I was in the same boat and went with the pro. I compared both screens at an Apple store and felt the pro was brighter/smoother in SDR and definitely better for HDR. Also wanted 16mb ram/512mb storage and the price difference was only $100. For that money you get a better screen, more ports, and fan for cooling chip. Have been going back and forth between the 15" air and the 14" pro, my biggest concern is the heat, the 14" having a fan vs the conductive cooling of the air is the 1 thing that I worry about, I do a lit of parametric modeling (free cad) for 3d printing and cad work but I think you have answered the performance questions around that so its just the heat, and perhaps the ruggedness of the air vs the pro.

Music production is not as demanding as video production, which is I proved and favoured in the M3 over the previous 2 generations. You should be fine with 16g, and the air will be preferable as no fans mean no noise. But you'll need a thunderbolt dock, as you'll probably also need to link a sound interface. And some external SSD disks, which make more sense than going above 512gb of Ram. You may find good deals on the m2 variants, which are better for sound production anyway.

8gb of RAM is not enough, my M1 air doesn't feel smooth when I use it. I'm not a heavy user, I mostly use it for browsing and it feels like some sort of elephant straining to fit in the laptop. I mean, if you're an experienced laptop/pc user you can say in no time that this piece of gear feels slow. A browser on my 5 years old 400$ PC with 16gb of RAM feels like a breathe of air in comparison with Macbook M1. If you want to buy a macbook for a minimal price, the best choise is to find an older M1 version for 600-700$, but not a 1000$ M3! If you really want to have the latest thing, wait a bit and buy a version with at least 16gb of RAM when you'll have a bit more money or wait for a sale.

I'm slowly drifting out of software development as I approach the age of 40. Looking at grabbing a Macbook Air M3 13 inch for writing / screenwriting and light video editing. I'm a little concerned that I might need to get a Mac Mini or Mac Studio with more GPU cores eventually for video editing. I tried a Surface Pro 9 for awhile, but it doesn't feel like the right platform to write on. It's not a bad device, but I don't love the keyboard and I need a little more room. I appreciate that the Air can be used with two monitors now. That's pretty huge. I'm hoping to work on a short film on my Macbook Air. Thinking I might need to grab an external drive (only got the 512GB), but hoping to capture my footage on my iPhone 15 Pro.

The ability to use more external displays is a huge plus...I wish my M2 Air could get that feature with a software update as it seems like it is more of a software limitation. I won't be upgrading anytime soon, so that would make me far more satisfied with my M2 macbook.

Nice video thank you! I'm in the market for a new mac (my first one) and I cant decide between the 16gb ram Air or the 8gb pro...both m3. I'm gonna use it for Figma mostly and light browsing. What is your suggestion?

Great video. Debating between this and pretty much same spec macbook pro m3. How does this aire hook up to another screen without hdmi port, and can a wireless mouse be connected without having to plug anything in (reciever)? Thanks

THE Review that I was looking for. Thanks! Just a banal question, for the blender renders, what if I opt for a 16 GB RAM Air and compare its swiftness with M3 Pro one? Will the Air be better. Just trying to work out which one suits me best. I certainly wouldn't want a 100° hot device on my lap.

My question. What is the issue of scratches or scrapes from connectors etc? Does the black paint scratch and come off and you can see the silver underneath?
@KyleErickson8 ай бұрын
no, over time you might get some wear there, just a faint ring around the sharp edge, but that's all from what I've seen

How to live with 512gb SSD in 2024? I have about 500gb of footage from my 3 week vacation (osmo pocket 3). How do I edit it on the 512gb laptop? I live in Cyprus and there's no custom options and no delivery from Apple. 512gb version is the maximum I can get 😢😢😢

Three of my sons and I have 16" or 14" Pro models (M1 & M2 Pros). We just bought this exact machine for my wife and she loves it. For what she is doing, probably the most demanding being photo editing from time to time, it's almost overkill but should last her for many years to come. While I just saw your video after purchase many of your points are the exact same reasons we went with this one! Excellent points!

I was having a hard time choosing between the M3 MacBook Air and the M3 MacBook Pro, specs are identical. In the end I went with the MacBook Pro, it's my fourth. Why the Pro? Better battery life, better screen, better sound, 2 fans for the times that it does run hot and I've gotten tired of having a dongle to connect anything lately, so the SDXC car slot is great, as is the HDMI port.

Pro vs. Non-Pro? In the old days the 13 inch Non-Pro's used to be a poor relation to the 13 Pro, specifically the build quality+magsafe+speakers made the Pro a must have. These days the upgrades the Air has had plus the bulk of the Pro versus these slim, fan-less M3 air's makes you take stock. Apart from the performance tiering (which boils down to what you want to use the laptop for) it seems to be down to whether you want 120hz or not. I switch between 120hz and 60hz all the time and I have concluded that its not a deal breaker for me on a 13 inch model.
