From the rainforests of Ecuador, I use a Canon 100mm macro and MP-E 65mm macro lens to demonstrate how I get clean, studio-like photos of insects in the field. For more of my photography, check out:

I do exactly the same thing here in Brazil. That's nice! Here we have species so colorful and so unlikely that you would not even have imagined it. It's the macro photography haven (that is, all of South America!). Great video! Keep it up!

From time to time, I come back and watch your videos. Despite the fact that I make reptile videos, I don't usually watch a lot of animal based channels. However, every one of your videos is so well made, entertaining, and educational. I think my first video was with the Taylor Swift Scorpion and you only had 3k subs at the time. But I really want to see something new from you. I hope you get something else out soon!

So cool! I need to invest in an actual macro lens, my set up is really scrappy but it works. It's an old Pentax 35mm film camera prime lens on a reverse ring on my Sony a6000 and if I want more magnification I put on some extension tubes. Everything's manual haha. Love the vids keep em coming 👏 👏 👏

So cool! I have seen some setups like that which can take better super-macro shots than my MP-E 65mm. I need to try it out some day!

BTW a lot of cameras won't sync to the flash at 1/250th and you'll need to slow down a bit (unless it has, and you use, a high-speed sync mode which reduces flash power). Your 70D just makes it. Also a 1Dx mkII as mentioned in the overlap has a lot bigger pixels so will have less magnification. One trick people can use to go beyond the usual macro lens' 1x limit is to add a lens like the Canon 250D or Raynox DCR250 to the front of the lens, they're a lot cheaper than the MPE65. Plus you used manual flash power rather than automatic with some compensation?

This is one of the best macro videos I have seen as, as far as I concerned he does nothing wrong. I think though he could do a better job explaining why those settings. I would also use the lean in method with the 100mm as well. I have both of these lenses and I find I get better focus with lean back and forth than the auto focus on the 100mm.

Very instructive, thanks. One question, which video camera you used for filming this?? I ask because that weevil looked very crisp when focused and with good field of depth
@TheJungleDiaries
@TheJungleDiaries 7 жыл бұрын
Most of the filming of me during tutorial was done on my second camera body, the Canon 70D. Other than that, I use my Canon 1DX mark ii. The close weevil footage on the leaf and in-hand were filmed at 60fps and with the 100mm macro's image stabilizer on, which helps it look smoother when slowed down. The crisp and focused is largely due to the 100mm macro lens, but the 1Dx does do a fantastic job of 4k slow motion video compared to other Canons like the 6D or 5D mk iii

Good video but I find it so odd to shoot on a white background. The end video shots of it on a leaf looked so nice. But maybe that's just a personal preference of mine. If I do have to shoot indoors I bring some plants in with me to place the insect on.

Everybody loves freedom even the insects. You are hurting the insects. Don't do that. Take photos without damaging the environment/nature. We don't have a right to do any damage to nature.
@janhenrik4170
@janhenrik4170 6 жыл бұрын
Insects don't experience pain or any sort of feelings imagine them as robots. Holding them or grabbing them won't hurt them and they are protected by their chitin. Just avoid holding on to their limbs since you will likely pull them out. They shouldnt be killed/damaged for the species sake and a healthy ecosystem.
