One note: Macau wasn't exactly "taken". It's an interesting centuries long story, look it up. Ancient portuguese, in spite of their own religious zealotry, were excellent diplomats that made good use of the militarily-earned respect in mutually beneficial arrangements (until long-term circumstances allowed for bigger power grabs). Also, portuguese didn't relinquish Macau because they were a former shell of its colonial might and wanted to hold on to it, the democratic portuguese government tried to give back Macau a few years earlier even, but the CCP didn't want the hassle of trying to implement communism in Macau when it had so much to deal with, Macau might have been the beginning of rebelion in that case, or they would have to foregoe maoist dogmas for the region, which they weren't politically ready to at the time. Besides backing off the colonial wars at a time where Portugal was militarily winning (though having no more will to fight under democracy), it also gave independence to colonies that weren't really fighting for it, from previously uninhabited islands before the portuguese, like Cape Verde that had only ever been portuguese, not being clear they even had a democratic majority wanting full independence, or an Azorean / Madeiran style of autonomy. But it was an hardcore anti-colonial regime, so bye bye, best of luck, don't want to debate whether you even want to stay portuguese or another type of union. So, it wasn't "a weak former colonial power" at all, it wasn't a colonial system, period.
