Good job! It is really strange that there is not more content like this. The Dell XPS lineup is supposed to challenge Apple's Macbook Pro. Do you plan to release some content where you compare the Dell XPS 9710 with the Macbook Pro M1 Max? If "yes" when can we expect the comparison? Keep up the good work.

Great comparison. I still can’t believe Dell hasn’t figured out how to implement a good webcam and a reliable trackpad on their premium laptops. For the latter, they should just copy Apple’s design and call it a day. Being able to upgrade the RAM on the XPS is an enormous advantage though.

Yeah the 9510 is a beautiful, premium windows laptop. if you're lucky enough to get one that has no faulty hardware. Mine unfortunately had ridiculous battery drain soon as I unplugged the charger from any usb-c port. I'm talking a crazy idle 20W drain (normally should be 3/4W on idle) and 60° idle temps on CPU/GPU. Basically the system process went rogue due to dxgmms2.sys, which kept the CPU running and draining battery - until I plugged the charger again. This led to approx. 3h battery life on idle, which is unacceptable on a €2.5k machine. Nothing fixed it, spent 3 days trying multiple fresh installs of win10 or win 11, battery tests, different drivers and windows updates. Most definitely a hardware issue with either ports or the charger itself. Ended up returning it and getting a 16" MBP with M1 pro and 32gb ram. Currently typing from a 9560, my first and last XPS thanks to their terrible QC.

Wow that sounds terrible! I have to be honest, I have just had a xps9710 through the door that is also running much hotter than expected! I have just repasted it (fortunately it was very easy) and now have great temps but I shouldn’t have had to do it!

I had suffered the same issue before, but finally I found out that's the Corsir driver keeping running in background draining the power out, after uninstalling it came back to the normal 3/4w idle consumption. You may try to find which is the app killing the power too.

@@shengzizhao4456 yeah I read about that but I didn’t have the corsair software installed, tracked it down to the nvidia card being always on after unplugging. Drivers were ok, and couldn’t solve it in any way. Got an unusable lemon and returned it asap.

Thank you so much for producing this comparison video. I just returned an M1 MacBook Air that I absolutely loved...and I got on sale. However, the MacBook probably should have been purchased with 16 GB of RAM instead of the base. IF you can use the M1 Macs they truly are exceptional. However, when returning the M1 I did stop by the Dell XPS 15 and was considering picking it up tomorrow, or the 14-inch M1 MBP. Your video and comparison were so good that I'm going with the Dell XPS 15...now fingers crossed I get a good trackpad. They really are surprisingly similar and for me the costs, upgradability, and compatibility make the Dell the winner at this time. Cheers.

I would see them in person. Honestly I think the 14 is quite big (Closer to a 15)......If you have to be on your laptop all the time mobile then maybe you want to consider a 16 if u absolutely need the real estate. Personally I find 4.5 pounds to be excessive in weight for a laptop. If you work mostly at home its a no brainer to invest the extra 3-400 bucks into a 27 inch external monitor.

Issue now for Macs is the RAM is integrated into the APU. This is enables its memory bandwidth to be so fast! External replaceable RAM would sacrifice this advantage. The SSD on the other hand, there doesn't seem to be any advantage other than thin-at-all-costs.

Apple is one of the companies leading the charge against right to repair, why? Because the can control the prices. Why let someone fix the products they buy for cheap when they can charge an absurd amount? It's just purely business. They're not the only one, most are doing it, but apple is the heaviest hand

Only buy, if you need it. Otherwise the best notebook is the one you already have. If you need one, take into consideration the carbon emissions and the winner is the MacBook Pro. 271 kgCO2e for MacBook Pro 14 2021. 431 kgCO2e for XPS 9510. That is 160 kgCO2e less for the MacBook and equals about 5 squarefeet of Arctic summer sea ice lost. Sidenote: Researcher found that there is a linear relation between CO2 emissions and loss of Arctic ice. „,For each tonne of carbon dioxide that a person emits anywhere on this planet, 3m2 (± 0.1m2) of Arctic summer sea ice disappears.“

I love my 9510 overall, but I have to wonder WTF Dell was thinking with their implementation of the trackpad (better than most Windows systems but they could do so much better on their flagship), the case design that causes the whistling sound when the system is not flat and the fans ramp, and the use of an OLED that can cause so many users headaches/eyestrain due to how poorly they implemented PWM (which, when done right, works fine for almost everyone). The XPS in on the verge of greatness, but they really missed the mark on a few key areas. Dell absolutely could have avoided those pitfalls and it's kind of like how Apple dropped the ball with their 5500M GPU power draw on external displays on the 16-inch MacBook Pro of the previous generation. These are pretty significant oversights on laptops that can cost 10 times that of an entry level laptop.

