It seems like maybe we are at more of a plateau for smartphones, rather than a peak. There are a few companies doing some bleeding edge tech that are moving the needle forward a little, but most of the major brands are playing it super safe and not making any leaps and bounds forward anymore.

Companies can not make something so wacky that it takes the user convenience away like a car company turning there backs on 4 wheel cars to only 3 wheels. All because it’s different. That’s exactly why foldable phones aren’t mainstream yet.

@r2l100 Peak phone is coming (but not quite yet). Battery tech will be the big focus ones cameras/chips/screens have hit the wall as people will want phones that last days instead of hours between charges. I'd argue 10-15 years down the line will be watch/glasses combo where instead of a phone in your hand it'll me in front of your eyes then the watch controls any functions needed... I can't see any other way they will improve personal tech.

IMO, while smartphones themselves haven’t really reached the “peak” where they stop seeing improvements, I think that user experience has or, at least, will reach that plateau first. It’s reached a point that people are pretty much satisfied with what is currently available and aren’t actively hyped about rumored improvements since it doesn’t really affect the overall phone experience that much. At least, this is a thought about conventional smartphones (the brick ones). Once the folding ones start to become mainstream, it might allow for more creative directions that are sure to cause hype

I agree with the thought process, most of my relatives who use Android and would buy a phone every year cause they can afford it chose to buy the Samsung s21 FE 5g over the brand-new s22 simply saying that it's more or less the same so why to spend the extra money and the iPhone side of the family haven't upgraded their iphone since iphone12 one of them might this year go to the iPhone 13mini if the mini line up is taken out just to get the most powerful mini iphone available.

Outside of Apple, and maybe Samsung's Z series, I really can't see a reason to go with one company over others when everything looks the same and has the same specs. Unlike 10 years ago, I can't take a quick look at someone's phone and go "Oh, that's a Samsung" or whatever, now it's just "Oh, a phone". I hope I made some sense.

I think we're reaching a point where it's common sense that releasing a new phone every year just doesn't make sense anymore - and I think Apple is finally ready to admit that. We're not at peak smartphones in a long term, but short term? Maybe yes. Adding that up to the chip crises, maybe Apple will take this context to do what they do best: not new tech, but marketing. If they, for example, decide NOT to launch the basic iPhone, they'd have the perfect excuse for that: a new Apple, that values the environment, that cares about the planet, and so on. We know that in a capitalist world, scarcity (or at least the illusion thereof) is what builds value. So what would make the actual new iPhone more valuable? The lack of a new, but lower-tier one.

Having worked in semicon manufacturing, I will say that these "latest" product releases will have been in the works for atleast 2 or more years. Even that 2 years is pretty much a stretch as they would be working on more than 1 chip in parallel i.e. A15 may have just finished design stages while A14 just about to begin production (with A16 onwards already in the pipeline as a concept). Alongside the SoC, their other IC and PCB components will also be undergoing the same R&D, qualification, testing, mass production cycles e.g. new chip improvements/supplier for better battery management. Those 2 years may or may not yet even account for the production ramp up. They seem to peak at around 6 months before the holidays to meet demand. With that fact in mind, due credit really should be given to these designers and engineers in general (not just Apple). They literally have to innovate and think years ahead in order to one up their own (or competition).

