Machining Project - Screwdriver - Forme Industrious

In this video I make a Screwdriver with interchangeable tips. The end cap comes off and spare tips can be stored inside the Screwdriver body. Made from 25mm diameter Aluminium. This was a good basic project to develop skills, improve tool angles and shapes and not least of all job planning. The final work, being milling the flats, I didn't want to clamp the Aluminium body too hard, in fear of marking the material. So I was a little nervous but, all was well.
If you are the type of person that doesn't see the sense in making a screwdriver because they can be bought so cheap, then this video is not for you. For those that love and appreciate all that goes into making things, then I hope you enjoy this project.
This was a hard project to film due to the difficulty of placing the camera where I needed to be. Well anyway. I think I have enough footage to show the work.
Special thanks to my Patreon Supporters whose contribution helps produce these videos.
Thank you for watching, hope to see you again next time.
Kind Regards
Scott Turner

Thank you, this brings back memories. I went to Brooklyn Technical HS in the early 80s. I remember making a hammer from stock metal, we had drill and tap the hammer head, add the grips on the handle, we even has to grind our own bits for the lathe. Haven't touched a lathe since but I still remember the teacher. "Never leave the key in the chuck!"

Scott, you have taken me back 43 years and with a tear in my eye to my beloved Hardinge quick release collet lathe, all tools made by hand on the grind wheel with another set for soft brass with no chip rake. Diemaster and Cincinnati milling machines. Then the most important item .... Rizzla cigarette paper for finding the touching point. 2020 has been shit but this has given it a wonderful ending, thank you so much for sharing! West

Hey Scott, nice job. At 8:03 you could hold the body of the handle by slipping a piece of split PVC pipe over the knurl and clamping the part inside the body of the chuck. The plastic will protect the knurl and give plenty of grip. Disclaimer.... you need to have close to the right size pipe and enough bore diameter inside your chuck. Regards, Preso

That was the exact plan. I didn't show me cursing on the video, but I became more focused on filming and drilled in too far creating the storage pocket. Plenty strong so far. I haven't done anything too heavy though but The power will be fine for the capacity of the mill.
