Is the Mac Studio Worth the upgrade?
The apps I use everyday on the Mac Studio m1 Max are After Effects, Cinema 4D with Redshift, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, and DaVinci Resolve. And over the last 3 months I have really tried pushing the base model Mac Studio in production.

I have the base model Mini M1 with only 8GB of ram and it runs perfectly! Final Cut Pro, Affinity photo and designer are all smooth running without issue. I don't think most people will ever need anything more powerful unless they are a hefty user or a professional. Only 8GB ram seems too small but I've never noticed it having any problems, I don't care that it's offloading memory to my harddrive either it's not like it's going to make it fail anytime soon. I don't think ill ever buy a new mac for years to come! Has Apple shot itself in the foot with the M1 chip? I think so.

8 GB are just fine for 95 percent of users buying the Mac mini. Fact. I do light photo editing, some music editing and some very light video editing. M1 Mac mini with 8 GB works perfectly. Paid $690 of it, including 3 years of AppleCare. Fastest computer that I've ever used in my entire life. Love it.

I think the biggest reason to get a studio is if you’re editing pro res raw or HEVC h265 a lot. Those codecs are difficult to work with on the lower M1 models, especially the h265 10 bit files. You really need those media encoders built in in order to have a good editing experience. If you’re a video professional you can absolutely use the Mac mini, but if you do a lot of high end work and don’t wanna make proxies for every project, save yourself the time and headache and get a studio.

an M1 pro MBP and even normal M1 MBP cuts through h265 10bit 422 4K like butte rin FCP. so it's more a matter of longevity - the studio will last you 10 years probably, the MBP half (my educated guess from having had all kinds of macs for a very long time)

For a pro, the cost of a Mac Studio is really negligible. The real cost is the software and the time so a little saving in time helps to amortize the product very quickly.

@@JohnMoran the goal is to have to tools work at the artist’s speed. If an artist had to wait for their brush to load more paint after each stroke, or had to sharpen their pencil after each line. For CPU bound workflows like audio production the M1 Ultra *is* a perfectly linear increase in performance and even a little more than 2x, most likely due to the increased memory bandwidth. It's the GPU cores that don't seem to scale as well, so apps that benefit from graphics performance aren't seeing as big of a jump.

For me the m1 mini was dramatic, in premiere with Canon footage (c70 and c500) it was necessary to use proxies. In davinci it gave lots of problems as well. I now have the studio max with 64gb and the fasted max cpu, and everything is smooth. I would have loved the m1 ultra, but it was a bit too expensive.

I got the base ultra and the render times are remarkably faster … and I keep photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, and Resolve open and active all day and have none of the slowdowns or stuttering that I had with my Mac Mini. I work with Lightroom 23 and Capture One Pro 23 - both need way more memory than 16GB for big archives. For this I hate Apple again. These M1 Macs still need so much RAM. So, unfortunately next time I need to get 64GB soldered overpriced memory… You can't trust these influencers on KZbin.

But you also made a very good point: if you're serious about creating, spend the extra money on something you really need as you'll be spending the same on a less capable machine when upgrading it. This is something many people don't get..... Though it is a lower point of entry....

IMO, Apple and a lot of its fan-bloggers did customers a great disservice by pushing the "8GB is just like 16GB" meme. If you're using Sketch, Photoshop or Xcode then you very quickly realise that regardless of Apple Silicon magic, 8GB is definitely *not* enough. I think Mac minis should ship with a minimum 16GB. But then Apple wouldn't be able to charge exorbitant sums for an extra 8GB of RAM, and you don't get to be the world's biggest company by being ethical.

Long Story Short: Listen to Raf Long Story Long: This popped out right after I placed my order for an M1 Ultra Mac Studio, I was wondering what ur gonna say and feel so relieved now that I watched it and saw ur thoughts :D I ordered a 20-CPU, 48-GPU, 128-RAM, 4TB-SSD version and I'm waiting for it, It's gonna be a huge leap for me, my first MacOS Main Computer, I'm so nervous and also ready to edit on it! For anybody reading this, I 100% support what Raf said about time being ur most important asset! I'm currently editing a fairly simple project that's like, imagine a podcast with some vlogging elements to it, some epic rock music broll in the intro and the other stuff is just cuts and switching cameras... It's taking me forever to edit this and I'm working on it for weeks now, not because it's hard but because of how bad my PC is, it was good for the 6 years it served me but now it's time for a new one, with an M1 Ultra I'd be able to edit this in 2-3 days, now that's weeks... It's not only crashes and other struggles but also proxies, when having a bad computer you sacrifice a lot of time for exporting proxies which is such an exhausting experience... Back on the topic, I was worried for lagging issues cuz I'm a premiere editor but now that I see ur editing on an M1 Max with 32GB, I feel pretty safe & calm with my choice... And yeah, it sure is a lot of money, it's $5800 which is 13K here in Bulgaria (the standard here is about 4x lower so everything u call expensive is 4x more expensive for us) but fuck it, I spent the last 6 years with a basic gaming PC i made for gaming when I was younger and didn't have anything to do with filmmaking, 13K is nothing for probably the next 5-10 years of editing! My current PC spread out into days comes at about 1$ a day for the 6 years I got it, which is totally worth it! I don't have any idea why I wrote such an essay, just realised how long it is but I've written it so I'll post it anyways xD

I’ve had my M1 Ultra for about 3 months and it has been fantastic. Hefty build quality, tons of ports, and enough performance headroom to last me for years. I have no idea how a system this small could be this powerful and run so cool. Most of the time the SoC doesn’t exceed 40°C and even with all cores pushed I’ve never seen it go above 55°. They’ve clearly built this thing for longevity.

