After the inquest a note was found saying do not use machine for boring body blocks the head was out of square and nobody knew except the guy who had retired 3 months earlier.

you can bore the steady rest of the boring bar with some tool turning on the chucks side to straight it up and put sleeve ***!
@userwl28504 жыл бұрын
It would then be oversized. 👍
@bcbloc024 жыл бұрын
I think I would have mounted a boring bar in the 4 jaw chuck and then used the carriage to drag the steady away to cut the bore perfectly true to the spindle centerline. Of course depending on the lathes alignment that may or may not align with the bed soo..... I do think that would have been a lot faster fix. Also could have turned a slip fit bushing for the chuck and passed a conventional boring bar thru the fixed bolted steady using the carriage. Lots of ways to lick this calf I reckon. 😎 a proper boring mill with plenty of clamps would knock it out in the shortest order.
@lesliesoutham73964 жыл бұрын
But wouldn’t that leave the bore oversize ?
@chrisgilbert95344 жыл бұрын
Not if the caps mating surfaces are machined, to close the vertical axis. Line bore back to the dimension needed. Use to do it on power press connecting rods. But on consideration, if the lower half is too low you'd have to sleeve the bore, key into position and then machine back.
@bcbloc024 жыл бұрын

Honestly I would have built up the bore with weld then put the steady on the machine with a stiff spring under the clamping nut and some heavy moly grease inbetween the ways and the rest. I would have put an offset boring bar in the lathe chuck and used the carriage to push feed the steady into the offset boring bar. In theory it would bore it parallel perpendicular and concentric to the machine. As long as the clamping pressure of the steady rest wasn't too much for the carriage to push it should maintain a legitimate contact no different than standard ways. This all depends on the condition of the bottom of the steady rest where it contacts the ways, and the portion of the way bed where the steady rest clamp sets would have to have been ground. Not sure it would work, just a thought.

Nothing more annoying than someone driving the carriage into a steady and bending it. One or two bolts and if it's to heavy pick it up with the hoist / crane to move it. It might be worth running a clock over the tail stock guide way on the bed as it probably tweaked it as well in the collision spot. With any luck that would not be the case on a Veteran machine like that. It can be fixed though without having to scrape the entire way though, I have had to do it on a couple of machines.