It's also the fact that for all of that power, you still really can't do a lot with it on a phone or even a tablet. I do find it fascinating that my Pixel 6 Pro crushes my Nintendo Switch in raw CPU and GPU horsepower and in RAM throughput and capacity etc. yet the switch has an almost incomprehensible number of brilliant games that make the absolute most of the hardware possible, and my Pixel (or any current high end phone be it Android or iOS) has comparatively awful games, with the graphically impressive ones coming in far, far fewer numbers and quality. It's equally impressive AND frustrating since, if the switch had the specs of my Pixel 6 Pro, it would run games at 3x the resolution and twice the framerate even without any active cooling and even more impressive numbers with active cooling like the switch has; and that's being conservative. I understand the reason why this is the case, such as not being able to sell the switch at £250-350 with those kinds of specs and also the nature of an exclusively gaming focused platform vs a general productivity platform, with gaming slapped on the side, no standard physical controls and with there being far less guarantee for developers to sell games in the kinds of numbers they will on something like a switch due to its massive gaming focused user base. Still though, it doesn't make it any less frustrating. (Edit) I will say I'm optimistic for the future of gaming specifically on powerful phones with the introduction of things like windows 10-11 being able to run on certain ARM devices and emulate 32-64bit natively X86 based programs and games like we've seen on the Ayn Odin Pro, which is a switch like handheld console with an actively cooled, overclocked Snapdragon 845 that is able to have windows 11 installed on it and can even run some older X86 games like Skyrim fairly well, even under emulation. The 845 is an old ARM chip now and although it is merely coincidence that there is windows support for this chip as Microsoft used a similar chip in one of their own devices and it had to be unofficially modified to run on the device, the fact that it even works at all on a chip that is very weak compared to the newest smartphone chips, does get me excited for the future! Or... It'll just tease us about what's possible and it'll never happen due to giant tech companies and their never ending bureaucracy.

Since Apple started making "Max" versions of their iPhones it has always been a "Pro Max". If you wanted the larger screen you had to get the Pro whether you needed the features or not. But, if the rumors are true, this year there will be a 14 Max (without the Pro features and Pro cost). So what if the 14 Max takes the expected price slot of the 14 this year and the 14 is cheaper? This feels more likely to me than Apple swapping a number but keeping essentially the same specs.

A 14 Max would give a broader audience a chance to get a bigger iPhone, with a super solid battery life. In my country the 13 Pro starts at €1150 and the 13 Pro Max at €1250 for 128gb one, meanwhile the regular 13 is €850 so let’s assume 14 Max will be €999 (because of course apple will hike up the price), that would mean easier access to the bigger model. And I see a ton of especially younger people get the 13 Pro Max because of the screen size, people like me that find it too big seem to be the minority. Anyhow 14 and 14 Max will probably skip on 120hz, I expect Apple to bring that to the regular models in 2023.

His point about the new chips giving "years of headroom" is spot on. I would argue it started well before the A14; I have a lot of friends still happy with the performance of their iPhone XR with the A12 chip. I could see people squeezing 8 years or more out of a phone these days.

I'm still using an iPhone XS and I see 0 performance issues with it in my day-to-day life. I haven't seen a need to upgrade yet as there are no apps that run noticeably slow on this phone. Realistically you can get five years out of a phone if you take care of it and replace the battery, just like how 95% of users can get 5-7 years out of a mac with maintenance. I had to replace my 2015 MacBook pro battery last year because it had a defect, but overall it's still working fine and is a perfectly good computer. My only reason to upgrade iPhones at this point is for better battery life.

From an innovation standpoint , smartphones are definitely starting to reach their peak. There really isn’t that many breakthroughs anymore and all that’s going on is marginal improvements over existing features. As someone who's been into apple products for most of my life, I RARELY upgrade phones. I used a hand-me-down 5S from 2016-2018, only upgrading because of the major innovation (strong word, i know - but face ID fr had me shocked) of the iPhone X. Since then, I upgraded one more time in 2020 to an 11, only due to me unfortunately obliterating my X while on a skateboard... Which brings me to today. I love my 11, couldn't point out a fault in it, there's no major features I feel as though I'm missing out on - believe it on not apple, a big ass magnet isn't the selling point you really think it is. But I desperately need more storage, 64GB does not get you far anymore. I'm going to a concert in November and I really want good photos and videos, do I go for the fancy new 14 pro? I have a 256gb phone and still run out of space so I use 2TB of iCloud storage … and all the images are available on my computer as well It automatically backs up photos while keeping low res copies on the phone. And you don’t even have to keep the low res copies if you don’t want those on your phone …. But then when you need one of the photos it will download right away 🤔 Also on the side of upgrading. I would say wait till it releases and see just how much is different. But if you need more space then just upgrade and get the highest storage you can afford on the 13 or 14 maybe 🤷🏼‍♂️

Samsung, being one of the main companies that I've seen lately, and a few others have been the main ones trying out incredible new innovations like the Fold and although it hasn't actually performed amazingly better than others, it's still something new that brings more curiousity and interest to the future of smartphones unlike iphones.

