Great Video Sam. Another way to get the drills and boring bars on center - is to use an indicator on the chuck to drive it to x=0, A co-axial indicator would work too

hi Sam, great video, I have used your way for setting my tool on my 7 x 10 mini cnc lathe and it works in treat, I have changed it a little and used a digital Edge finder as the stock tho, I put it in the chuck and when the light comes on on z click touch and then x click touch you may want to try it yourself, thanks daniel
@CNC4XR78 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Kitson That's interesting there's always several ways to accomplish the same task. I do not have a electronic edge finder.. Do you find that it is accurate? Great tip Be Safe, Sam
@danielkitson68788 жыл бұрын
Yes it's is safe and works well, you done have to look at the gap between the tool and stock, you just watch for it to light up, then click touch, you could do the same with it stock bar mounted in some plastic and a wire and bulb from the stock to the tool post, when the tip of tool touches the stock the bulb would light up, then always keep it for when you add new tools ? G-made a holder on his tool turret to do much the same thing, that where I got the idea, thanks daniel

Curious how this worked out. Other videos or docs I have read do it different. I tried it based off your video...went to run a program and the tool(tool 1 master tool) went way farther in than it should. Double checked the program and it was correct....I deleted everything from the tool table and it ran fine....
@CNC4XR79 жыл бұрын
+Julia Goodridge Hmm That is indeed strange, Tool 1 (master tool) should have no offsets in the tool table so if you Zero your part on tool 1 and run the code with tool 1 it should be fine. All tools offset from tool 1. when setting the tool table you only Zero on tool ! the Master tool all other tools after they are at zero you click touch X touch Z. when setting up zero for a run you have to zero the part to Tool 1. If you Zero to tool 0 that may have been your issue. Let me know, Be Safe, Sam
@CncObsession9 жыл бұрын
+Julia Goodridge Offsets will take an error or two before you start to understand the concept well enough ;-)
@CNC4XR79 жыл бұрын
+CncObsession Yes it is a little confusing at first and a little different than a mill. but once you get your mind wrapped around it then your fine. Be Safe , Sam

Ok my question is the X.. How would I drill a hole in the center of a piece of stock. Especially if the diameter wasn't known. You say you aren't going to worry about spindle centerline but that escapes me.. I am assuming that you have to go to lathe centerline with master tool and touch off... cnc lathe is new to me..
@CNC4XR79 жыл бұрын
+TheRetiredtech Aww yes you are correct I did touch off the centerline for X zero. However I just meant I was not concerned with the overall diameter of the knob for this project. This was my first cuts on the G0602 cnc I I did post a video " making parts" where I bored a hole and turn the piece down.

Sam when you did your tools off set is the center of the chuck still Z zero? Can you type on your MDI G0 x0 and it will center. I am having a strange problem with my lathe ( not running Mach3 but acorn) can not keep z0 after a tool offset. I use Fusion 360 99% of the time and all is reference to center line z zero. Working in the diameter mode. Just curious if Mach 3 acts that way. For the last 16 years I have been using Mach3 on mills and plasma tables with no problems . Any insight would be appreciated. John
@CNC4XR76 жыл бұрын
TheJR914 X ZERO is always the centerline of the spindle. Z ZERO is the end of the stock. In this video X ZERO is temporarily the edge of my stock to set offsets. The master tool is set to this temporary x centerline all other tolls are set from it as well. However when you set the X zero you will turn a piece of stock then measure if its 1.0 " for example then type that into the X dro then x zero should be the center of the stock. All other tool will be as well.
@TheJR9146 жыл бұрын
CNC4XR7 Thanks for the reply Sam. When I set the touch off on the x axis I input the diameter of the measure stock (1") which is the question ask my the software. When I do this the center of the stocks read .5" . x0 is the opposite side of the one inch mark. If I run a facing program it would face from 1" through center to the opposite side ( total trace of 1 "). I also use Fusion 360 for my cam. I don't think this is correct . Working with Centroid with no answers only questions. If I enter the radius at the x touch off everything is ok. Only reason I went with centroid is for my 8 position tool changer (turret) on my 1984 Ikegai lathe which is still on hold at centroid . How are you doing with your Linux? Thanks John PS. Is the XR7 the car 😀 I use '914'
@CNC4XR76 жыл бұрын
It sounds like Acorn is running in Radius Mode? can this be changed? Fusion so far only outputs Dia. mode. Shoot me a Email and we can discuss more in detail. Yes 67 Cougar XR7

How do you set the X zero on the details, because it has a diameter?
@CNC4XR78 жыл бұрын
the easy way to set X zero in Diameter mode is to make a pass on the stock measure and input that in the X DRO make sure you tool # is correct if you have populated your tool Table.
@AnwarAlfaqeehAlhusseini6 жыл бұрын
this process we do repeat it with every piece before turn it ?
@CNC4XR76 жыл бұрын
No once these tools are loaded in the tool table thats it. you simply need to set X and Z zero with the master tool all other tools will follow.

Why not touch x and z for all settings ?
@CNC4XR76 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure I understand the question? you need to set the Master tool then offset the other tools from the Master tool as Shown by lining up X and Z and pressing touch X and Touch Z

when you touched off the drill the drill should of been in the centre of the work piece for axis X the Z was correct
@CNC4XR75 жыл бұрын
During initial tool setup all tool are set with X zero being the edge of the round stock. The Drill bit center line was lined up with the edge of the round stock and zeroed. once all the tools are setup in the tool table. To setup for a run use the master tool to turn a piece of stock. measure the diameter and enter this information in the X DRO. this will adjust all tools to machine center line. this is the method used in this video.
@davecox9005 жыл бұрын
@@CNC4XR7 Thats very smart like that, I was thinking when the drill was going to be used it wouldn't find the centre of the work piece, wish you lived closer to me I would never be away, don't the same as you built my mill and just converted a lathe to cnc too, what would be good if you could show how to take a drawing from fusion on the lathe and machine it if that's possible

I dont know how this machine work,but if you know your measure rod(part) is 1/8 inch or 10mm why cant you put that on dial? then measure all tools. it should work? and you ready to cut :) offset number just be bigger becouse your x0 is actual center of part.measuring drill is easy touch with your part x with atleast 2 sprirals contact with paper between and that is rod diamter + drill size from x0
