... and that of the entry level M1 at 128 !!!

I have to agree that you should be able to upgrade it. I’ve been a long time Mac user but the past few years, I’ve found better options, like a Lenovo tiny computer with upgradeable Ram, SSD, and NVMe for a quarter of the price. Unless your into some very very very demanding software, Apple is just not worth the price. If you’re going to buy Apple, better to buy used and load iOS on an external NVMe. And what’s with these little rinky dink 125 and 250 GB SSDs anyway? Just a way for companies to get you to buy online storage! Id rather save to my Synology NAS.

But *_ram64man_* has not objected. This is to show that it is only the echo of other people’s thoughts and that, specifically the architecture designed by Apple, it has not understood anything in relation to the substantial difference that exists between RAM and *_UMA_* Difference that, incidentally ;), is ENHANCED by the speed of access to memory locations. Sometimes we try to follow a path that “seems” twisted, but that has its own didactic logic ... that escapes those who know little or nothing. (Forgive poor English …)

Good god. Can you imagine all the wooly mammoths that will be released when these things end up at the Genius Bar for their yearly dusting? There's absolutely no way for anyone to clean these things without disassembling them, and that's like... the most basic regular piece of regular computer maintenance there is. Giving the back grill a spray with the canned air ain't gonna cut it. What good is that chonker of a heatsink if it gets coated in dust almost immediately? Apple is like an S&M Dom that gets a chub out of watching their products thermal throttle and beg for mercy.
@stephen1r2
@stephen1r2 2 жыл бұрын
Someone else got the board+heatsink out as one unit once all the ports and frame were removed, so once you got that far the fans could be removed and the whole thing blasted to kill the dust bunnies. So no need to expose the SOC and need to repaste unless you need it.
@Enrico.Sbardolini

Have you never touched on the thought that someone other than you lives in a cleaner world? Someone who dusts every day and puts filters on the air conditioner to have only clean air in the studio and, above all, in the house. Think about it, you could change too!

@pirojfmifhghek566 2 жыл бұрын
@@Enrico.Sbardolini It doesn't take much to put dust in the air. Most of the dust in my computer is literally from pulling kleenex out of a box from five feet away. When spring comes, there's pollen on every surface that's constantly floating through the air. Dust just happens. You're gonna have to dust the inside of your computer at some point. In fact I gotta ask, when was the last time you ever dusted the inside of one of your computers? Do you ever open those things up or do you just assume everything is hunky-dory because you use a swiffer on your desk now and then?
