Prince - The 50 Essential Bootlegs Listening Companion Part 1
A selection of songs drawn from the pages of "Prince - The 50 Essential Bootlegs" by Hamish Whitta, listing 50 bootlegs across a variety of tours from 1980 through to 2016. We have done our best to take a song (or two) from each recording mentioned, where possible, and present it over 4 discs into a smooth listening experience.
One of the biggest problems with such a project is that audio quality is all over the place, which makes it hard to enjoy in a mix. With sound quality ranging from soundboards to audience recordings in the 80s to the cavernous sounds of the 90s, we hope we have achieved a certain level of uniformity that should make it an enjoyable experience. Liberties have been taken with some edits and transitions for the mix.
Enjoy
Mace, Delirium and Hamish

Liner Notes:
Disc 1 opens with a young Prince playing on the Rick James Tour. Taken from his show at the Omni, Atlanta, we have his first single "Soft And Wet", followed by "I Feel For You". It was March 1980 and all ready Prince had plugged directly into the sound of Pop music from which he would later leap into a much wider world of sounds and genres. Both sound vital and are the perfect introduction to Prince. The other side of Prince is revealed through his Dirty Mind tour, the source of "Do It All Night", "Sister", and "Gotta Stop (Messin’ About)". This is Prince full of piss and vinegar, his naked ambition to get noticed by any means necessary fully revealed. The pop is still there, but it is a thin veneer, and an edgier, punkier, sound is beginning to emerge. One can feel the pure pop being shaken loose as the songs, and Prince, accelerate towards the future. This acceleration and speed carry forward for the next battery of songs drawn from the Controversy tour. "Private Joy", "Dirty Mind" and "Annie Christian" are a murderers row of Prince sonic experiments. The high-speed pop of “Private Joy,” the pulsating teenage sexuality of “Dirty Mind” and the dark glisten of “Annie Christian” gives us a fair idea of where Prince was at that time, the future was wide open for what could come next.
What did come next was Prince’s breakthrough album 1999, and from that album comes "All The Critics Love You In New York", this particular concert recording coming several months before the release of the album.

This gave me the chills, like hearing Prince for the 1st time. I am 55 and have listened and saw Prince 4 times, once with my wife. I would like to share a story. I had many kitchen dances with my daughter to Prince as she was a child. As she grew up and owned her own music, i would be getting dinner together, playing Prince, as per usual, my wife and daughter would pop in and say, not feckin Prince again, but still had a bit of a shuffle. For our daughter's 21st birthday, coming back from studying abroad; as a jokey part of her presents, i got an original version of Purple Rain on Vinyl -she has her own decks at home and loves the ol vinyl like- she unwrapped it and held it with a reverance, brings tears to my eyes sharing this. She held it, looked at me and said, this is a perfect present. We went upstairs and she gently placed it on her turntable and sat. My wife after a couple of tracks said, i am off and we fell about laughing. So, thanks for this. This will give me another 30 years of annoying the wife, although, she always gave me a gentle kiss on my cheek. And kitchen dances with my daughter, when she visits. So thank you for sharing this.

Thank you for putting out the listening companion. Amazing. I have to ask if you have the complete Rupert’s charity event for Big Chick for the Nude Tour rehearsal? I was there and Prince put the mic in front of me for The Future and shook my hand. It was an amazing night. I was front row with his stepsister, the Time, The Family, etc. Incredible. If you have the video or sound from The Future opening from that show it would mean the world to me. Thank you.

The New Orleans show, very recommended if you can get a copy of the whole thing. (my cassette had a lot of wow and flutter ). Also, the Aug 3 1983 performance was the only time outside of rehearsals that he performed the unreleased 2nd verse to Computer Blue. That song really needed it to be on the album.

This version of Sometimes It Snows In April needed more rehearsal. That chorus wasn't as clean as it could've been. The most challenging line in the whole piece starts off with, "Sometimes I feel..." and that last word needs to be clear since the harmony changes for a second.

OMG, this is so amazing. Thank you so much for putting it together. I'm sure it was soooo hard ( that's what she said) getting all the different audio quality to jive as you mention in your notes. Even though you mention it, that doesn't really convey all the hours and days, not to mention equipment/ software that must have gone into that. Plus the time to listen to so many shows, not like that part wasn't enjoyable, im sure. Love and appreciate your liner notes too. One comment I have about the actual music, as I mentioned in another bootleg s comments is, I am blown away by Dez Dickerson's playing and is that Jesse on "I feel for you"???? I thought heard Prince call him out by name. Lol, I think Dez did have a couple of cocktails before his solo in "All the Critics.....", Lol, but that's ok... I've been there myself quite a bit back in the day. I've been listening without skipping around, I'm at "computer blue", using my sweet JBL headphones and I have to say you have done an outstanding job smoothing out the differences in audio quality, it's all meshing really nicely. Omg!!! (If I keep editing this as I listen along it's going to be a very long comment...lol) this arrangement of "erotic city" is Soo freakin cool!! Damn! I love it when Prince plays that clean-toned funk on his giitar!!

Was the entire NPG Jehovah's Witnesses? Cause at one point Prince told Morris Day he couldn't feel comfortable collaborating with him unless they could 'pray' together. Making him converting to Prince's religion a requirement to work with him!! That's crazy!! There should be a separation of faith and business just like church and state!! Of course, Morris walked.

The beat to The Ballad of Dorothy Parker sounds like the Yellowjackets!! Was he a fan? lol Incredible drumming!! If that's still Bobby Z, I take my hat off to that dude!! I'm impressed!! Damn. And Adore is another one of Prince's masterpieces. No one else can make a ballad as slick and smooth as that. From the lyrics to the singing to the bridge. Right after the laid back intro it goes directly into the chorus then to the first verse!! Simply marvelous. It even has a bit of humour in the middle. Very cool song. He couldn't have made this when he put together his debut album. No way!! His whole sound and approach had to develop. What Did I Do, The Cross, People Without, Lovesexy and Anna Stesia are all garbage though, sadly enough. We still heard some good ones!!

Another Lonely Christmas is too much like Purple Rain to have been written and performed. It should have just been put in the vault. Surprised, too, cuz he never repeats himself like that!! Hmph.
