I've never driven a duplex myself, but have some experience with a quad box (20spd). I remember riding with my father years ago...the drivers used to have the sticks bent close together so they could shift both of them with one hand...real handy when you had a load and needed to split every gear .

Yea that takes us back, I used to drive a 1968 DM600 Cement Mixer, 237 with a quad box. Once I learned how it worked it was great! That old think would pull itself out of the deepest ruts & holes on many a construction site with ease. Tough ass dependable truck to say the least!

It helps you to match the rpm of the engine with the rpm on the gearbox(es), allowing the stick to fall right in.

Good looking mack. Reminds me of the 76 mack I learned in that also had the u series transmission. It was always a blast to be driving it when a load of rock was brought by guys that haven't been driving long. Cuz they couldn't figure out how you were shifting in reverse Haha.

I grew around trucks before the duplex and triplex. Never drove one, but have driven trucks with a Hi/Lo rear or 2speed rear. I guess I don't need to learn now. It was bad enough learning to drive the old 10 speed with the U shift pattern and 10th gear You shifted up. The progressive 9 speed was another weird one. Instead of 5 low and 4 hi it was 4 low and 5 hi.

When I started driving in '78 they had some gasoline Fords and 2 Macks like that. I had no idea how to shift them. Used the main only when I had to take a trailer for some reefer repair. It was also a very tight place to back in, no power steering and a scorching summer day. Was not unhappy when newer rigs were bought.

@Fireheart528 Its not hard to learn shifting a twin stick. If you can shift an un-synchronized gear box (Fuller/Rockwell/Mack) then you can shift a twin stick. You just have to remember that you split the main gears (1-5) using the compound. I have a B61 with the 9 speed Mack duplex and its pretty strait forward. You can even shift it like a 5 speed when your unloaded. leave the compound in HI and shift 1-5. Although if you have a light load you may want to shift 1-4 in LO split 4 and shift to 5
@1940limited10 жыл бұрын
Looks as if he used high range in 1-3, then split 4th, then stayed in high range for 5th? The later models had the range stick closest to the driver. Nice video.

I drove a '79 R-model for 3 years in the nineties for a building material company, that employed the dual stage turbo and the main box with two spd. aux
@boblackey111 жыл бұрын
Mack transmissions are triple countershaft rather than two. The transmission box under the cab is big, long & heavy. Supposedly they can take more abuse & heavy hauling & not break than a Fuller. I don't know about that though. But Mack rears with their dual reduction gearing are extremely tough. 44,000 pound or 65,000 pound Mack rears with a camel back suspension can really take the punishment, heavy off road loads & keep on trucking.
@toddgittins56923 жыл бұрын
What about the Western Contractor option on the R models?
@boblackey13 жыл бұрын
@@toddgittins5692 I drove Mack tractors, dumps and concrete mixers for years in the east. Also a few Pete's, KWs and IH. I'm not familiar with the Western contractor. Our Macks were RDs but the older dump and mixers were DMs with an offset cab. But for getting off road with 10 yards of concrete, the shop guys thought a Mack transmission, 44 rear axles, camelback was the best. One year they bought Mack's with Fuller Road ranger trannys and several of the guys like them better because they shifted faster and easier. The year they bought 15 Pete's 6 came with Cat and 9 with Cummins. They asked for all Cat engines. Man you had to be careful with 9 and 10 yards of concrete. HEAVY!!! Easy to get dug in if ground is soft. And leaning a little and the tandems on the lean side, the tires would squat down a look as if they had 50 pounds instead of 110. I was lucky. Never had a roll over but I saw several over the years. Too heavy for some places.
@toddgittins56923 жыл бұрын
No rear suspension. It only pivoted.

Thnk you. Although it doesn΄t work always, it΄s a very useful trick, especially when downshifting on uphills, in order to prevent it from stopping and reversing. In such situations, if you are heavy loaded, the brakes are unable to save you.

@Ladylawless8 Dear lord.... The 12 speed TRTXL1070 had an air shift knob on the main stick with HI-LO-N-R. Second stick called the mud stick had just two gears, hi & low, you just used first gear on the main stick with the mud stick in low. later they replaced the stick with a switch on the dash, The transmission in the video is most likely a true Mack twin stick duplex/triple/quad box. That R model has a metal dash which was from 1963-1973 and the END(T)673 + twin stick was an option in an R.

+Rider Life On this video there is not much gears, but on some trucks they have 5 on main and 4 on auxiliary transmission. Some of the gears are similar, but you would have somearound 18-20 in one shifter, so either it goes from door to door and you have over 4feet (1,2m) long transmission or separate transmission and 2 sticks Modern trucks have splitter on front and rear of transmission, but older transmission came from small trucks and it was easier to use two than make a whole new transmission
