UPDATE: in macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple has officially released a checkbox option that lets users turn the sound back on! We did it! We brought back the bong! Hey, all! Hope you enjoy the new video. As part of our tribute to the Mac startup sound, today we ask: what startup sound was your favorite, and do you think Apple should bring it back to the Mac?
@DBLCreations6 жыл бұрын
I have a Mac Pro, that came with macOS Sierra and it even doesn't play the sound anymore, it did in the beginning though, just not anymore since a couple of updates. So a command line might fix this, i will try it out. But yeah, i think they do need to bring it back. There was always an option to turn it down or mute it, so i think people should have that choice. I liked it, it let me knew that my system started up fine.

The Quadra startup sound (or any Mac with the 1 MB ROM) was my favourite. Apple should definitely bring back the startup chime - it's what made the Mac different from a PC way back when.

I have the one of the first iMacs with the startup sound (1998 Rev. B Bondi Blue), and one of the last iMacs with the startup sound (Late 2015 5K Retina), and yes both start up with the same sound which is amazing to think about given how nearly everything else is completely different. Very sad how Apple removed it from the latest Mac models, and it just goes to show how the Mac is being neglected by Apple in the post-iOS-device era (iMac with Retina 5K and iMac Pro are really the only big product releases they've done to show otherwise in the last four years, maybe the 2016 MacBook Pro but that one is debatable for a variety of compromises, and the MacBook only exists to provide an iPad-style Mac at a much higher price).

My favorite Mac startup sound was one that you didn't go into in this video: the underrated 5200/5300/6200/6300 sound. It was also used in several Mac ads from around the time. I've always found it to be very friendly and inviting, while still saying "You are about to use an awesome computer." It helps that there were a bunch of 5200s at my elementary school, and thus the 5200 startup sound was the first Mac startup sound I ever heard.

I hate the new Apple these days, they just keep removing things people love, things that are iconic, and things we are used to, when its not needed! Apple back in the day used to ADD features, not REMOVE them, their products felt different, and i think its a real shame that Apple is removing these features, that their products are recognized for.. And all the way back in 2007, when the Apple event where the iPhone was getting announced, Steve said its gonna be a Phone, a iPod, and a breakthrough Internet communication (my english is bad i know), now tell me, how useful is an iPod, without a headphone jack? And that they dont have space for it, goddamn it, a guy from the internet brings it right back, which takes up much more actual space, so that excuse is kinda useless. Jeez, this is long, i doubt that anyone cares enough to read this all lol

Nah, Apple used to be notorious for having proprietary connectors and only being able to write to storage media formatted in their file system so you couldn't put a file on a floppy on a Mac and use it on a PC. I think there were a lot of things to like about Apple before they switched over to focusing almost entirely on portable devices, but that wasn't one of them.

i read it all and i feel ya. 😥
@dunebasher19715 жыл бұрын
"Apple back in the day used to ADD features, not REMOVE them" - actually, Apple has a very long history of discarding older features in order to move forward. When it transitioned away from the 68k CPUs it didn't try and maintain compatibility for newer machines, because that would have compromised its ability to innovate. When it released the iMac it removed the floppy drive. Conventional logic dictated that the iMac could never succeed without a floppy drive because every PC manufacturer still supplied them, but look what happened. Apple was also first to eliminate the optical drive, starting in 2009. Apple has never been slow to remove legacy technology when it thinks it's headed for the graveyard, and so far it's never been wrong to do so.

You didn’t get em all. Early-mid 90’s Performas (perhaps indicative of Apple’s severely fractured product strategy) had a handful of different startup sounds, from the tri-tone “bing!” in earlier models to the oddly resonant synthesizer riff of 5200 & 6200’s. Check out the Mactracker app; it includes the startup sound of every Mac in existence.

It was easier to figure out what machine you had by sound.

