He had a good heart and was a kind, gentle, caring man. Yes, one could push him to anger but it took some doing and he tolerated far more than he probably should have. We have never met anyone who had an unkind thing to say about Nelson Eddy; instead, he touched lives and helped people, sometimes even anonymously.

I’ve watched this many times, I love it so much, but can anyone identify who young Freddie is talking about at 18:30 when he says someone was “out of town” the implication being that they would have asked him to sing, which amuses the audience hugely. Nelson’s face is priceless. I just cannot hear what the name is and it’s very annoying. Also I must congratulate Ted Paxson for his ability to accompany on the piano. It’s not an easy thing to do, but he watches his singers so carefully so that he doesn’t run ahead of them. It’s an art.

They didn't know what to do with Nelson on television. It was a transition time in his career. He was much happier singing live for audiences, which is what he did when he soon after began a nightclub career. He was a huge success there.

@maceddy3 жыл бұрын
He was going through a rough patch in his life; he and Jeanette were personally estranged and he was trying to reinvent a new career; films were done, radio was done, concerts lost audiences to television; it was a new world. He and other middle-aged stars tried to find a place for themselves during the early '50s. Nelson was one of the first to make it big in nightclubs.

Did you guys notice how our Nelson’s singing voice changed from when he was singing “Wish You Were Here” and “Bonndabar”? Something’s really getting under our Nelson’s skin. But, what is that, do you suppose that is?

He and Jeanette were at that time personally separated. Opening the show with his Lake Tahoe painting behind him was one of his creative ways to reach out to her.

Interesting relic of early television. Not that familiar with NE's career but I've known of him for many years, though I've heard few of his recordings & seen none of his movies with Jeanette McDonald, except for brief clips over the years. I like his relaxed style here, he does well in a sitcom setting. Reminds me somewhat of actor Dan Duryea. On the whole, the show's humor rather strained, the sidekick guy not too great either. Poor audio quality makes the duet number almost unbearable, so shrieky, high-pitched, & tinny, ouch! Still, though, fun to see NE in this ancient show.

I like Nelson Eddy, but this show seems so tired and generic for the era. Not good enough for him frankly.
@maceddy Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. They didn't know what to do with him in television. Later on it was suggested that he and Jeanette host variety/talk show together. That would have been wonderful, as would have been another movie. Jeanette suffered from a serious heart condition and was near death a few times during these years. When this show was filmed, Nelson and Jeanette were personally broken up and some of that innate sadness or "aloneness" one picks up is because of that. He was a different man when they were together. Watch him on the Bob Hope show on our channel when they were happy and you'll see a difference in his energy and enthusiasm.
