Machi Koro: Deluxe Edition review - Board Game Brawl

In practice with teaching and playing this game so much, I prefer the 'only 2 dice' approach because it forces people to track turns better when they 'pass the dice' to the next player. When the game gets fast (it can) people can accidentally step over each other's turns.

Wow this deluxe edition is perfect! I was so close on purchasing the original version but im glad that i didn't. For me who dont own the game the deluxe is the perfect choice. And many people say that Machi Koro is not fun without the Harbor Expansion, that its essential. So this deluxe edition is what they should have released from the beginning. Just glad that they created this edition for those who dont have the game yet

+thermoptic I will say that the DX coins was one of the most effortless punching that I ever had to do for a game. I was finished with all 3 sheets within 5 minutes. Granted, the only other games I punched out for was Dragon Strike and Quarantine and its "Preorder bonus that became a mini expansion" expansion First Aid. Sadly, like Nick's, I had a card warp problem too, but I also had warping with my copy of Hanabi, and both came from the same store.

Hi guys, just gotten the deluxe edition. However, not sure am I the only one? But the fifth player's amusements park landmarks card had an printing error at the back of the card showing as airports. (Meaning to say, the front is different from the back.)

I bought it this weekend, mainly got this because of the cost of getting all of the sets in one purchase for less than buying the base with the expansions.

just bought the base game and the harbor expansion, harbor expansion was warped. so if you think you are avoiding that by not getting the deluxe edition, don't count on it

The deluxe edition should really be called the... "oops we forgot to package the first and second expansions with the base game to begin with (because that's how the game of been released to begin with). Sorry guys, now you can have them all together. Oh and we realize that we charged too much money for the base game and necessary first expansion. So here, have it all together for less money than buying the two parts separately."

But this was of course planned from the beginning, its all about money. Just like all the videogames where they release a full-price game followed by many DLC expansions, that will cost you a lot of money. A couple of years later they release a "game of the year edition" or "the definitive edition" with the games bundeld with all the DLC expansions on one disc at a low price. Works with board games too :)

It's pretty much a GOTY edition of a video game, where it's just the base game and most/all of the DLC and expansions. Still makes the game more platable for those that heard about it but weren't sure if 70 dollars would be good for the game and the expansions. But yeah, it is pretty iffy, coming from someone that has preordered this from his FLGS.

+Jason Wayne Speicher He did bring that up for those that haven't bought the game yet. But yeah, I just got my copy of Deluxe in and it has the same warping problem as his did. I also got an additional amusement park card due to an audit error. In the Harbor shrink wrapped deck, the Amusement park was with the Airport instead of being with the rest of the 5th player set of starting cards. So, somehow it got miscounted as missing and when said run was mistakenly flagged as missing the card, they taped it on the tin shrink wrap in an ultrapro sleeve. Mine was brown

I respect that you don't think this version was a value as a "Deluxe Edition", fair enough. However, I don't think you're being entirely fair on 2 poiints: 1) The original was in a cardboard box, this is in a tin. Given the economics of board games, this is actually a deluxe version of the box at least. 2) You seem so focused on the number of dice, but I would counter: having more dice could make the game harder to play, not easier. Why? Because all players are looking at the same set of dice, and only one player is rolling dice at any one time. If there were MORE sets of dice, it could lead to confusion as to which dice are in play, or whose turn it was. The dice function as both tools for ALL players at the same time, as well as a current player marker.

a fair review, i own the original and watching this review, i totally agree, its crazy how fast they release a so called deluxe edition, yet the deluxe is pretty rubbish.. good and informative video, keep up the great work. going to subscribe to you.

+matthlowder Well, 10 as it has the full harbor expansion in it and I already mixed in the 5th player parts into the vanilla set of my Deluxe copy. When the Purples do come into play, I go with "If you draw a purple card and there's already as many cards of it out as there are players, then discard the card and draw another".

I've heard that the cards of the "deluxe" edition are of inferior quality compared to the orignal. Is that true? And you're right about nothing about it deserving the word "deluxe" attached to it. They could have at least printed foil cards, add a few extra dice and include the playing mat. But they couldn't even bother to make the card sizes match between sets.Calling this substandard is not only an understatement, but an insult to anything substandard.

Machi Koro is a great game and I love it. However, IDW are not a good publisher. The cards are of substandard quality and the fact the "deluxe" edition still contains only two dice is just ridiculous. A nice edition, yes, but far from deluxe. If I didn't already own the game and both expansions, I would buy this because it's good value but IDW have some work to do.

I really, sincerely, hope IDW never gets the license to another game I want. They clearly have no idea what they are doing. Among other things, I'll never forget my Machi Koro base game coins covered in mold. IDW: Just the worst.

Machi Koro is a great little game, but IDW are a disgrace of a company. They have put out sub standard products and then ignore customers when they try to communicate with them. Awful awful publisher.
