Another commenter mentioned The Old Guard (starring Charlize!) and I second that but also you mentioned it looked like they just drove a truck into the ground at the Nux death scene and they literally DID. You should watch the behind the scenes. The stunt driver has been the same through the entirety of the Mad Max movies and this was kind of his final stunt before he retired. The shot was accomplished with a dummy sitting in the driver seat and the stunt driver driving from the other side of the truck. When it turned over, George Miller was watching from a screen in a tent and he literally ran outside because of how realistic it looked, he thought his friend had just crashed on his head! Luckily, the stunt man emerged unscathed and it is honestly one of the most impressive moments in stunt history for me. Also you guys got a new follower!

1:00:58 Funny you should say that; There wasnt really a script, it was all just storyboards.

The scene where Furiosa shouts after knowing she will never come back home as she promised to her mother is so powerful. It was actually a Charlize idea and Miller did it

I heard about that. It was the best choice imo, shows how well Theron understood the character.

The vehicles in this were required to have backups for different reasons. When they filmed this it was in both Australia and in Namibia.

Just to clarify a couple things. Yes most of those scenes were done practically. The monster truck hopping in front of the big rig ACTUALLY happened. That jump happened, just minus the big rig being there. That was added in later. The Big Rig being flipped by Nux actually happened. There was actually a stuntman in that bigrig when it flipped. They had ONE try at it. And then they actually drove the musical truck into the back of it. And shot it all in like 2000fps. That explosion of the fuel truck? They actually blew that truck up by itself, and then composited it into the scene. So they did A LOT of really well done compositing, which is actually beautiful, because as long as you do the compositing well, everything is TECHNICALLY practical, just kind of layered on top of each other to make one shot. There are like 5 different videos on youtube about the practical effects and the vehicles, check them out!. Another thing regarding Tom Hardy not understanding the film, is basically because of how it was shot. The movie is effectively a 2 hour movie cut into like 5000 2 second shots. And they were ALL done in those 2 second increments. "Action...2secs...cut!" Imagine doing that like 5000 times. It can be disorientating and you can really lack any kind of real focus on what exactly is happening. Only until the editor puts it all together does it make sense.

I figured they were real stunts, but the fact that they were composited in post is genius! That very much lent to how real everything looked. The high frame rate is also an interesting tidbit; at times a lot of the action looked almost "sped up" to me (not in a bad way, it gave a lot of kinetic energy to the scenes). About the Tom Hardy being confused thing, yeah that makes complete sense. The action in this movie is done in a way that would be extremely difficult to choreograph, set up and shoot for extended takes, so filming it in short takes one at time was for the best, but I could definitely see how that would be disorienting for the actors.

George Miller apparently has the next one written and ready to go, unfortunately Furiosa didn’t do well enough at the box office so it’s go ahead for filming is in question. I wish more people went to see Furiosa when it was released in the theaters instead of waiting to watch it at home.

I'm unreasonably upset that Furiosa underperformed at the box office (I say even though I didn't see it, but only because I wanted to react to it on KZbin). Really hoping that Mad Max 3 gets a chance to be made at some point.

You should definitely watch the special features cause the stunts on how they did all this is fucking brilliant

If you want to check out Charlize Theron in an arguably even more badass role, check out Atomic Blonde (2017). She plays an MI6 agent, and its done by the director of John Wick. It has arguably one of the best "one take" action scenes ever in a movie.

I've heard so many good things about Atomic Blonde but for some reason I've just never got around to seeing it. Will definitely check it out. I'm a sucker for complicated one take shots.
