These look and work very well. I did get a smile from the comment at the start about the purchased movers being a good concept poorly implemented. I have purchased many items over the years which fit such a description. When we make things ourselves, we can put in the time and materials to make the design work well, like you just did. The 1/4in height is good, so much easier to lift a machine a small amount. Dave.

Just a friendly welding tip (since I know you're newer to welding in general), everything looks great but two things you could do to help increase strength is to first off, bevel your edges - this gives you more surface area and also a larger bead that's recessed so less of it needs to be ground off if you're looking for a flush surface. Secondly, it looked to me like your wire speed might be a bit too low, possibly your amperage as well... don't be afraid to have the wire really pour into your weld and build up good beads... either that or slow down your rate of travel by hand... (again, beveled edges help with this too bc you see how much more filler material you should be pushing in to fill the void.) Love the content in general and watch all of your builds, keep it up! Cheers, mate! - Jesse
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't show it in the video very well but all the edges were beveled and you are right, it makes a huge difference! The amperage is always maxed. It's a 120V welder (never again) The wire feed was correct for a while but the longer I use the welder the slower the feed has to be. I'm sure you heard it like a change in the sound every second or so. I thought the wire feed was it but turning it up made it worse. I think it is supposed to be a 60% duty cycle which from what I understand means you can weld 6 minute and cool for 4 minutes. I'm guessing that is true the first 10 minutes but after cooling for 4 minute you only get about 2 minutes welding the second time. After that forget it... you might as well take a 1-hour break! Certainly I am no expert at welding and I appreciate all the advice and help I can get but there first 4 or 5 minute I do great! I need to a new welder! A 220V!

Well done another great project under you belt. Perhaps ratchet straps from a trailer center may be a better option to keep the trolleys from moving. You could even use a very long one and go around the outside of all 4 trolleys. Those bungy straps looked like they stretched when moving. @WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Yes yes... the ones I bought and returned were silly. They would work if the leg of the machine were 2" x 2". Anything larger and the outside wheel lifted and the machine fell off the mover. They did it that way so that the load was shared between all casters. On mine the outside corner takes half the load instead of 1/3rd but I used heavier casters.

My lathe is a Goodway, and it scary heavy, so much that it pulled apart a chain S link trying to move it with a forklift, lucky i saw it and we set her down as it was about to come off.. This lathe was toppled once before from someone else and i have had to rebuild it.. So underestimating the weight is how those things happen and not using large enough chains and such. Anyway. love the design and build but your plate that is welded to the bottom makes me a bit nervous.. I'm a fairly good welder but i would be really scared to put my lathe on those without having reinforced those welds on both sides of your bottom plates.
@Kami8705
@Kami8705 4 жыл бұрын
The fact he didn't weld the other side of the plate worries me too, but he has fairly light machinery. It adds up quick though, a bridgeport with no add ons is over 2000lbs.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I agree on the welds. I welded one on the inside. I'm not a very good welder and I was having problems welding the inside corners. I have a feeling I simply need more power. For my lathes and mill I'm not worried plus the machine is only off the floor 1/2" if they do break. After I figure out what I'm doing (or get another welder) I probably go back and weld the tops.

The bungee cords work very well. the only time they do anything is when the floor is not level and the corner of the machine loses contact with the mover. I asked Smith and he said the post hole digger was his and that I borrowed it from him 11 years ago. I no longer have a Johnson bar OR post hole digger. Both said I could borrow them whenever I need them but seeing as how I hate digging holes and have no idea what a Johnson bar is I told them I wasn't interested.
