Quick disclaimer Both of these birds are free flight trained and have been flying outdoors almost daily for about 4-5 years. To free flight train a bird takes time and patience, anywhere between 3-6 months for a flighted bird. It’s a lot of desensitisation, positive reinforcement, a bunch of recall training, a great diet etc. There are professional free flight trainers and experienced mentors which help. It’s great that they can tell us they want out by looking slightly unsettled, screaming and staring outside haha. We are in Bedfordshire UK where most of the birds of prey around us are either scavengers or would never even attempt to take down a bird like a macaw so no real risk there. Noise wise for the neighbours, their are only loud a few mins a day, after a few flies, they chill out a lot and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Hope this answers everyone’s questions and DO NOT let your untrained birds fly out your living room doors!

We take them to parks in the winter maybe 2-3 times a week for maybe 20-30mins if its above 5 degrees C, they would rather be outside for a quick fly over being indoors all day long

I worked at a doggy daycare and my boss had like 50 bajillion macaws. They were hell, I just want to work with some cute dogs. Nope I’d have to mop the floor in the morning in the front room where the macaws were. Morning was their free roaming time so I got macaws that don’t like me biting my mop, trying to bite me, succeeding in biting me. Every day lol, I’d pet them and be nice but they have bolt cutters on their faces. Everytime she’d walk outside they would scream top of their lungs. 5 macaws all trying to out scream the other it was literally ear piercing from the other room. I’ve owned small parrots and they are chill but just thinking about macaws make my ears ring. My boss. Left them at the shop and had a house separate and I don’t blame her at all

This is how all pet birds should live. Being able to fly free outside everyday and having a warm spacious home indoors with great food, companionship and no cage
@brianvalenti1207 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. One of my macaws is a good boy but real dumb. He can handle 1 new thing at a time and only if he gets a couple of stressful weeks to figure it out. His food dish broke and the replacement looked slightly different and that wasn't ok. I hand fed him for awhile because he might have starved to death before accepting the change even though I put all his favorite food and treats in it as a bribe. The outside world is not for him and he's fine with that.
@cindyf5521 Жыл бұрын
@@brianvalenti1207I'd say your boy is very smart indeed. Being fearful is what kept them (and in fact humans) safe. In the wild he would have learned from his parents what was safe and then through careful exploration and experience of his own later in life. I thought my bird was dumb for being scared of the kettle every time he bit me while I was filling it up. But then I learned that the size of this giant shiny reflective thing coming at him while he was sitting on my arm terrified him so he naturally struck at the closest thing - my arm. So the only dummy here was me for not understanding I'm making him live in my foreign (to him) environment and expecting him to react as if it's not alien at all. My bottom line is we don't give animals the credit they're due and it'd be nice if we tried to see the world through their eyes. After all, Mickey and Mia didn't learn to free fly and return overnight 😉
