See how I make a simple backplate to hold the Sanou 4-jaw independent chuck in another chuck. These small 'piggy back' chucks speed up machining small components considerably on both my lathes. Also see the use of transfer screws to find the chuck PCD.

i have some larger brass or bronze gears that i considered turning down to make a backplate for a 80mm collet chuck, would you recommend this material for a back plate?

Did you do this so you can use it like a big collet block? A way to hold stock when offset turning cams and cranks, where you can quick and easily remove the work from the lathe to do other machining processes on it without compleatly loosing any important positional register on the part, then being able to drop the part and chuck back on the lathe and have the features you originally turned still all concentric with the lathes spindle? BTW, Those Allen key stub transfer punches are a stroke of genius........ I am SOOOO nicking that idea. :D

Is that tach in the right background an add on or is it part of the original parts of the lathe? If add on do you have a link to it or ???? Very cleaver transfer marking with the grub screws and pieces of sharpened Allen wrench pieces!👍👍👍 I guess you don't find that the chuck hanging out so far has negatively affected rigidity?

Hi Dwight I bought the tachometer from Banggood. I will put a link up later. Also the wiring instructions for the tachometer is on my KZbin community page. The chuck doesn't affect rigidity as I have heavy duty tapered roller bearings in the headstock. Regards Steve

Do you mind if I ask what type of steel you used for the back plate Steve, is it En1a? Thanks Stuart

It is Bright Mild Steel which I bought on eBay. I used 90mm Diameter X 25mm long.

Good work, well presented as usual. I may have missed a trick, but apart from balancing and personal pride in good workmanship, is there a reason for an accurate fit between chuck and register on a 4-jaw independent chuck that will be adjusted using an indicator anyway?
@SteveJordan

I just like to get them near enough, it doesn't make a difference though on these independent checks like you say.

Hi Steve , thanks for the great video. I would like to add that the registration accuracy does help a lot with balance a lot and if you are putting in something offset and it happens to be off balance in opposite of your chuck it will help. On the other hand if it is off balance the same way as your chuck is off balance it will really exaggerate the problem. I just thought I would add my 2 cents. Very nice work and ideas Dale in Canada

Good video! Is that a 5 inch chuck on the lathe? I'm trying to decide if I should get a 5 inch 3 jaw chuck or a 4 inch 3 jaw chuck for my 7X10 mini lathe.
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 3 жыл бұрын
Hi yes it is a 5" inch chuck. I think you can buy the backplate from a company called Arceurotrade uk

@@SteveJordan There's also an on-line company here in the U.S. called "Little Machine Shop" that carries the chucks and backplates for them for these mini lathes.

Hi Steve , I’m a new subscriber to your channel and I must admit I find all your videos really helpful and with a recent purchase of a myford ml7 I can’t wait to do the same improvements you have made ! My question is can I go up to the 125 mm Chinese Chuck from bangood for my lathe , what size is the main Chuck you use on yours mate ? Again , watching your videos has become very addictive lol
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, Thanks. Yes I mainly use the 125mm chucks. You can buy the standard backplates for them on eBay, or you can buy the backplate with 24 indexed holes around the diameter of the backplate if you want to set up indexed work in the future. Regards Steve
