The tourist side of Macau with all the casinos ➡️ • 1st Time In Macau, The...
My first time In Macau! Let's have a look behind the glamour of the casinos.
I arrived in Macau two days ago and in my first video from this city we had a look at the famous places, the casinos and the places that are full with tourists. But I am also curious the see the other side of Macau. The side where the locals live, behind the glamour of all the casinos and neon lights. Join me as we explore the very northern end of Macao, as well as the very southern end.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, east Asia and south Asia. It is my goal here on the channel to visit every country in these Asian regions and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see many tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.

Yeah, Ken, l know you are a border enthusiast, always keen to explore border of countries you have visited. Finally, you managed to come so close to the border between Macau and mainland China. Great job and l'm very sure China is on your bucket list. Thanks a bunch for sharing this border adventure.

The area you walked through around 15:45 is actually very close to the border and most of the people you saw walking around there buying the alcohol and stuff are mainland chinese people coming to Macau especially to buy it. China has a huge luxury tax on high price products, as such certain items are cheaper in Macau or easier to find compared to mainland so you have many daytrippers coming to stock up on items. Also many mainland workers in Macau live in Zhuhai (the Chinese city which shares a border with Macau) since the cost of living there is much lower and commute back and forth between China and Macau every day, what you saw at 18:50 .

Wow, there is a vast difference here in Northern and Southern tip of Macau....no more "Las Vegas of Asia" 😂 Love this authentic side of Macau. That Hac Sa/Black Sand beach is known for its striking black sand. I read somewhere that it gets it unique colour from minerals in the seabed. Amazing that you are trying all the street food, Portuguese bbq ( pork chop bun) and Portuguese egg tarts. Well, another amazing video with amazing content. Love this episode and a massive thanks for sharing this part of Macau with us. Cheers, Ken.

Hi Ken, happy to see that you are having a wonderful time in Macau. Macau is the city where I grew up, I haven't been back for almost 7 years after I moved overseas. I hardly recognised the places anymore. I'm planning to go back and visit this summer, I'll surely walk around, find back those memories! By the way, you are so brave to try those street food :P

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode as I only visited Macau on a day trip and did not have much time as I spent a while around the Ruins of St. Paul's and the surrounding area. It was fascinating to watch you interacting with the street vendors, those custard tarts (Pasteis de Nata) are now sold in Lidl, so I am sure you can get them in Germany when you visit home!

I hope you won't go to the other side of the border, it should be very dangerous. If you go, please be very careful! I couldn't see which tea that lady pointed to at the end, or I could translate it for you! Very sorry for that! Curry fish ball is actually a well-known snack in Hong Kong. It is made of fish for sure. I believe you should have seen it on the streets of Hong Kong! That so-called lobster salad wrapped in fish balls is usually made of fish eggs with some seasonings. If there is lobster inside, it should not be so cheap! I am so happy to see that you finally ate Portuguese egg tarts, thank you very much for sharing! 👍😄🙏

I am so enjoying your excursions! Macau really is lovely once you get away from the casinos. Some quick notes: 1) the tea you had was "Five Flower Tea." Generally healthy; balances "hot" and "cold" in Chinese medicine. 2) LOL so much confusion at the skewer shop. The thing he pointed to on the sign is the second blobby thing you ate in the video. You were close when you said it looked like dough! It's meen gan (she tried to say it in Mandarin thinking that you would understand that better). It's called seitan in English and it's made from wheat gluten. A nod to vegetarianism although I'm sure it's drenched in meat sauce. Not sure what the ball with the filling is. The guy didn't say what it was other than "this one is really good!" To my eye, it looks like intestines with a stuffing (cheese?) that has been battered and fried. 3) Watching your video is making me hungry :)

Macau's casino hotels are quite pricey so a lot of mainland tourists cross the border back and forth and stay in Zhuhai for the night, where prices are only a fraction. Behind where you got the ice-cream is the main northern border crossing. There are a few more border crossings near the casinos on Cotai but those go to a more remote part of Zhuhai.

Ken, you should come to Vancouver, Canada. Our Cantonese food is considered even better than Hong Kong. You might be wondering why, but it is because there is a huge Chinese population in the Greater Vancouver. Richmond alone right next to Vancouver is like a mini HK. And I agree that pork chop bun is dry even when I’ve tried at the HK cafes here in Canada.

Some people were washing the street while you were eating. And the place you saw many people are buying wines, they were doing parallel import😂, it is so funny to see someone to explore my neighborhood which is not a very good or modern place. Pity you didn’t see my message on IG and here. I could have taken you on several ancient trails areas near the Chinese border where illegal immigrants used to escape into HK. In fact the first time I went with a local runner and he didn’t realise I had no visa. About 16 years ago. He was very shocked and worried when he told me we were now in China and I told him I had no visa. We had to run a couple of kms uphill to avoid being caught. He showed me a photo of Shenzhen from 30 years ago it’s really grown fast, Macau is an interesting day trip for HK people - haven’t been since Covid so will make may way over there soon.

If you are going to Mainland china, payment will be a problem for foreign tourist. Many shops are relutant to recieve cash(yes, even their own currency), or they can recieve but no change. Because people are all using mobile payment which doesnt accept tourist to use. And international credit card (visa master) are useless there. So it is better to always keep small amount of cash notes (like 10~20 CNY).