Hi David, I live in the UK. I have been on eBay in the hope folk will want to sell their existing M1 MacBook Pro 13” for the new 14” MacBook Pro but in all honesty, purchasing a MacBook is an expensive option for most laptop buyers and the 14” does carry a hefty entry point price, so I have found most owners are happy to keep their existing 13” M1. The price differential between used and new is minimal - hence my decision to purchase a new MacBook and keep it for the next 3 - 4 years. I’m switching from Thinkpad X1 because the MacBook Pro or Air have amazing battery life AND no unplugged performance drop, not to mention an amazing M1 system on a chip. The thing about the macs, is that it isn’t about “beating” intel in raw performance…it’s about heat and fan noise. I don’t care if the Dell crushes the mac performance wise if it gets uncomfortably hot to the touch and throttles too much and the fans are too loud, I’d much rather have “good enough” performance on the mac. And I hate saying that, but it is what makes it hard to not get a mac, because you know that you will have a good screen good enough keyboard, and not have a fan blasting or loads of throttling. That being said, I wish you had shown in more numerical detail the cost of the excellent performance on the Dell in terms of heat and noise and power draw, because despite the “impressive” figures from the intel machines, it begs the question, “at what cost?” in terms of power usage.

I’m not sure Apple has miniaturized the FaceID tech to put it in the slimmer bezel just yet. However, let’s say they did, how will they implement it? Unlocking is easy, sure. Though, how about payments? For phones and tablets, when you purchase something, FaceID always require a double click of the power button for a physical action as a confirmation. Though, on the laptop, that’s where the fingerprint sensor is, so you just might as well use that to begin with. So if they add FaceID, let’s say it’s 100$ more expensive, and that’s being generous, it just unlocks your device, anything else would just have you use the fingerprint sensor anyway to have a physical action for confirmation. I do think it’s worth the probably 150$ - 200$ up charge for FaceID, but it does have a lot less value on a laptop, so you are paying a premium for convenience. However, I do prefer it.

I would go for 16. I had the Base 14 and returned it for the 16. This is the first laptop I've owned (and you can ask my wife how many laptops I have gone through) where I want to use the laptop's screen for actual work and not just feel like the screen is something you put up with for portability. The 14 is just too cramped though to be a portable productive workstation IMO and still felt compelled to plug it into my desktop monitor. The 16 inch is spacious enough and is the best display I've used, despite the drawback he mentions of slow pixel response. Rumor is Apple will bring OLED in 2025 - which I assume will be OLED 120Hz with 1000nits brightness which would be the only thing I can see beating this Mini-LED. I also have a 15" portable OLED (kickstarter campaign) and this MINI-LED is better in many ways (except for pixel response time) - HDR content knocks my socks off, so I just had to go for the 16"!

If you plan to purely edit on the laptop screen then the 16" is a good choice with great real estate. It is pretty large though and much bigger than the XPS (I had planned to compare the xps 9510 with the 16 at first but as it was so much bigger I decided to compare the 16 with the XPS 9710 17" which will be coming soon). I personally chose the 14" as I find it a much more comfortable size to carry, use on my lap and on the go but I also plug into an external display when serious editing in the office. Hope this helps a little as it is a really hard question and one I have been back and forth on for years

Why do people see touch screens ON A LAPTOP as an advantage? Why would i like to wipe fingerprints off my screen every day... Clear win for the macbook pro imo: better screen, much better battery, more robust build, more ports, 120hz, touchpad gestures on mac are way better then windows, better speakers, better webcam, lighter, lower temps, no throttling, no noisy fans, full performance on battery ... and if you use the "full" M1PRO 10c/16gpu or M1MAX 10c/32gpu it destroys the xps in performance. Even the base 8c/14gpu is already on par with the dell. So I don't know why someone would buy the dell unless the realy NEED windows or play a lot of games. I agree some real competition here, but I think you are underselling some of the MBP tech here. I wouldn't vote the pro-motion as a pure gimmick - yes pixel response is not gaming caliber, but it is still a pleasure to use for desktop, scrolling, application switching - and even gaming feels measurably smoother. For non-competitive or non-FPS promotion is still a huge lift. The speakers on the MBP are ridiculously better than the XPS15 - because it actually has low-end presence. Mini-LED HDR brightness (and outdoors the MBP screen goes brighter than 500nits, it just is manually limited indoors) is eye searing in HDR movies and content, even watching my iPhone 13 pro videos on this is amazing. So for true HDR or Dolby Vision work, pros are going to be very happy. Finally, fan noise and battery life are just leagues better, especially on the base model 16 where fans are so quiet. But you are right, if you want to have a wide diversity of gaming on the go, MBP is a complete loser here. But I only need a few strategy games to feel content there.
@MashITTech
@MashITTech 2 жыл бұрын
You make some good points Eric, and yes the fan noise, heat and battery are major selling points as is the display. I guess after the m1 release last year and the way apple and other channel (max tech as an example) make this m1 pro seem like the holy grail I expected it to perform a lot better than the XPS in real world use so I was very surprised that the XPS held its own. (though obviously not in battery or fan noise) Also, I didn't realise it would go beyond 500nits outdoors! I have been trying to force it above 500nit with no luck so thanks for that advice 👍