Well, I wonder if you used ProRes, but didn’t do a lot of color work - just simple corrections - if you’d actually see better performance because of the optimization of ProRes on MacOS with apple silicon. A non-compressed file format that’s larger, but easier for the computer to process.

I used the M1 Mini since it came out and it was more than adequate to get the job done for me but the studio solved all the issues I was having where the Mini fell short. I got the Mac mini M1 with 16gb and 2tb drive.. it's great.. later when I get a Mac Studio my mini will be relegated to music creation (hence the 2tb hdd for sound samples like my Native Instruments Komplete that is over 1 Terabyte for instance. I will probably order a Mac Studio base configuration and bump up the GPU and memory.. though honestly at a certain point it might make sense for the $4,000 version since I also do animations etc.. and lots of animation programs utilize CPU instead of GPU.. if I was just interested in photoshop and video editing (BRAW C4K or better) then the Mac Studio would be enough I think since that's is what everyone is saying. The only issue I have with my base model Mac mini is it can't seem to recognize my usb hub so I can use my portable hard drives. If and when I have the money I will buy a full size Mac as I have trouble seeing text on my 48 inch Sony Bravia. Eventually I will get the next version of the studio with Final Cut when they upgrade it.

Honest question looking for an honest answer: do you find that you make more ‘incremental’ upgrades to your gear knowing that it’s fertile territory for content for your YT channel? Put another way - if your only focus was your client work, would you maintain your production workflow for longer spells and then only upgrade when there’s a clear business case (or even a problem)?

Hi Eifion. I have never bought something for the sole purpose of making a YT video. everything I buy I intend to use. The Mac mini was a purchase for my wife, that gave me the opportunity to test out the claims that somehow it was magical for people like me. Spoiler, it wasn't. But it was a solid little machine that got me really excited about where apple was heading. I had a Mac Pro from 2008 till 2015, then 2 MacBook Pros from 2015 to 2021 - I started using the Mac mini as a daily driver for 3 months in 2022, until I got the Mac Studio. I plan on getting a Mac Pro but probably not for another year or 2 as the Mac studio is fantastic for my current workflow and set up. It really impresses me! When I did have the Mac Pro, I did upgrade the internal components, more ram, faster GPUs, more storage over the life of ownership, that is how I was able to get to last so long. My main focus IS client work, YT gives me the chance to showcase what I actually use day to day, what actually works, Tested tools and proven processes. That is why I have rarely done reviews right after something comes out, typically 3 months after using it. For instance, I picked up a Sony FX3 back in December, and haven't make a review video on the camera yet. But that is coming. Thanks for watching and the thoughtful question!
@eifionjones8513
@eifionjones8513 2 жыл бұрын
@@RafaelLudwig hey thanks for your comprehensive and honest answer. Just to be exact - I don’t doubt that client work is your MAIN focus, just that (like most of us in this digital/social age) it’s not your ONLY focus. I feel that all of us these days are pulled and influenced by market forces that have way more power over our subconscious than we did 10 or 20 years ago and it’s harder than ever to see whether our purchasing decisions are rooted in genuine need. I appreciate you for being one of the few KZbinrs whose main focus is client work and so your reviews and assessments are grounded in the reality of delivering a service as a business outside of YT. Look forward to your fx3 video - I was tempted to leave my C200 for the fx3 and after a stubborn period of sticking with the c200 I finally traded it for the c70. Whilst I must say that it’s the best fit for my workflow yet, I could also argue that my work is no better and my clients are no happier than when I was rocking my c100 mk1 before either of them. I started on a canon xl1 20yrs ago and things have come a long way but it’s marginal gains these days. Keep doing your thing man, learning new skills and sharing your knowledge 👊
@RafaelLudwig
@RafaelLudwig 2 жыл бұрын
@@eifionjones8513 I teetered back and forth on the C70, nearly pulling the trigger to get it. Then the R5.... The C200 is still such a nice camera for me. I decided on the Fx3 as a supplemental camera, as it could do things that the c200/c70 could not do. Ultra clean low light (it's rediculous) the IBIS is nice for quick handheld b-roll, the Slow mo 240 is nice to have with autofocus still. And it's tiny. which is nice on the back. There are things I love about it and things that are frustrating. But the one two combo of the c200 and Fx3 I am covered. All the details will be in the review in a few weeks.