Nay, we don't buy iPhones for some groundbreaking innovation. It has always been the OS. How smooth it is to connect to your iPad, Mac & other devices. The reliability factor is so far ahead. And for Samsung, yes I love the S22+ Ultra, but the UI still sucks. It will get slow after a few years just like all the Android phones. Have been using the iPhone XR for 3 years now and still it has the same speed. No lag whatsoever. Have we hit the peak? Maybe. But Android is even more stupid to come up with innovations with a bad software experience. My 1.5-year-old nephew was able to use my iPhone with ease because it is so intuitive. ive only had 2 iphones so far: a 6s plus in 2017 and then upgraded to 11 pro max in 2020. the change for me was massive, since id basically hopped forward 5 (4 since they skipped the 9) generations after owning my first phone for 3 years. the change btw 6 and 7 wasnt that big, i actually skipped 7 cuz i wanted real hole button lolol. then 8 came out and it was the exact same as 7, the real convo starter was the X. i rmr wanting the XS max before it got discontinued. thats why i ended up w the 11 pro max. me vs the big phones but yh. the jump from my rotted 6s plus w tiny storage and terrible battery to the 11 pro max was huge for me, w the different screen shape and res being v noticeable, the build feeling heavier, the cameras going crazy, etc. i think apple and smartphones in general can continue to release incremental upgrades yearly and there will always be people that swap from last year’s phone to that year’s, or people like me that upgrade from (relatively) ancient versions to the latest model.

The cameras are consistently getting better. Some non-tech person might think we have already hit that but no not even close. Even if the megapixel theoretically hits infinity there's still the processor that can improve. This is why there will be differences in qualities in cameras even if they have the same megapixel and sensor size and are both taking "RAW" images. And we will probably see some sort of 3D recording on phones soon enough to accommodate VR content. And VR needs REALLY high resolution and framerate because the screen is on your face which lowers the effective resolution. Then there's the fact that it also needs to be wide and refresh fast enough to feel realistic.

Smartphones were exciting about ten years ago. But let's face it, every phone since the first iPhone has had incremental upgrades. Remember the first iPhone only had 2G. The second one had 3G. The next big change was the design of the iPhone 4 in 2010. The iPhone 5 in 2012 brought a bigger screen. The iPhone 6 was another design refresh. The next big change outside the yearly chip upgrades was the iPhone X which was a big design upgrade and came with FaceID. The iPhone 12 saw a move back to the design language of the iPhone 4 & 5. So really there has been mostly incremental change since the first iPhone!

I am currently using an iPhone 6. this iPhone has been with me for around 5 years, and it's currently very very slow, and I cannot install some applications onto it (like Outlook, I need it for university but I can't install it, so instead I just use chrome remote desktop and connect to my PC whenever I need to use outlook). It also lags out sometimes, when my mother calls me it hangs up by itself frequently, and the battery is almost dead, plus it's not worth changing right now, so I decided to work to get a new phone. My brother has an iPhone 7 and I have used it for a while, the difference in performance is so big. The iPhone 7 is still fast, at least a LOT faster than the 6. My issue is different tho, my issue is with this stupid economical crisis. I needed a new phone, so I have literally worked for 2 months so far this summer, and my total income from these 2 months is 256$ (specifically). I have worked 9 hours a day and 6 days a week, for 2 entire months, I went out with my friends like twice total these 2 months and haven't spent anything from my income, and I need a new phone but still can't do anything about it. Imagine working for so many hours and sweating so much and working so hard, just to buy a new phone because you need it...I can't even buy a used iPhone Xs with 256$... People will say I'm crying about it, and I won't deny. I'm 20 years old and my mental and physical health is at its worst. What a shameful country to live in. I don't need a job? I need a miracle!

Assuming battery prices drop a bit, they can save a bit more cash using the same battery cap while improving performance due to several other changes such as using their latest optimized and more efficient SoC vs previous, and new overall build/design.

Ofc there is plenty combinations more efficient but companies have invested so much in machines that manufacture with the current technology. If you want to change all the technology mix for a new one there must be super more efficient or more affordable. Therefore is more convenient to implement more efficient chips in terms of energy distribution than change the raw material of batteries
