As a Bihari who lived 5 years in Kolkata in the late 90's, I still miss going to fish market with my dad on Sunday mornings and buying fresh fish. I love bengali recipes so much! We Bihari people add a lot more spice to our curry but my mum took inspiration from bengali cuisines and we do add eggplants, potato and cauliflower in our fish curry. My mum also adds potatoes to chicken and mutton curry. Watching bengalis cook is pleasure to the eyes.

This must be the quintessentially Bengali comfort food. 😊 To be honest, Bengalis love mutton kosha and bhetki fish fry, they die for ilish and bagda prawn - but at the centre of all is our very homely রুই মাছের ঝোল - un-glamorous, low in the spice scale, and yet, accompanied by a bowl of plain white rice, infinitely pleasurable for the soul. 😌

I was seriously ill today and this machher jhol saved my day. I have followed each and every little detail of this recipe and the result was exactly like the one which I used to have at home. Only I have added a bit of grated turmeric root instead of turmeric powder in order to make it healthier.

Love this recipe! Im going to try it.. although I think a better description for the Bori would be sun dried lentil nuggets instead of dumplings...since dumplings are usually stuffing inside of a wrapper. ( for western audiences )

Its the same feeling when I visited Assam and try some Assamese cuisine it's just so much similar to our bengali cuisine just that they serve us three different bowls of lentils in one thali which we generally don't have otherwise the taste is very similar

Simple yet excellent! We rarely get good potol in Bombay. It's almost always full of large seeds that have to be scooped out, leaving just the outer 'skin' of the potol. Would love to just halve them and throw them in the kadai, lol.

"Macher Jhol" - didn't eat this in 2 years, this will be my next weekend cooking. Tomader recipes gulo bhalo lage bolle kom hobe. I live in NY and didn't go to India and ate my mom's food for more than 2 years due to COVID. I was getting so desperate to taste the food from home that I could do anything to feel it again. You know how most Bengali moms always describe recipe -"bhab moto dibi" - "the instinct" - which I almost lost totally since I stopped cooking Bengali food. Then I stumbled upon your channel. I cooked a few recipes from your channel and they all came out so close to the taste that I was used to. I am cooking Bengali food everyday and I have never been happier. Ki bole je dhonnobad debo tomader !?! :)

@@farhanaakhter1719 Yes, you know after adding the water to make it a curry, usually it becomes a little thin so to give the curry a proper texture, a pinch or two of atta is being mixed with warm water and added to the curry (just like corn flour is added to chinese foods, but it makes more thick). Adding atta keeps it runny but gives it a nice smooth texture without adding any taste. Do try and you will notice the difference. All the best! :-)

Of course.. There are several "authentic" recipes which vary every 100 miles and even within the same family.. e.g... use of different fishes, vegetables, spices (cumin, coriander or panch phoron, hing) and much less oil..

রুই মাছ আর সবজি দিয়ে ঝোল আমার মা এর হাতে দারুন লাগে।। শুধু জিরে গোল মরিচ আর হলুদ দিয়ে বানানো কাঁচা লঙ্কা বা আদা বাটা ছাড়া।।
