My office had about 7 $5,000 USD iMac Pros. It was painful to have to dispose of them because we switched our creative team to MacBook Pros and the iMacs could not be reused as displays without taking them apart. Even if it's uglier, buying discrete components makes much more sense in the long run, for nearly every type of consumer, than using an AIO. I know that after that experience, I will never endorse buying an all in one again, unless there's a very specific commercial use (think point of sale terminal or something consumers don't care about).

@aspensareprettyneat4002 Жыл бұрын
@@arturoehr this isn’t still the case, but the original reason they killed target display mode was because of the switch to the 5K panel. At the time, the hardware on a larger scale just wasn’t ready. DisplayPort could not handle 5K, so internally it was using two DisplayPort inputs and stitching it together to get a 5K image. Without some software magic and using two separate cables to connect to the iMac, target display mode just wasn’t possible at the time. Obviously display cables caught up and they could have done it with a single thunderbolt cable including PD charging for a MacBook for a nice one cable setup a few years now. But at least *originally* there was a legitimate reason for it.

Over that time I had two iMacs, a 24" which is still running with another family and my most recent 27" (2013) which recently died. I had been holding out hoping for a new 27" iMac to appear but finally was forced to order a machine. I opted for the MacMini with the M2Pro and the Apple Studio Display. I agree with a lot of your thoughts here and decided that given I got nearly 10 years out of my last machine a bit of a splurge wasn't a major issue.

Great video! Your analysis is exactly what I am encountering in upgrading the 2015 iMacs in my classroom. They have ended their OS upgrade cycle. Because the new Macs need to be ordered now to be in the classroom for August, I have to forgo a M2 iMac since they don't yet exist. I am having to buy pretty much what you specked, including an alternative to the high priced Mac monitor. Apple should have released the 27in M2 iMac in early 2023 so they could be ordered for next school year.

My partner has a 2015 5K iMac. The 27" display is genuinely beautiful to look at. The only issue with it is the fusion drive. It has bit the dust and getting inside the PC is frustrating.

I would love having a 28 inch imac with apple silicon and 5k display, so much more tidy and the thin body they come in with colors would be super cool too, they could do a 28in and 32 would be ideal and sell like crazy

I think the iMac had its place but as soon as they removed target display mode it went downhill. Although the modular set up as nice as you only have to change out certain components as needed and then they can be regifted a new life. Both in upgrading the system and handing off old components to somebody else.

My 2013 27" inch iMac bit the dust a few weeks back and after much deliberation I decided on the Mac Mini M2 Pro with an Asus 32inch 1440P monitor, I already had the other peripherals so I'm all in at $1700 which today in my eyes is a Bargain considering the iMac cost me $2400 new back then. I have to say I'm glad I went this route, I absolutely love this little rocket and will be expanding the storage down the road.

Dear MacAdress, please make a video about the native “retina”-scaling and why 4K is a bad idea. To get the moast out of your display when using a Mac mini or Mac Studio, you need to drive a 2k or 5/6k display. This is really interesting. I researched ALOT before I bought my BENQ 27 2k-display for editing video. And it is awesome!

I just bought the MacBook Pro M2 Max upgrading from my 2017 Intel iMac and I spent so long trying to research a monitor that was 32-in for a decent price. I ultimately went with the Samsung QN 90B 43-in display. It's very close for color accuracy when calibrated, the only downside is the viewing angles. But the brightness is comparable to OLED and works really well for video editing and as a workspace for managing a lot of windows of projects at the same time.

I've never been a big believer in the iMac, because of the screen-computer coupling. Laptops of course suffer from the same coupling, however, that coupling solves a problem (portability) that the iMac does not. I've had a 43" 4k display for use in my music studio now for several years, at least five. I've used it with two Mac minis, occasionally with a MacBook Pro, and now, with my Mac Studio. I'm actually looking for a second 4K monitor for it, so perhaps ASUS' sponsorship paid off ;-)

I am appreciative of your video on how to break affordably 😢 into the Apple desktop for 2023. Thanks for some ideas, but for me not having a 27” iMac is a letdown, for... When rumors of the M1 iMac came out I was excited. I thought, ‘Finally! I can upgrade my ancient 2013 27” iMac to a modern M1 CPU’. Well, it’s been quite a wait, still no affordable 5k option ever showed up from Apple. So, sadly in the meantime I’ve become a traitor to Apple and jumped ship for Linux Manjaro which has the software I need, without the Apple price hike. I think that something hard and heavy would have to land on my head before I would shell out thousands for a Mac.

M2 Pro is double the size of M2 and M2 in the vid was 8GB RAM while M2 Pro was 32GB RAM (RAM increases performance as well). And if the M2 is the same as the same M2 in the MacBook Air, the SSD speeds also will be way slower because of production issues, which is seen with the M2 MacBook Pros as well

Because my friend and her kids don't care that it can't render 4k videos or do 3d models super quickly when all they want is a home computer that lets them browse the web, text, and maybe make video calls. It's a relatively cheap desktop that can do all of that without issue, sits in a compact area, and is made by a reputable company.

I am not sure what I will do when the 2014 and 2017 are no longer useable. I prefer the all-in-one design vs. modular but, I may not have much choice when the time comes.

My setup has been a 12.9in, 2018 iPad Pro with a magic keyboard and an base model M1 Mac mini since release. I use this physical usb-c stick called luna display/astro pad to use it as a display for the mac when i need it, or just 100% disconnected when my wifi behaves. You’d think you didn’t need the third party fix but not even with the newer continuity features or sidecar you can quite just plug them with a cable and them just working…

Thank you, for another enjoyable Apple desktop system video. What, I miss about the 27-inch iMac Pro and the 27-inch iMac models was they provided the user with choice. In 1996, I picked-up my first Apple desktop computer an All-in-One 5400 (had built-in speakers, Sony CRT, CD-ROM drive, floppy drive, Apple internal video card system with editing software, and Apple internal TV/FM card system with its matching black remote control); next was an All-in-One glossy white 20-inch G5 iMac; followed by a glossy white 24-inch Intel iMac. Afterward, I said no more Apple desktop All-in-One computers for myself and picked-up a 2010 "mac mini" (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive) and paired it with a 2010, Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display. If buying new today, I would get the "mac mini" Pro and the "Studio Display". Why? Because no need for external speakers, external web camera, and the 5K display (smile...smile).

I love the Mac Mini M2. I bought mine as soon as they came out with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I’m using a Mac Mouse and Keyboard from an unused iMac. I bought a ProArt 24” display last week (it’s not the model in this video) and I’m not impressed in the least. It works but it’s not a good display compared to Apple hardware. I’ve also got an LG 42” display; it is much better but not as nice as the 5K iMac 27” displays I’m used to. I’m still considering how to get a better display without shelling out for a studio display.
