I got a Mackie ProFX8v2 USB connected mixer over Christmas and decided it was time to review it, and I also figured out how to Mix minus using a single computer as both the interviewing and effects rack device, so I threw in a little tutorial on it with my thoughts. I won't be going over every single feature available on this mixer, that's what their website and documentation is for.
Here's where you can pick one up:

You can certainly do mix minus without USB, and most mixers can do it. You only need a mixer with an AUX/Mon/FX send (whichever its labeled as on your mixer, this one has both Mon and FX which is handy) output. You can send audio from your computer to the mixer through any of the inputs like you would any other audio source, right from the aux jack on your PC into one of the channels. Then send your microphone and any other channel you want through the Aux send into the Mic input on your PC. The biggest downside to this mixer is that it's one of the very few mixers that doesn't have Control Room outputs, which solves your issue with the speakers.

I have the profx10v3 into my Mac to use in parallels. My radio station software only runs on window. I can hear myself through headphones but it’s not recording. I’m also using Voicemeeter Banana to be able to adjust music bed over my segments into the broadcast system. Do you know what could possibly be the problem where it’s not taking the mic into the Mac or windows. Again I can hear the mic works, just not recording anywhere

WOW, It is no wonder your headphones are blowing your ears off, You have that Mixer WAY TOO HIGH, the U on the console is UNITY and that is as high as you should EVER turn it up, especially if you are using speakers, the EQ lights should NEVER, EVER be in the yellow or Red that is over-modulating and not good for mixer or speakers. Louder is not necessarily better, it is just louder. Your use of the mixer is impressive, but your channels should always be at the bottom and raised not at the top and lowered, you will hurt your ears if you turn something on by accident with it that loud otherwise you have a great video and your insight into the FX8v2 is great

He's right here. Mackies use "unity" gain terminology, other makes call it something else. At "unity", the signal level leaving that gain stage is equal to the signal level coming into it. Nothing gained, nothing lost. Unity. To properly adjust gain on this mixer, start with all the input gain pots full down. Put input channel and master faders at unity (U). Speak in your normal show voice into the mic at your usual position, and adjust its input gain up until the signal is PEAKING at around 0 on the meter. Loudest material should top out at around +6. Above that, you start to get into distortion land, and worse, clipping (red). Lower is actually okay. It's a quiet mixer and you can bring it up in post. If you're not getting adequate gain from your mic, move it closer to your mouth, or get a mic with higher sensitivity. You DON'T want to see that meter light up like a Christmas tree though. It looks cool, but that isn't its function. If you have to bring the gain up so much that you hear room noise (computer fans, etc) then you probably just need to pull the mic closer to your mouth. Adjust other input sources in like manner. By the way, it's not an EQ meter. It's a level meter. Has nothing at all to do with EQ.

Maybe you can help me!. I never had this issue with it before.. but now it seems when I have sound playing on pc and I'm recording on mic it's collecting both.. I gave my headset on the "phones" and my mic in mic 1. When I record something it picks up what I'm saying and what I'm listening to in my headphones. How can I disable it from only recording my mic and not what is coming out of the headphones as well?

The ProFX8 is good in principle, bad on quality. I've used one for about 5 years. In that time, all the pots are dirty and cut audio out. Now the faders are broken. So loose on the traces, so they don't work as great. Although a broadcast console is the best, it's not as practical for just podcasting and more expensive. Too bad there's not a affordable quality mixer that one can use.

Hi Tom, thanks for the video. I have a question as I bought this same mixer last month. I have (2) EV ZLX15p's that I channel out of the mains R & L on the back to them to be in stereo. I want to run my (1) EV EKX15sp subwoofer I'm getting this week out of the mixer. Can I run it out to the sub from MON SEND and be able to control the volume from the Mon volume slide to the left of the Main volume slide? It seems I would want to control my Sub's volume from there as it will be separate from the main volume and channel 7/8 volume which I have my laptop running from for playback music. The main and channel 7/8 volume slides work together. Thanks for any help. Take care..

Great vid , did you ever record with the Mackie to a desktop PC ? Lets say win 8 or higher with a daw like "reaper" for example .Im curious about the quality of the recordings and how they would turn out if I buy the unit because I don't use Mac . I cant find a review on youtube of that and things are more in depth like here but just for mac . Also very important question , does the graphic EQ work with the RCA "tape" inputs and can I record that like the mic pre's ?
@TommyCallaway
@TommyCallaway 6 жыл бұрын
I've never recorded to a PC with it - but I've recorded to my Zoomh6, and to my mac with various daws, and the quality is great. And yes, I use the tape inputs to get audio from my headphone jack in my mac to my mixer, and ten USB to go back into the mac and control the volumes separately.

There is actually a stereo graphic EQ, but it's the little 7 band one to the left of the meters, and yes I did call it the wrong thing. Sorry!
@sansaratech
@sansaratech 6 жыл бұрын
Use that equalizer conservatively. This is primarily a live sound mixer, and that EQ is made to tune the mix to the room it's being played in, and control feedback. The frequencies are deliberately selected for these purposes. It's not really engineered for aesthetic tone shaping in a studio setting like a typical graphic equalizer would be. Keep that in mind when using it, and use it sparingly. The EQ pots on the input channels are better suited to tone shaping in a musical production sense. I notice you've only slightly cut the 4k, and that suggests you may have already figured that out about this EQ. So many people misuse this equalizer and it kills their sound.

