Even though the MacBook Pro with M1 chip doesn't support natively many apps, it's very difficult to find windows laptop with same performance and battery life in this form factor, laptop that doesn't get too hot or too loud at this price point (1100$-1300$). Completely agree Daniel!! I don't use my mac much unplugged from the wall (i.e., via battery) BUT the performance is just unreal and is why I won't be leaving apple anytime soon. This new chip with the lower price point is going to have a lot of people switching over!

@@zeblackboi nah he's right. Dell XPS and ThinkPad are pretty close to the M1 though. But the issue with DeLL is its trackpad clicking when you apply a little bit of pressure on the palm rest. Kinda annoying.

Hi buddy :) I am I have found your channel . I am actually studying Logistics but meanwhile I want to learn some data science stuff where I am on doing Excel now but If I do consider going into University next year and hopefully starting job within the industry in 2-3 years I still believe Mac will be better. I have bought M1 and how it does work if unbelievable ! I still can use Parallels and ARM Windows on VM which works really nice while having great battery and performance. I am quite happy that you are doing some of the stuff on Mac :)

Can you recommend the M1 Macbook Air 8GB or 16GB if I only use MS word, powerpoint, excel particularly for creating dashboards with lots of formula, pivot tables, Power Query with more than a million rows, Power Pivot, VBA? Hey my dude, this is a great questions. So it depends... My thought process would be like this: Do you use Windows primarily throughout the day... if the answer is Yes for this one then you should consider going with a PC. Do you use Windows occasionally... in this case I would say go with the M1 macbook air. The solution with Parallels (VM) and Windows for ARM isn't perfect, BUT it works pretty damn good in my opinion. (Sidenote: I don't recommend getting the intel mac at this point in the game. Mac is shifting to M1 so efforts will be focused on improvements to this chip... not Intel)

When I used to be a computer science student, I had a macbook pro. The biggest problem was around Java version and operating system version. I needed the last java version because my homework needed arraylist so I needed to add the new os version in order to use the last Java version. I don’t judge but my Ada program compile without any problem after over 20 years. If I make a big projet, this is a pc on linux with c++. Too much problem after five years with these tools

The only downside for me as a psychology researcher with macOS is the lack of IBM AMOS. However, you can do the same work and more on RStudio for free natively on MacOS

Hey Zaki, with those needs I feel that Tableau is going to be the biggest resource user for your need (potentially python next). Nonetheless, all these options seem like great options. I would try to get 16 gb of ram if possible, but if not 8 gb should suffice. All these seem to have good CPUs

Eduardo, if you ported R over from an existing Mac, then you are running x86 R through Rosetta 2. You need to do a clean install of R for ARM64 to get the benefit of the M1 chip for R

Potentially... with the M1 you'd have to use a VM to host power bi, so it's going to be A LOT more resource intensive. I think you would need a 16gb m1 to have similiar performance.

Hey Luke! I'm over here in the trenches looking for my next laptop. My 15.6" Envy (only 8gb) glitches ALL THE TIME especially with split-screen during my programming courses. I just can't trust any other HP for more glitching and blacked out screens. SO I am now looking for a strong 17" laptop, probably a gaming laptop, with at least 4 cores, 16gb, 1 TB SSD, GeForce GTX1650, / NVMe, WITH a 10-key numpad and a dedicated GPU. I am about to start a Data Vis course with Kevin via ELVTR. Can you possibly do a video re: larger (16" + laptops), which you would recommend and which to avoid and why? Right now, I'm looking at getting the Lenovo 17" Legion 5. Thoughts? 😵‍💫🤯😅

@@LukeBarousse I have a M1 Mac, importing csv file automatically with Mysql always import lesser rows, unlike Msql on windows, it imports the complete rows. U can also try this from ur end. I think they're all good but I prefer windows for data analysis

Great Video. I'm a long time windows user who's ready to jump ship for the m1 8/8. My only reservation is Windows 11 not playing nice because of Secure Boot TPM issues. I'm not sure if I can totally escape the windows environment, and I dont know if anyone is sure that we'll be able to virtualize 11 without some kind of subscription service.

PC for data science or work. Optimised first, years of difference in support level, full app access full support for Python deep learning extensions. Mac for personal use and enjoyment. As Mac is playing catch up in terms of access, optimisation, compatibility etc.

Would you recommend M1 Air (8GB) or Asus G14 Zephyrus (16GB, Ryzen 5800HS and Nvidia 1650 4GB) I know nothing of this field and I dont know how much or what resources I am gonna need, both laptops are similarly priced in my country. Currently using Docker and Azure data studio only Mac and as a very beginner data analyst I am struggling. It's so funny how this video laid out everything so clearly with a conclusion and a explicit recommendation, but there are still so many people asking in the comments if Luke would recommend M1 over PC... That really shows how much people just love apple. If you are very used to using one OS for ML/DL work, would you say it's harder to switch entirely from windows to mac or from mac to windows? (hopefully my question makes sense...)

Regarding ML/DL work, I don't think it's hard to switch. From what I've seen for this your usually using some cloud based tools or code that is OS agnostic. So in that case I don't think it really is relevant at all what operating system you are using.

Hey Yash, the cloud platform you use is really dependent on what your employer/clients use. They have a few major providers so it really depends. I wouldn't say that just because you use Windows that you should learn about Azure.

@@d2r3krs33 Because there is a difference. A Mac is a Mac/Apple, it's own dedicated strict configs are accessible and there is no modifying anything other than a few options. A PC is a personal computer which you can modify or not but there are endless configurations. You can have UNIX or LINUX or Windows or or Windows 11 Pro or Windows 10 Home. And I hate to be Captain Obvious, but how do you tell anyone what words to use that accurately describe something they and the world have been PROFESSIONALLY using and naming for decades?
