I first saw Glynis Johns in the 1954 classic, "Personal Affair" with Gene Tierney and Leo Genn. She was brilliant and I fell in love with her instantly. Thereafter, I endeavoured to watch as many films and plays that she starred in. I have never been disappointed at her performances: her great beauty, her brilliant and versatile acting ability, her singing, her dancing. She turns magical 100 on 05 October 2023. I shall try desperately hard to send her a birthday wish and blessing to mark this wonderful milestone. Long live beautiful, beautiful Glynis!

Remarkably, Glynis is still going strong at 95, and her voice is as special as ever. So do I. Probably every movie requires some suspension of disbelief, but there are limits to what each member of the audience will tolerate. With "Mad about Men," the only suspension of disbelief is the existence of mermaids. Beyond that one point, everything is easily believable. With many "modern" movies, you also have impractical costumes, impossible and often capricious superpowers, thrown in with pointless wall-to-wall explosions and other loud noises, needless destruction of private property, and merry homicides. That's cinematic junk food. I'm definitely "old school" in my movie preferences.

Mermaiding is an art form for which, sadly enough, most filmmakers have no respect. It's more than just a costume. A professional mermaid uses her (or his) whole body for swimming as the mermaid is emulating the movement of a cetacean such as a dolphin or whale. Whenever I see a movie "mermaid" using her legs to kick forward, I can't help but groan that the studio could have and should have invested in a little training for the actor or perhaps a real professional mermaid.

Good observation. It's called retroactive continuity, or "retconning," for short. When makers of a movie or TV show find that something in the present installment of a series contradicts something in an earlier installment, they either try to explain it away, or they just pretend it never happened. When "Dallas" decided to bring Bobby Ewing back from the dead, they pretended that an entire season of "Dallas" was just someone's dream. Politicians and "journalists" of the "news" media do it all the time.

You're referring to "Mister Peabody and the Mermaid," which was released the same year as "Miranda" (1948). It's an absolutely delightful movie. In the movie, the mermaid (Ann Blyth) has no dialog. In the years since I've watched it, I've learned to appreciate minimalist dialog, so I'll have to watch it again. P.S. Both "Mister Peabody and the Mermaid" and "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" were filmed at Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida at the same time. Because the main characters had to stay in costume, tourists were surprised to see Frankenstein's monster eating lunch with a mermaid.

@@queenmedesa The way I understand it, the movie print you can watch on archive.org is much clearer than the print they allow for downloading. I believe that's the one I downloaded for this channel. You can see it more clearly at the following URL: archive.org/details/MadAboutMen1954

Sadly, not even close to "Miranda". The wonderful supporting cast replaced by cardboard cutouts here. Only Margaret Rutherford delivers.

Hi Eddie, I'm living as a male-to-female transgender, something that my own parents had withheld from me for many years by means of mind-altering prescribed medication. I was 32 years of age when I saw "Splash" at my local cinema, literally with my extremely fertile imagination, the woman inside me came to the surface and seeing through Daryl Hannah's eyes I 'was' her in the film, both in her shoes and swimming in her tail as "Madison" the mermaid. My Dad was once a R.S.M, they will and therefore always shall have the last word, Try arguing with someone like that Eddie, especially what I wanted to be, so it was 'silence the ranks' like the original Hans Christian-Andersen fairy tale. "Welcome to the Statue of Liberty" a great monument that has come to symbolise hope for naked women everywhere, botchy balls!"