Tommy or anyone on the threads, I need your help. I have the same mixer and it’s connected to a Windows 10 workstation, with plenty of RAM and resources, via USB. I tried setting everything up like you have there and the audio from the speaker to the rca inputs cracked in and out almost like it was due to over modulation. I then tried a 3.5mm to 1/4 “ TRS breakout cable and plugged it into a channel. I was able to fade the audio in and out and sounded fine. Went to record and the audio from the Skype call was barely audible. I mean low. But, while the call was in progress, the local audio and incoming call audio was fine. I recorded it through the main out to verify it wasn’t OBS. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

How can I can connect my Pro fx8 v2 to pro tools daw on my macbook?
@TommyCallaway

+Rm Exclusive set the input and output on your daw to the USB device when it's plugged in to your MacBook. If you have one of the new MacBooks with no ports you'll need an adapter probably.

So...how are you capturing/recording the audio mix? The Zoom recorder?

Hello Tommy. I really like the review you've done... I just had some questions about the unit. The first is just an overall question, which bitrate does this use for the USB output to the PC? I'm hoping for 196kbps as the focusrite scarlett systems use.. I'm overhauling a audio switch system in a party / panel room at a bowling/arcade/put put place that has an few conventions per year, one is a pop culture convention, CrystalCoastCon that's coming up this month. I've been tasked with upgrading the dinosaur they have now. I'm looking for some features that this mixer has. I want something I can easily show the owner how to use but we also want to be able to have advanced features. Like ability to mix a skype call / music on the pc and have it come through the overhead speakers. We are planning on skyping in to the "Star Trek Original Series Set Tour" in Ticonderoga NY and want the skype call to sound as if we were there. I'll be using the GTD 4 channel UHF Diversity system, doing the 4 XLR outputs. I was also wondering if you had seen a smaller unit that does the same thing? Except I need one that has a way to mix the levels on the PC, similar to focusrite scarlett's system. I have a karaoke cab in Wilmington NC that at the moment is using a GTD 2 mic UHF system via 1/4 output and the receiver is inside my custom center console plugged into a 1/8 jack on the old USB Sound Blaster X-Fi pro 5.1 system.. There's a buzz coming through using the method and I have 2 ground loop isolation devices in place between the mic and the sound card, as well as between the sound card and my car stereo head unit. I've also switched to a pure sine wave power inverter for clean electrical power like you have in your house. The mic still has buzzing noises, which lead me to think switching to another mixer and XLR outputs/preamps might fix the problem. I'd like to switch to the same 4 mic system I'm using at the convention, using either 3 or 4 of the mics depending on the size of the mixer and if it can be controlled via the pc... #karaokecabwilm #CrystalCoastCon

+Joshua Price the mackie can control line in volume from the pc. I haven't found an acceptable smaller mixer yet but I haven't been looking for one..

Tommy, can it control line in volume for all the channels ? Or just the overall line input? I thought the mixer didn't have motors on the levers for changing the mixing options...What's the input hz/bitrate on the usb input/output btw? Like the Scarlett from FocusRite is 96hz/128kbps

+Joshua Price it can control line in for all the channels separately and as a whole. Maybe I'm not sure what you mean?

I'm wondering if changing the volumes via a computer would work with all the line inputs separately...As I'd rather be able to control the inputs from my laptop which is on a stand, instead of reaching under my vehicles flooring every time I wanted to adjust some input. Specially when I deal with random strangers singing in my karaoke cab that either can't sing in tune or control their volume...

Sorry for taking so long to answer. Skype call was on USB. Music was on Tape level (headphone out on mac) - sound was set to maximum in the computer, and controlled via the mixer.

Hey same here! You have a great setup. Mixers have always been daunting to me. I'm still using an AT2020 with a USB converter cable. Been wanting to get a mixer and a proper mic. Yours seems to take in really nice bass levels.

+Yuubi Z thanks! Yeah the USB makes learning and playing with the mixer a lot easier than alternatives. You will have to buy a few cables and adapters if it's your first one (like me). It's worth it, but don't negate what software can do for you - adobe audition rocks. Check out my tutorial on making your voice sound better with adobe audition before spending too much money.

I'll give it a look! I'm prepared for extra cables and even less desk space. Someday I have to redo my cable management. Maybe I'll make getting a mixer my day to make the underside of my desk prettier. What kind of mic do you have? It sounds real crisp.

Note to all singers thinking of buying this - it has a very poor effects settings (16) on the vocals - very unprofessional sounding reverb & echo etc - wish I knew this before buying it a few months back ! PDH (UK)

I am extremely disappointed with the Mackie mixer profx8 v2 I purchased 3 years ago. Despite its initial good quality, the durability of the product is severely lacking. Recently, the mixer malfunctioned for the second time and required repairs. To my surprise, when I contacted customer service, I was informed that the product has been discontinued and that spare parts also discontinued and are no longer available. This is unacceptable, as the mixer was only launched 5 years ago and should not have reached the end of its life span so quickly. The fact that there are no longer any spare parts available to replace the malfunctioning parts only adds to the frustration. It is ok if the product discontinue, but spare part discontinue? It is big NO NO!!! I can only dump my mixer for only 3 years!
