Before updating my air M1 I looked up several videos about newer versions of MacOS and the difference between each and their effect on productivity of the machine. At the end I am here with Sonoma for 2 days already and Monterey was much faster at everything, be it opening tabs on browser or opening application windows and so on. I am a bit upset that the tests in your video didn't comply with reality. And for my unluck, the system deleted the version in the syslog of the previous macOS, so I don't know what version to download to downgrade 😢

Many thanks. I've sought a speed test like this for a long time! A battery life test across MacOS would be a very high value video. You would need to assure each OS is done indexing (if it is a fresh installation). The test could be an automated, repeating web browsing script or video on loop.

For something like a 4gb macbook air the recommended one is actually 10.7, mainly because of +1gb extra ram which allows to actually use it without running into swap. The extra gig comes from lower vram allocation, and its perfectly fine because you dont need 1.5gb for a freakin HD 4000

Some scored High & Others Scored Low > LOTS of factors to consider: Mac Intel or Apple Silicon? , HDD, SSD or NVme? , RAM Memory and Speed in MHz?, File Type Volume: Mac OS Journal or APFS, Which Mac OS version is "Fully Optimized" for that specific computer or the software running? , Processor Speed? , External or Internal peripheral devices connected, such as Mouse and Keyboards, may or may not be 100% compatible or fully optimized, Enhanced graphical effects and animations on the newer versions may slow down older computers., and so much more! Monterey because it was designed to be an update to speed up macOS and fine tune some things that the huge update Big Sur may have broken, and is still receiving software updates until September. It is also newer than Big Sur, resulting in better compatibility.

Ummm this is kinda irresponsible to do these awesome tests and not mention which Mac you own? Is it a 2020 M1 Macbook Air or the Retina? How much Ram and Hard Drive space is on your computer? Sonoma ruined my macbook air m1 2020 battery. Literally I was having a normal battery which lasted all day with just one charge and after the update my battery has deteriorated within 3 days. Now it lasts only 3 hours. I will try to downgrade to Big Sur. I cannot believe they did this to my laptop. Its impossible that it naturally got ruined so fast within 3 days. I am so silly to upgrade, regretting so much.. Please stay away from these upgrades unless you want your macbook to be ruined. Check other source people say to stay away from these major updates

I have a question I would greatly appreciate an answer for. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) which I used for music production, running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. It was the most powerful MacBook I could acquire that could run 32-bit plugins. I no longer have the need to run 32-bit plugins or programs, but I would appreciate knowing the best OS to upgrade to. I have an iPhone XR running iOS 16.6, and each successive update is undoubtedly causing some unresponsiveness. My theory is each device has an optimal OS, balancing speed and features. What should I update my MacBook to?

My recommendation do update anything. Monterey is the best optimized for intel. Venture and Sonoma are battery and RAM intensive

Is it possible that you have enabled filevault in Big Sur? The boot time is too slow.

I didn't modify any settings, and I believe FileVault is on by default on all operating systems.

@iAppleOrchard No it's not on by default. You select it if you want during the initial setup. (Or afterwords at any time in settings). If you enable filevault it causes this delay during boot. In any case, I am just throwing some ideas trying to figure out why the boot time in Big Sur was so much slower.

Hey kiddo, “fastest” has a lot to do with which model/chip Mac you’re using and which OS is most optimized for which chipsets. i.e. Sonoma would probably be faster on more recent macs, so that’s worth testing too. I’ve found that typically about one (or two at most) release after the OS that came with your mac will be fastest on it.

if you havent bought it yet, i wouldn't recommend it, 2019 mac pro used intel processor. getting a mac with the m1 processor is a huge step up, and will not become outdated nearly as fast as a mac with an intel chipset

@@dimakonstanta1868 macOS Sonoma 14.4, the latest version has much better ram management than any other Sonoma version, 3.9 GB for me. I would expect the next 2 updates to help lower it even more. Also keep in mind that this is my primary OS and I do have stuff run when starting up.
