A selection of songs drawn from the pages of "Prince - The 50 Essential Bootlegs" by Hamish Whitta, listing 50 bootlegs across a variety of tours from 1980 through to 2016. We have done our best to take a song (or two) from each recording mentioned, where possible, and present it over 4 discs into a smooth listening experience.
One of the biggest problems with such a project is that audio quality is all over the place, which makes it hard to enjoy in a mix. With sound quality ranging from soundboards to audience recordings in the 80s to the cavernous sounds of the 90s, we hope we have achieved a certain level of uniformity that should make it an enjoyable experience. Liberties have been taken with some edits and transitions for the mix.

Liner Notes:
We have chosen two songs from Prince’s most widely bootlegged show, Tokyo 1990, to introduce Disc 3. The sound quality of the Big Chick charity concert at Rupert’s four months earlier was deemed too rough for us to use here, but the two songs we have selected from Tokyo are entirely representative of the era. "The Question Of U" and "The Future" are both good snapshots of the two albums they have been drawn from (Graffiti Bridge and The Batman Soundtrack). Both lean towards the heavier side of Prince’s live performances, with strong drums propelling both, while Prince’s muscular vocals push strongly in the same direction.
We also have a double shot from Prince’s Diamonds and Pearls concert at Earls Court two years later, this time Thieves In The Temple and Insatiable representing that tour. “Thieves in The Temple” is an incendiary performance, and the cool balm of “Insatiable” is just what is required to bring us back to earth. The alluring guitar work of Levi Seacer Jnr is just the tonic we need after Prince’s furious work on the acoustic guitar through “Thieves in The Temple.” In the same vein, "7", taken from the following Act 1 tour is equally satisfying, with its rhythmic acoustic sound steadying the ship.

Never EVER thought I'd get to hear him sing a song he wrote for The Time!! This is a rare treat!! I'm hyped up, man!! I hope we get to hear him performing ALL the songs he wrote for The Time!! Let's Work is exciting too!! That concert must've been phenomenal!! And FINALLY a version of She's Always In My Hair that I LIKE!! This is unbelievable!! That bassline is dope as hell!! All the rhythmic variation is stellar too!! Then it just changes tempo altogether!! Incredible composition and phenomenal drumming on this!! What ELSE is in this group of songs?! Can't wait to find out!! Hey!! That was an actual vocal run he did at the end of that number!! I thought he frowned on that kind of thing!! Impressive again!! I'm surprised to hear that!! Haha!! I wonder if he incorporated that into his style over time or if it was something he just felt like doing once!! I gotta hear stuff he recorded after this point!! Maybe I'll find out!!

I'm proud of him for making When I Lay My Hands On U. It's a new style that sounds great still!! Especially the way he sings the song title then allows a little decrescendo!! Excellent, Prince!! More like this in the vault would be cool to hear one day!! Same goes for In A Large Room With No Light!! Fantastic!! Sounds almost like a Stevie Wonder cut over a Yellowjackets beat!! I feel like I'm being spoiled!! Oh, shit!! If he actually wrote that himself he deserved a HUGE pat on the back!! It would represent a GREAT deal of growth!!

Love the vocal delivery over the chord progression in The Love We Make!! That's just a fabulous song, I've got to say. Very well written!! And the perspective that love doesn't really exist seems valid sometimes. Due to his horrible childhood I can see how he'd arrive at that conclusion. It goes along with his message, "In this life, you're on your own!!" Of course he could mean that love just doesn't exist naturally and needs to be cultivated. That perspective is valid too. Either way, he's absolutely outdone himself again on this one. It's clearly the best recording in this video followed immediately by either She's Always In My Hair or The Question of U. Not sure which one comes in second yet. Still deciding. The idea of him forming a band of three women is inspiring, too by the way, I just don't know if they're featured on this recording. No wait. I just heard Insatiable again!! That might be the best recording in this video!! Right now I'm listening to The Question of U again and I think that might be better than The Love We Make as well!! We'll have to decide. Regardless of which recording is the best, I've concluded that this dude will be remembered as the most talented musician in history. Of all time, perhaps. Okay. I've decided The Question of U is the best recording in this video. Not only does it have lots of instruments doing amazing things, it has a great guitar solo as well as a clearly defined melodic theme that's easy to remember. Insatiable and The Love We Make both lack that. So there. It also features some incredible strings and a dope keyboard intro! About Breakdown, though. I've NEVER been more impressed by his falsetto than in that song!! How could he reach such high notes and retain all that control? Incredible singing right there, man. Too bad that was the last cut!! Shit!! smh I've changed my mind for the last time. The Love We Make is tied with The Question of U and Insatiable because of subject matter, a live drummer and female background vocalists. Besides, it has emotion the others lack. That's my final decision. A three way tie. And as far as, "All my friends call me 'Prince'..." He knew good and well he didn't have any friends!! He had business associates!! Andre Symone was the last person he probably considered a 'friend'!! He didn't trust anyone else enough to become friends!! Outside of Larry Graham, maybe. And Chaka Khan. But that's not enough to say 'all my friends' as if it's several mufuckas!

I don't have an instrument with me so this might not be right, but it sounds like the A section of The Question of U goes back and forth between I and IV before going up a fourth then going back and forth between I and IV again, then back down a fourth to repeat. The B section is too complex for me to decipher yet. This could be completely wrong, mind you!! Sure wish I had a piano nearby!! That would solve the whole problem. There may be a C section that's even MORE advanced that I haven't figured out yet. Not sure. Would appreciate help from anyone who has a better understanding of chord progressions. This is fascinating!! Not that I plan to PLAY it ever. I'm just curious. Imagine if I understood the string arrangement!! I'd feel closer to the music!! I doubt the sheet music is available.

My man screwed up the lyrics on Little Red Corvette!! Oops!! Nice play off though. Raspberry Beret and Pink Cashmere I'm familiar with and have always liked, so no comment on them. Shhh, on the other hand, hasn't gotten as much play, but it's not bad quality as far as what he's capable of. I'm Yours and I Like It There don't stand out in terms of compositions. Could've done without them except for the solos. Those are always good.

The Question of U and Insatiable are the kind of quality songs I appreciate from Prince. Not the tired, uninteresting stuff like The Future. We all know he can do sooo much more than that. C'mon, man. Thieves In The Temple is much better and a perfect way to describe MAGA Cult members across America, even though I'm not even religious. Peach is an impressive display of his versatility, but Days of Wild, Gold and The Undertaker are the average pieces of crap he spends too much time doing. smh Let's see what else is here. Okay, can't blame Are You Gonna Go My Way on Prince since he had nothing to do with it. That'll Work was another tired jam session, but The Everlasting Now was a fun one!! I can dig it!!
