We always had strips of .030" copper shim stock with a thumb tab bent on them to slide in between the jaws and the parts we didn't want marked up by the jaws. Have to apply more pressure so it doesn't slip. Heavy back sand paper works go to; better on certain things.

A lot of guys underestimate how much trouble it would be to make a hex head 100% true to a bolt shank.