Want the Startup chime again on 2016+ Mac? Follow this info: (so far confirmed to work on many models using Mojave or Catalina) 1. Open Terminal 2. Type sudo nvram StartupMute=%00 3. Enter admin password and press enter (you will not see anything as you type) 4. Restart Mac and enjoy. To disable, do anyone of these 4: - Type sudo nvram StartupMute=%01 - Type sudo nvram -d StartupMute - reset PRAM on startup (press and hold CMD (⌘)-OPT(⌥)-P-R on startup) - turn off and pull plug on desktop Macs (not all models) FYI, earliest source to post this is Jan 2020 (so far) To follow along trying to track down the earliest source of where this comes from, check out: mrmacintosh.com/how-to-enable-the-mac-startup-chime-on-your-2016-macbook-pro/#comment-270

They're two different things. The Windows XP sound is in the software-when you log into your user account. The Mac startup sound is in the ROM. You hear it immediately. With a Windows system, you would have to wait. I know it seems insignificant, but it's still a big difference, if you ask me. (But I still do love the XP sound. Heck, I play it on the piano).

One of my favorite boot-up sounds on a classic Macintosh is the one found in Macintosh 5200/5300 as well as the Macintosh Performa 6300.

On my 2020 Intel Macbook Air, the terminal command circulating around DID re-nable the sound, but its volume was tied to your system volume level so if you had your mac muted or low volume when shutting it down, you wouldn't hear the chime on start-up. Im guessing thats why people thought it didn't work. Its nice that turning it back on now is just a checkbox though.

4:14 Ken, Sosumi is an F MAJOR chord, not an F SHARP chord. It's an easy mistake to make, though. The position of the keys on a piano are similar, but the F sharp chord is harsh and grating compared to the F major chord, which is relaxing and chill, kind of like the "palate cleanser" after a crash that you meant.

TheOrangePulley yeah lol I just buy older ones. My main laptop is a 2011 MacBook Pro with an i7 and 4gigs of ram and the only desktop I have is a 2007 iMac with a core 2 duo and I’m about to upgrade to 6gb ram on that. Older macs are just better. They have all the things that are removed on the new ones

Well, I’m glad I decided to buy the MacBook Air 2017 model because that one still has the startup sound. Not that I knew that the other Macs did not have the sound when I bought it, but now that I do know, I feel it was a very good choice to go with the MacBook Air because it’s the newest one of them and I’ve always loved the startup sound

Man, I love that first Power Macintosh sound... I found a 6100/66 in my garage a couple days ago that apparently belonged to the Oklahoma State Treasurer's office at some point (O.O) but it seems totally bricked. It'll turn on and play that beautiful string sound, though, and that's about all you need. :)

I get why startup and shutdown sounds got removed from Macs and Windows. They make starting up and shutting down slower, and while they used to serve the purpose of telling you the computer is working, they really don't need anymore because most people know how to use computers. Design shouldn't get in the way. While my logical brain knows this, I can still miss computers being flashy, OSes being aesthetically unique and trying to wow you.

Did you know that Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X used to play videos on first boot? OS 9's intro was simple, and displayed the welcome message in a couple of languages. OS X Kodiak (Public beta) and Cheetah 10.0 and Puma 10.1 and Jaguar 10.2 all used the same intro. It changed in OS X Panther 10.3 (which had 2 intro videos, a beta intro and a final intro). It changed again in OS X Tiger 10.4, which only had one video. OS X Leopard 10.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6 used the same intro again. OS X Lion 10.7 was the 1st to ship without a welcome video. That was a real bummer.

My favourite startup sound was the first generation Power Macintosh - with external speakers the crisp attack of the string and bassy resonance was really nice. I like the final startup sound, but it often sounded grainy like an 8 bit PCM. Another thing I miss, back in the old days you would hear the startup chime through external speakers if you had them connected. At some point (post Intel transition?) this stopped. External speakers really did the startup sounds justice, one of my favourite things about the Macintosh “experience” ❤️

Classic II, as it was the first Mac I personally owned and had frequent access to. It was already an obsolete hand-me-down by the time I got it in 96, but I still loved it. There was also a utility from Apple that had samples of all the different startup sounds from every machine up until whatever version of the software you were running. I wish I could remember what it was called, I know I had it installed on a couple machines back in the day (likely downloaded from lord knows where online). IIRC, it had detailed information on just about every model that had been produced, it was sort of like a reference database. Was around the 7.6.1 or 8.x era I believe. I miss my old beige machines ;_;