@@RafaelLudwig nice! I’m pretty set with the c70 and r6 combo for my doc style projects but the fx3 is defo a tempting proposition. The c200 raw has more bite and texture to it IMO than the c70 footage but I don’t miss the workflow. The c200 8bit sometimes delivered the goods but other times fell apart. I like being able to stick the c70 in a backpack for run and gun doc and get nearly c200 raw results with 2 lavs and a shotgun on camera. The clog 2 arri lut I created in resolve for the c200 works great on the c70 footage in premiere and the DR on the c70 is a seriously good. Fx3 looks like a serious tool though 👍

@RafaelLudwig
@RafaelLudwig 2 жыл бұрын
I was looking at the benq PD3220U, but the tech in it is nearly 5 years old and was hoping there would be an update to it. Got tired of waiting for it. The main difference between the SW and PD is just a higher standard of color fidelity. More accurate colours, I would get this is color calibration is crucial, if you will be printing or color grading high end productions, otherwise the PD series is 95% accurate. I also have the LG 650 it's good compared to the 950, but lacks thunderbolt and isn't as nice in the color accuracy, when right beside the 950. Avoid the 550 at all costs, it really doesn't play nice with Macs at the moment, well at least the 3 that I have. I have not played with the Pro-Art series, too rich for my needs (at least the one I was looking at)! Hope this helps!

*HEED MY WORDS: DO NOT BUY EITHER!* Understand that ALL DRIVES CRASH. Drive failure is the #1 computer problem and historically, you simply replace them and you're back in business- this fix is as simple as replacing a car battery. Unfortunately, it's now impossible to swap out the drive on a Mac Studio or a Mac Mini. They're essentially _"unrepairable"_ *WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?* The average lifespan of a Mac used to be 10-15 years, now it's 3-4. I have been repairing Macs for 21 years and since the start of 2020, we've been bombarded with clients suffering from drive failures and they all say the same thing: _"I've never had a hard drive crash"_ or _"My last Mac lasted 12 years"_ They're not wrong, Mac's used to last 5x longer. I have over 20 Macs that are well into their twenties. In fact, not only do I have the original Macintosh 128k M00001 in perfect working condition, but I HAVE TWO OF THEM. You need to understand that all drives inevitably crash. It could last 1 year, or it could last 5, but it *will* crash. I've even seen new Macs that shipped with faulty drives that were _dead on arrival_ when you took it out of the box. Now, I think you're insane if you buy one of the high-end fully-loaded Mac Studios, but you'd be a *complete idiot to not *buy AppleCare+* for $169.* Just know that after 3 years, you're on your own with an unrepairable $5,799 computer. Oh there's just one other thing... AppleCare+ isn't _full coverage_ and depending on the issue, you can expect to shell out between $99 - $300 for repairs. Now you might be wondering... _How could Apple sell us irreparable computers that only last a few years?_ The answer is quite simple: *BECAUSE YOU KEEP BUYING THEM*

That is a great question: It will depend how much expansion you will need. If you don't require PCI cards, or graphics cards, then the Studio would be the better choice, max out the processor and Ram. It will all depend on what apple actually offers with the Mac Pro. And what the cost difference will be. If money is no issue, the pro will be the stronger choice, though if money is a consideration, then the studio may provide a better performance to price ratio. I am still using a mac pro from 2010 :-) best mac ever - besides the design of the cube that was too early to be understood. Upgraded it over the years, every thing, memory up to 128gb, 4 disks with 8 GB, new graphic card. But more and more apps need a newer OS, so I just ordered a Mac Studio basis. My husband got the bigger ultra model half a year ago and loves it a lot. Now let’s see if the Mac studio will last another 10 years. Especially the SSD cards are much, much too expensive. I used to change hardware like discs and ram myself. Now it’s not possible anymore. 😞

After using my M1 MacBook Air since March with 16 GB shared memory, and monitoring it with iStat menus I see that I do not see it using swap at all, most all of the time. I hate swap so if you feel like I do that you want data to always be in memory for fastest access, and also cut down on the wear, and tear on your SSD storage purchase a Mac with 16 GB shared memory. "Fight the swap!" Also Apple should make all Mac devices with a minimum of 512 GB SSD storage. Then for the "Pro" models they should have the fastest SSD devices that Apple can put in its devices. True professionals should always purchase the best tool to do the job. I feel that the Mac Studio is the best solution for professionals at this time.

I bought a Studio Max yesterday to replace an M1 mini that I've been using for 16 months. I was using the mini along with an iMac with 32 GB of RAM as there wasn't enough RAM to run production and office. I was doing video editing on my MacBook Pro and on the mini when it wasn't running production. I run 3 4k monitors off the mini with one under DisplayPort. The DisplayPort monitor sometimes lags because it's a hack solution. I am hoping to replace the iMac and the mini with the Studio. I could always use the Studio and the mini as I can partition my workload between multiple machines. The performance issues have been costing me time which also means costing me money.
