Well, it's not very day that you bump into the King! But that's exactly what happened on this bike ride.
We were riding on Balmoral estate, and there were plenty of Range Rovers and guards with guns, but we didn't actually expect to see or speak to the King in the way that we did.
I'm not a big fan of the Royal family, in fact, I suppose I could be described as anti-establishment. That doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy meeting King Charles, and it doesn't stop him from being a very nice man to talk to either.

PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING!! While there were no guards within sight of the camera, please know that the King very much had plenty of security nearby and numerous vehicles had scouted the route the King was walking before and after him. He had his own space, but still very much protected, as you would expect for a King.

for a king the true privilege is to be able to walk alone, meet other walkers on his way and exchange a few words about the weather without feeling the weight of his crown.
@embreis2257

@@misterwhite37 it says a lot about a country if the head of state has security which affords him a feeling of being 'free' and engage in casual chats with strangers without compromising his personal safety. no US president would get away with this mindset. but then again, it all happened on his own private property and he has already done most of his duty by firmly securing the line of succession. it surely is a great pleasure for him to occasionally feel almost 'normal' and not in his formal role of king all day. meeting 'ordinary' people and not always ministers, offcials, foreign dignitaries and somesuch must be a relief he cherishes

The end of the interaction with the king, when he says don’t fall off… he knows the path you are taking and probably thinks you are crazy for doing it but admires you all for it too. What I really liked about the conversation with the king was the questions. He would be used to being asked some ridiculous things or the same things all the time, but you kept it relevant. Just like asking any land owner if some old building are still in use. He seemed to really enjoy the conversation and appeared to be thinking back to when he was younger as well. Well done.

Turns out he was a famous hockey player (whose name I've forgotten again), which, in Canada, is pretty much like being royalty. I realized he was famous when people asked him for his autograph. I was super into fitness, so we compared notes on fitness routines and stuff. He also talked about the younger players who liked to date a lot, and how he couldn't imagine doing that, and how much he loved his wife. He was really nice. I also met the prime minister from the same party at a festival in Stavanger once and at two o'clock at night while being fairly drunk she just said "I think it's time I leave" and she just walked by herself with no bodyguards to the hotel. I figured this was only possible in Norway, but watching Charles walking without bodyguards it seems it's also the case for the UK. I honestly agree! My country Sweden also has a king, just like Charles here he is not head of government, only head of state. I find them both to be quite lovely men and certainly represent our countries cultures and values better than any elected politician ever could. These are two vastly different roles! I understand anti-monarchists too, their arguments make sense, but I simply believe we should consider tackling the real issues our societies face on a political level before going for grand symbolic gestures like getting rid of our monarchy. The nouveau riche are so often somehow more snobbish than the old nobility. Baffles my mind. The CEOs especially seem so withdrawn from life. Figures that getting rid of monarchy doesn't rid a country of aristocracy. Maybe nothing can rid a country from the elites. The thing I can see that was better in a more traditional system of elites is that you KNOW who they are, where they live, and if you peeked through a window you may catch a young king playing with his children, right next to his office, where he receives petitions from the people. Every one knows about the American lobbies and the influence corporations have unto their government, but we don't have any names or anything. There's no transparency. "The Elites" or "the establishment" bring no faces to mind.

You should read some history. It's not great. The most evil people to ever exist are perfectly capable of acting civil for the most part. I don't consider crimes against humanity and the freedom of citizen's to be a "political opinion". FYI, one of the most public things is the strange evidence surrounding Diana's death. A lot of coincidences such as Diana revealing Charles's affair and growing animosity. Not to mention growing immense wealth while the country sees extreme poverty get worse every year for decades under his watch (however, usual for the royal family). Just the fact that a constitutional monarchy still exists for a superpower country with fission weapons in the modern time is insane. These people should all be put on a rope by the public and elect representatives that are fit for power and executive decisions, with wealth removed from the equation.

There was a story told by an associate of the late Queen, he was out walking with her, in a similar scenario to this, and they bumped into some American tourists. They didn't recognise the Queen, but they mentioned that they heard the Royals go walking here and how fantastic it would be to meet one. The Queen pointed to the person she was with and said, "he knows the Royals, in fact he's good friends with the Queen", so the tourists wanted to have a photo with the friend, after they took it, the Queens friend suggested a photo with everyone in it. And then they parted ways. They had no idea they just met the Queen, maybe one day someone else saw the photo and pointed it out to them.

@@charlieparkeris I heard of the story too, it's literally a Royal prank! It's of course making a bit of fun of the tourists knowing about the Queen but not recognizing her, at the same time, it made the encounter mostly unique for them. The story goes that they made the Queen take a picture of them with him. Then he insisted they should include his "friend" in the next picture. So as far they knew, that was a picture of them with a friend of the Queen, plus the friend of the friend of the Queen. None of which is technically false.

Queenie used to meet folks out and about on the same estate over the years, although latterly she always had someone with her. Family friends of mine met her there, they did recognise her and they had a nice wee chat. The locals at Balmoral are very protective of the family apparently, and they really can just wander about, go into the local shops etc, and folks are pleased to see them but never bothersome. Must be nice to have somewhere they can enjoy that kind of freedom.

The Royals genuinely love Balmoral as it is the closest they get to being normal - they can walk, her late Majesty used to drive herself around... so it was lovely that Charles took time to talk with folk similarly enjoying the fresh air.

Wasn't this Balmoral? It is a large estate belonging to the monarch with areas deliberately designed to allow long walks. And the security is discreetly deployed. I was surprised to see that ordinary people would be allowed anywhere near the King while he is at the property. It was cool to see the pleasant interaction with the biking group.

That quip at around 05:44 "Don't fall off" was quite cheeky. He seems like a nice guy. As a non-UK person, I was under the impression that meeting a royal, especially *the* top royal would require getting off your bikes and curtsying or whatever, but instead we got a nice chat. I liked that he was very specific too about where he wanted to plant more trees. And that descent down the rocks was quite awesome! My heart was in my throat and only let out a breath once you came back to the clearing.

Many times we view history as just notable personalities, families, occurences and dates without realizing the human aspect of it all. History goes from one generation to the next through retold stories, however minor and mundane. The way he talks of what his family members used to do in that area is awesome considering that those memories are from nearly 70 years ago and he is from a family of historical significance. As someone mentioned in the comments, this is truly a moment that resembles a medieval run in with the king of the land. Different ages, same interaction.
