What a treat indeed. An Alec Guinness film that I had not yet seen. As usual he is superb. In addition I get Glynis Johns who I absolutely adore. She always elevated the actors around her. She and Alec play off each other brilliantly.

An impoverished and ambitious son of a washerwoman ( Alec Guinness) works his way up the ranks of society by any means necessary! A really good rags to riches story deftly done with the talent of Mr Guinness and his leading ladies Glynis johns, Valerie Hobson and petula Clark-this is a very good 👍 film-this gentle comedy deserves the credit it needs and I give it five ⭐️ stars for it-btw -hi. Glynis johns-bless her -lived to be 100 years old and died at that age on January 4,2024-rip to an extraordinary actress-she’ll never be forgotten by anyone who adored her-good movie to watch! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

The football match was actually Maidenhead united V Maidstone United in the Corinthean League fixture. The 22 footballers got £2 each for being extras in the movie, they filmed for several hours but were only the final film cut for under 2 minutes. Later Petula Clarke kicked off for their real match. Filmed at Maidenhead's York ground with pottery kilns painted in by Ealing studios. I couldn't find out who played the footballer Ted Callear. His part was uncredited as he never spoke. This was Petula's FIRST onscreen kiss !

@@cc1k435 as you know, radio was the tv back in the 20's & 30's and movies were transitioning from silent to talkies and actors were trying to make the transition. a lot of actors didnt make it, and a few of them did, but for those just coming into the business, they were the ones to cut their teeth on the new media, and for producers and directors alike. its like they had to learn all over again how to put together another movie with synchronized sound tracks, so alot of movies had a very amiturish feel about them, buck rodgers, the hornet, the shadow............ they all went through the same levels polishing a movie can and every time a "gone with the wind" type movie came out, up went the level of production ....................

Not quite true. He looked quite young in David Lean's Great Expectations in 1946. Two or three years later, with some make-up, he aged a good 30 years to play Fagan in Lean's Oliver Twist and "never looked back" upon his youth. Speaking of actors who looked 50 at birth, Sid James comes to mind. Also, veteran character actor Ian Wolfe seemed to pop out of the womb carrying a silver tray and asking, "Will that be all, Madam?".