@@MashITTech You guys are the pros, but I've seen some other videos confirming that the display can go above 500nits, but you have to activate it with extremely bright light in the sensor - you can't manually toggle it. I do agree that some of the breathless reporting is a bit over the top. I picked up an XPS13 a few months with a basic Iris Xe i5 in it - and in many ways it can be more performant in gaming than this $2600 MacBook Pro 16 - simply by nature of Windows gaming legacy and optimization. Battery life on the XPS13 is great, and and you get windows hello and touchscreen capabilities. SO yeah, it is VERY fair to compare and the XPS15 and 17 are great and certainly more portable. I just can't get over this Mini LED display though - but I also don't own a high end large screen TV so it's pretty amazing.

I must admit, I went into the comparison thinking it would be an easy win for the MacBook and I think I also would choose the XPS over the MBP14. I am more of a 17" laptop user personally so I am looking forward to comparing the XPS 9710 with the MBP 16

@@MashITTech Me too with 17"...I feel the Asus I just got (arrived today unexpectedly), the S17 11900h/3080/32gb/3TB/4K 120 blows the 16" macbook away. I couldn't care less if the macbook has slightly higher cpu performance LOL (and even the 16" hits 95 under load.. the asus hit 80 only!)

But here is the thing, we know premiere pro(PP) is better but is expensive. Final cut is expensive too but once you buy it is your forever while pp you have to pay over 200 every year which is a ton of money.

Dell XPS 9510 using Intel Processor. Well, that means I able to run some Programs and maybe using another Operating System on it with ease Maybe 14" MacBook Pro isn't suit for me because there's nothing like what I mentioned 👆 (My thought about Dell XPS 9510)

for me personally, I would still rather buy a gaming laptop with decent high refresh panel and plenty of ports but I Can see the attraction to these slim productivity machines

It would totally depend on your use case. If pure gaming I would probably get an X17, if work and gaming probably a legion 7

Had both and the Dell battery life is terrible and the fan turns on consistently for just having chrome tabs open. Sent the Dell XPS 9510 back and kept the MacBook pro 14. Dell customer service is absolutely trash as well!

Agreed but I only compared them as they cost almost the same. The m1 max is a lot more expensive (at least it is in the U.K.) I do have a 10core 16gpu MacBook Pro 16 and will compare that to the xps 9710 soon

Nice video! One thing I can't understand is taking away so many useful ports laptops. Why do a handful 13-15 inch laptops not have a single USB A port or even HDMI... So annoying to have dongles when plenty of laptops in the same size category can fit so many more ports!
@MashITTech

I totally agree and it is something I have been moaning about since Apple released the 2016 MacBooks. This years Macs is a step in the right direction but still not good enough for me as I use USB3 ports so regularly still and hate relying on dongles

I am thinking that 99.9% of us would not want to lose a USB-C for the sake of having a USB-A as the former can be a bus for almost any IO whereas the USB-A is restricted. I do not use USB-A ports anymore and any device with that connector I permanently attach an adapter for USB-C so it is moot. If your work means attaching various IO from customers then you will come prepared with all the possibilities covered.

@@andyH_England I never said to take away the USB C. I just think we shouldn't be making everything only USB C. My 15 inch laptop has 3 USB A, 1 USB C with display port out, 1 USB C thunderbolt, HDMI, mini dp, full SD card slot, Ethernet port. I also think you're the minority if you never use any other ports but USB C and enjoy using dongles lol.
@jsebrech

The USB A port is the only thing that I really feel is lacking on my M1 macbook air. In theory I can just replace all the cables with USB C variants, in practice I need to pull out a dongle all the time because I have something USB A to plug in. Some cases third parties could solve (looking at logitech here, and their lack of a USB C receiver), but other cases I expect to run into for years to come. The HDMI and SD ports I need so rarely that for those cases the dongle lifestyle is fine with me, although I understand why Apple would prioritize those over USB A given who the new MBP's are targeted at.

You are right and I am really surprised it wasn’t there for safari but I am sure this is something Apple will soon resolve. But even in games where promotion is working although smoother than 60hz it is nowhere near as smooth as a gaming panel

Only downside about the MacBook Pro is the MacOS system. Apple would be my choice if careers, such as accounting, computer science, engineering were more apple friendly. I’m an accounting professional and 95% of all software requires windows.

I didn’t say MacBook wasn’t good for college students I said it’s not good for accounting professionals. You can use a MacBook while in school while studying accounting because you don’t use special software in school, but you should learn to use windows if you plan on becoming an accountant of some sort.
