I worked as a mate with two of my brothers on charter, fishing boats, running out of Mississippi and Alabama, and we caught the largest and most quantity of large king mackerel (Spanish mackerel is what you call them there, but they are called King mackerel in the Gulf of Mexico.) while fishing overnight tied off to oil rigs on dead cigar minnows. We would catch larger quantities of smaller school size fish in the 8 to 15 pound range trolling during the daytime but nighttime, especially a couple hours before the sun came out seem to be the best time. Fishing around oil rigs structure in the Gulf of Mexico is obviously on the other side of the world from you so it may not be the same in terms of when they bite and where they bite. Most of the people who go fishing in that area fish primarily at night and we have never been able to catch one at night. We only catch them during the daytime so I know your frustration on other fish species and have witnessed the same thing where everybody else does at night except we can’t find any at night. That’s a whole other species and style of fishing.

Those Mack Tuna seem to be the southern hemisphere equivalent of the Little Tunny. Fun to catch on light tackle but terrible table fare. We would keep one every now and then to cut up for bait.

Thanks mate! I use whatever I have on hand. I prefer garfish but haven’t restocked my supply in a while. For strips I use Mack tuna, bonito, dollies, anything that’s tough really 👌

You should try jigging for mackerel at night with large redhead Halco max's. Ive caught probably close to a hundred Spanish at night doing that..

Thanks for the feedback. Only 4 of my last 10 videos have been with a camera man. As you can imagine there will always be an adjustment period when someone new comes to help out and they find their feed shooting fishing. Hopefully you start enjoying the videos more soon 👍🍻
