You have inspired me for years and now I'm so happy that you stumbled on my channel and in turn have been inspired by my videos. This video was absolutely beautiful from beginning to end, please do more of these :D I can tell how much you enjoyed being in nature and that you had a special connection to your surroundings, macro photography helps you see the world in a way that you never saw it before and causes a deep appreciation for how beautiful the world is! As I mentioned before, I started my channel because of something you said in one of your older videos where you encouraged others to do so and it has been so much fun! You are a sweetheart to mention me, thank you so much! I rented the 85mm 1.2 once for a portrait shoot and because of your inspiring channel, those remain some of my favorite photos, and the bluebonnet on my channel banner was taken with the 85mm like yours.

The empty aphids are called mummies, it's caused by minute parasitic wasps that eat the aphid from inside and then leave the aphid shell once fully grown... In a way it's like in the Alien movies :)

Thank you so much for making this video, I love macro & close up photography. I don't have a macro lens but I use my 24mm with close up filters and sometimes my 50 mm lens to photograph flowers.
@gray_days_4 жыл бұрын
Bit late and don't know if anyone has mentioned yet, but those 'cocoons' you mentioned near the ants and aphids are actually what are known as 'aphid mummies'. They are effectively the shed skin of the aphids that they emerge from as they get bigger! In your case if they are particularly hardened-looking and have a big hole out the back, usually the aphid was eaten alive inside and a parasitic wasp came out instead! The tiny wasp had laid its eggs inside the aphid while it was alive, and then they leave behind only the shed skin as evidence when they emerge! Those wasps themselves are great to photograph, they usually have quite long black antennae and big eyes, though to the untrained eye they just look like small flies until closer inspection. Cheers for the great video! Just getting into macro myself

As someone who has spent a number of years doing (mainly failing) at macro photography, a flash makes all the difference - especially if you diffuse it. To get more than a slice of eye on focus you need to be at like f/8 or f/11. At macro distances you still get a blurred background. Beautiful shots though, well done
@IreneRudnyk5 жыл бұрын
I would definitely try a flash or maybe led light next time.

Another good one Irene. I use my tripod with the head mounted to the bottom of the stem, with the head and the camera mounted upside down for low level macro photos. I use the Canon APP on my cell phone to display and trigger the camera (at 77 I don't bend to work low any more). If your tripod has 1/4-20 threaded stud on the bottom of it's stem, you can mount the head on either end of it. Upside down photos are easy to rotate with Photoshop or any photo processing software.

I would love to see you shoot some portraits with the 100mm macro & talk about how it differs from your go to 85mm :)
@LieslHuddleston5 жыл бұрын
Yes, same! It's a beautiful portrait lens too! 85mm is still more flattering on facial features, but the 100mm also renders skin soft and feminine and with dreamy bokeh which would suit Irene's style perfectly!
@HEREONOUTBAILEY5 жыл бұрын
I’m on the fence about also buying this lens. I’ve been told by several other photographers that the 100mm has a “clinical” look to it & they prefer the 85mm. I would love to know what you think :)
@IreneRudnyk5 жыл бұрын
I did take a few pictures of my mom and I was super impressed with the lens. Maybe I'll rent it out again for a portrait shoot :)
@HEREONOUTBAILEY5 жыл бұрын
Liesl Huddleston Really? I thought 105mm would be more flattering due to the compression? I read somewhere it’s the focal length Surgeons use to photograph parts of the face as it’s the most accurate:)

Great lens! I enjoy mine greatly. Don't be afraid to get close, and use higher F numbers. The depth of field get shallower the closer you get with any F-stop. You are off to a good start so keep going.
@IreneRudnyk5 жыл бұрын
I am thinking of trying it out with some additional lighting next, maybe a flash or a small LED, then I can shoot higher f stops
@jimstone5 жыл бұрын
Irene, a flash is a great choice. I shoot manual on camera and adjust to darken background a bit, then turn on the flash and adjust output down to add fill. I use LED to aid in focusing. Diffuse the flash output to soften the light. Most focusing is done by rocking forward and backward. (back button focus). It does take practice, but it's a blast! Enjoy...

Greetings from France. For a first try, this is great, Irene! I do like what you are doing in this shooting, which is more proxyphotography than pure macrophotography. It leads to soft and poetic pics, instead of anatomic frightful views of fly eyes, which are one of the most popular subjects in macrophoto... Do other tries, I'm sure we all will appreciate. By the way, I also suggest you to make portraits of your mum, who looks incredibly young and pretty!
