You could argue that it is crazy to be watching another tradesman at work or you can view it as an opportunity to learn how others do their work and overcome problems with the tools or the job. KZbin videos are an ideal way to learn more about your trade or other trades and occupations.

Had a similar problem many years ago,I almost scrapped a body block for a 1 litre turps bottle I had been working on,it had been drilled and ground almost finished just the bores to copy out after taking blocks out of machine (13"x8"x8" D2 toolsteel)and checking they were tapered by .040" they were out of tolerance and volume. After the inquest a note was found saying do not use machine for boring body blocks the head was out of square and nobody knew except the guy who had retired 3 months earlier.

I used to set up and line bore all of the steadies and boring carriages on the trepanners we used to build back in the 1970's. We didn't have any real alignment equipment to use other than a 1" travel dial indicator and magnetic base. If we got everything within .010" we would be lucky. Never knew if we had it right or not until the first hole was trepanned. All of this was good for punching holes in drill collars for the oilfield industry back then. Ken

you can bore the steady rest of the boring bar with some tool turning on the chucks side to straight it up and put sleeve ***!
@userwl2850
@userwl2850 4 жыл бұрын
It would then be oversized. 👍
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 4 жыл бұрын
I think I would have mounted a boring bar in the 4 jaw chuck and then used the carriage to drag the steady away to cut the bore perfectly true to the spindle centerline. Of course depending on the lathes alignment that may or may not align with the bed soo..... I do think that would have been a lot faster fix. Also could have turned a slip fit bushing for the chuck and passed a conventional boring bar thru the fixed bolted steady using the carriage. Lots of ways to lick this calf I reckon. 😎 a proper boring mill with plenty of clamps would knock it out in the shortest order.
@lesliesoutham7396

But wouldn’t that leave the bore oversize ?
@chrisgilbert9534
@chrisgilbert9534 4 жыл бұрын
Not if the caps mating surfaces are machined, to close the vertical axis. Line bore back to the dimension needed. Use to do it on power press connecting rods. But on consideration, if the lower half is too low you'd have to sleeve the bore, key into position and then machine back.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisgilbert9534 Pretty sure Dave said the bore was high so i figured it would machine out ok and the closing of the caps is also how I would fix bore size if needed.

Looks like good work. Building up the welds slowly seems right. Might have been better to leave it on the lathe b/c fixturing during welding can minimize distortion if massive enough. But obviously you'd be stuck welding up down and every which way. I have had bad luck with welding distortion so I would have used that mill and maybe a bit of scraping. BTW, I'm surprised to see a Bridgeport on your side of the pond. I hear it's not common. Do you have trouble getting R8 tooling?

I'm guessing you could not slew the boring bar with the cross slide because the guide bairing wouldn't allow it to move. Anyway the guide was all over the shop and needed doing.

Such amazing and interesting content! I wonder if I could ask how you prevent the tool from contacting the face of the chuck as it breaks through. Does the feed stop automatically or do you have to stop it manually? I can only imagine what damage it could cause.

Honestly I would have built up the bore with weld then put the steady on the machine with a stiff spring under the clamping nut and some heavy moly grease inbetween the ways and the rest. I would have put an offset boring bar in the lathe chuck and used the carriage to push feed the steady into the offset boring bar. In theory it would bore it parallel perpendicular and concentric to the machine. As long as the clamping pressure of the steady rest wasn't too much for the carriage to push it should maintain a legitimate contact no different than standard ways. This all depends on the condition of the bottom of the steady rest where it contacts the ways, and the portion of the way bed where the steady rest clamp sets would have to have been ground. Not sure it would work, just a thought.

Nothing more annoying than someone driving the carriage into a steady and bending it. One or two bolts and if it's to heavy pick it up with the hoist / crane to move it. It might be worth running a clock over the tail stock guide way on the bed as it probably tweaked it as well in the collision spot. With any luck that would not be the case on a Veteran machine like that. It can be fixed though without having to scrape the entire way though, I have had to do it on a couple of machines. Sorry , 25 years fixing machine tools and I still get grumpy. Have a good day

Just throwing this out there would it be possible to build up the ID catch a boring bar in the chuck nip up the tool holder but not extremely tight and somehow feed it into the bar along the ways I find with the best Will in the world weld will pull some bit
@userwl2850
@userwl2850 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it could be done like that. ... if I'd been given time. Also it would be difficult to machine as welding this steel 4145 goes extremely hard and would need grinding. Good thinking. 👏🏻👍

@@userwl2850 that’s true I used silicon bronze once to weld similar just for easy machine ability. I have a dsg type 25 I think it is, bullet proof machine give the arms a workout using it all day though. Great machine to horse off material.

@@userwl2850 - Since you would be cutting it down anyway, building up the bore with weld would be pretty forgiving. Line bore it back to size and alignment, has to be perfect then!
