Not only do you learn more when you ask why... You become more likable by those around you. By asking why, you are showing humility. Second, most people enjoy talking about their expertise and are more than willing to share their passion with others. It's always exciting to get into a conversation with a wise, older man or woman, who just seems to be waiting for someone to ask them a question... Almost like you make their whole day by asking for their opinion!

To be fair though, early in my career it seemed honestly like no one wanted to teach. So I had to learn everything on my own, inside and out side of work. All I did was work and study machining 24/7 for the first years.

Love this video, I’m always asking a ton of questions at work even though I’m an experienced machinist, the best thing I ever learned was from my old boss/ mentor was , “no matter how experienced you are, there is always something new you can learn from someone else who pictures things differently than you”. The moment you stop asking questions because you think you’re the best, is the moment you stop learning and and become the worst.

It’s amazing how this video honestly applies to any trade or career, we as beings who are curious are the ones willing to make big changes and efficient advancements, whereas the ones who want to be told everything and understand nothing usually don’t get too far or are stuck in a “lower” position at their job, where I work at, a plastic factory, i am always asking questions about why a press requires a certain amount of pressure, the certain amount of cooling time, and why a robot (that picks the part out of the press) needs to be set in a certain way. Or whenever the press is going off, I always ask about what the problem is and what tends to cause that issue and how to fix it

If you do not understand WHY, you will never be able to progress beyond doing what you are told to do. Knowing why allows you to figure out HOW to advance to the next level. When you can not answer WHY, that defines the limits of your KNOWLEDGE.

this important mindset was teached in my old shop where i was during my apprenticeship but only if you were interested, same goes for shool. most apprentices wouldn't ask why but when you did all journeymen and teachers walked the extra mile for you to understand everything
@Jessie_Smith

It is nice when you have people around you that understand the importance of this mindset. I had a teacher in school that was this way. Even when you would ask him to show you how to do something he would make you explain it to him. It was weird but often times we actually knew how to do it but just wasn't letting ourselves believe that we did so by him doing that, it forced us to slow down and walk ourselves through it and because of that we would understand it so much better.

My final solution to chatter depends on the job and how many parts are on the work order. Obviously, like the video suggests, I slow the rpm and/or increase the feed during setup. If the work order is only for a few parts I'm slowing the RPM and/or increasing the feed. On production jobs with multiple passes I'm reprogramming a greater radial cut and increasing the feed more often than not. On production work never miss an opportunity to increase material removal rate. Always build on continuing improvement on repeat jobs.

I just wanna take a moment to appreciate the mindset is on "you CAN do better/be better" and not "why are you not better". I'm barely 5 years or so into setting/operating and working with 5 axis WFLs and really only now starting to get naturally curious about the specifics of why. It was a gradual change for me as I'm maturing but the power and satisfaction behind knowing what to answer to team lead or project manager and provide input that is taken on board really helps drive the point home - always ask why and keep growing. And big props for helping spark curiosity - we need new guys who want to explore careers in cnc and not just because they need something to do between weekends. This industry is much more than the sum of its parts!

Tool pressure seems to be a big key in machining. I haven’t been machining long, but I know that speeding up my feed helps with basic chatter. Then depending on how much material is being left for my finishing tool helps with my end finish. I adjust those things, which is a tool pressure thing too. You tinker with things and get opinions all the time. I wish I understood more of the calculation side of machining, but that will come in time. There is damn near a calculation for everything and a million ways to skin a cat

hi guys , is it not that having less feed rate will give you finner cutting , so can anyone explain why less feed rate did the trick 0:22 and what is tool pressure relation with feed and rpm?
@mikecurry3679
@mikecurry3679 Жыл бұрын
Chatter has SO MANY variables tho... tool length, step over, flute length, feed direction, speed, feed, material, work holding, worm gear play, trunion backlash, machine, tool, coolant, material quality... typically, slowing the spindle, increasing the feed rate slightly, will clear up your issue, or even just keeping them the same, but going to a climb cut, rather than conventional, or even just a little positive comp in your rougher, so your finisher bites a little deeper. But GOOD LUCK, on an extra deep cut, on extremely then walls, with a polished finish call out ☠
