@@thetankhunter100 given the modern % that is general you are looking at around 702 crank HP. With the average loss of 17%. Which would be impressive given the time. But even then to go along with the post above you, the Dodge Hellcat/TRX Ram both use a 717hp motor, and both are also super charged, which would be a 1 to 1 equivalent.

The Ford 427 SOHC had 616 horsepower with a single four barrel carb, and over 650 with two four barrel carbs in 1964, all without a supercharger. It was also one of the only motors to be banned by Nascar. I am not familiar with when the events in this movie supposedly took place, but it is possible to have had a engine above 600 horsepower. But in a dystopian future that specific motor would have been incredibly rare to find.

We can all argue which Mad Max is the best, but this one ultimately is my favorite. It just has this wonderful sense of loneliness. A lost society trying to hold on to their civilization. "600hp through the wheels". Pretty cool that they phrased it that way. Even though there are a few little fantasy movie quirks regarding the engine there was someone involved with the writing that was clearly a gearhead. Especially considering the age of the movie. Nowadays I'm sure plenty of people know that wheel horsepower is what matters as there are chassis dynos everywhere but back in the late 70's I'm guessing that was a relatively obscure term.

Fun fact: The plastic yellow bucket in engine compartment was put there to hide the electric motor used to drive the fake blower drive belt. The Weiand blower and scoop was real but never installed to work. The engine was just a standard V-8. Also the shift knob with the blower on/off switch was a movie prop. The shifter was from a big rig truck the red knob is a selector switch to go into higher gear numbers only used on big rig manual transmissions. Blowers cannot be turned on and off with a switch. Everybody always talks about how Mel Gibson accidentally caught his jacket in the supercharger belt (0.57) while revving it and I know that was just a mistake on the actors part but I always thought it was foreshadowing that the only thing that monster of a car was going to be used for was rage and vengeance. Almost poetic.

Is it just me or does the interceptor look way better in part 2. I just love the apocalyptic look it has with the modified fuel tanks on the rear. Plus l love how they made the engine in part 2 sound more corroded because of the dirty fuel he’s using.

I often wondered...when Mad Max came out, almost no car on the market had an aero nose like the false one they added to the Falcon XB for this movie. By the time MM2 came out, the first cars with aero fronts were making their way to the mainstream, so the Interceptor looses its aero front right at the start of the movie. Was this on purpose?

This car is a FORD Falcon XB sedan, 351 V8 engine, probably a 1974 model. Max is seen driving this car before he goes "Mad", and takes off in the black Interceptor. Like Big Bopper, this car was also originally a Victoria Police Interceptor

“She’s the lasta the V8s!” ….. “600 horsepower through the wheels with the blower!” The MFP garage mechanic, “Barry,” is one of the more under-appreciated characters in the film. It was the details of his garage-scene dialog here, introducing Max to the supercharged V8 MFP Pursuit Special, that helped create the apparent invincibility of the car. Not to mention its legendary carry-over status in Mad Max 2 (a/k/a The Road Warrior).
