Hi everyone. This video is a few years old now, and I still get comments on this video and other videos from 2013-15, from people asking me to draw their MLP OC. I am a self employed freelance artist. I don't just make MLP stuff. If you are interested in a commission, visit my main youtube page and watch my trailer video. That has all the information you need about how to get a commission. Please do not ask for a drawing in the youtube comments.

_* My thoughts:_ _* Merida's redesign does indeed _*_look_*_ like a Disney princess, but it doesn't suit her wild and Brave style. A characters design should be based off their personality. I, for one dislike redesigns, they change the way a character is presented in the fact of their emotions. Merida before looked wild, and untamed. Now, she still has that wild touch, but seems more like a delicacy rather than what she's was in the first place._

I dislike Merida's redesign for 2 reasons. 1 - As a tomboy myself I can't see Merida ever dressing like that, it is so impractical. Nor can I see her wearing that much makeup, or any makeup. 2 - I look a lot like Merida and my inner 7 year old just cries "Why doesn't Disney think I'm good enough to be a princess" and I feel sad for girls that identify more with Merida than the other princesses. Tomboys can want to be princesses to!

ladywyvern13 Wrong. Merida is not a tomboy. You have so many wrong points that you have posted in your comment. According to story board artists, it would've been easier if she was made into a tomboy. But no! She is a GIRL too, she just doesn't like the things that comes with being a girl! @@TuberoseKisser Pocahontas is a chief’s daughter. It’s literally stated several times she’d become the next chief of her tribe. Mulan is literally the only princess who got her crown through single handedly destroying an entire army and ending a war. But Pocahontas if anything was the first heroine in her story, she STOPPED a war and created peace between her people and his. Her only flaw is sadly despite Disney making it clear several times before it came out it wasn’t going to be a retelling of the actual story of Matoaka, but not everyone saw it that way.

The main reason im a little ticked off about the redesign is that... along with many other princess re-designs, the main thing that is added are things like sparkles, makeup, etc. And thats perfectly fine- as you said, its added to fit the theme. BUT, when they added that to Merida, it took away from her old design and personality- as her being rough and crazy and brave. Personally, I dislike that, because Merida usually is the one who stands out through the princesses, being considered more of the laid-back and courageous type (not implying that other princesses arent courageous). Overall, I think it wasnt the best choice to change her design, but it had good reasons too. (sorry for spelling errors- english isnt my native language)

I think that Merida's original design showed who she was, brave, wild, full of courage ect. The new design has made her look slim, dainty and not as strong as the original design. I think they did this to appeal to the kids, as a princess is in their view, supposed to be slim, pretty and not one to fight. Merida is the exact opposite. This design doesn't represent who she is.

Character redesigns can either be good or bad depending on the reason behind them. If a characters appearance changes as a result of personal growth or progression within their universe or story then I considder it a good thing because its all part of the characters natural evolution. But if they are changed merely to fit a certain mold then It becomes an act of utter stupidity. ( or a cheap marketing ploy ) And takes away from what makes a character unique.

I personally think the reason why people rage about Merida's new design is that she isn't MEANT to look like the other princesses with makeup and a beautiful perfect face. She's a tomboy character, who wants to break tradition and live by her own rules. In the movie, she doesn't act like a damsel in distress waiting for a prince to save her, SHE'S the one doing the saving! And then she gets a redesign that makes her look like less of the character she once was and it annoys everyone because she shouldn't look like every other Disney princess. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Why isn't Nala from The Lion King a part of the Disney Princess line? Does the Disney Princess line only allow humans so they can sell dresses and dollies? I was never into playing dress up or with dolls as a little girl but loved my stuffed animals. If Disney were to include Nala to the Di$ney Prince$$ line, they could mass produce countless Nala plushies and accessories to go with her. Not all items in the Disney princess line are toys at all. I've seen regular clothes (slap Nala's mug onto a few T-shirts with the phrase "Queen of the Jungle"), furniture, etc.

I must say, because of what they have been doing to all the characters they have deemed 'Princesses' I am actually AFRAID of what's going to happen soon. Disney was planning to make another Hawaiian movie called Moana. I am afraid they are going to completely ruin the Hawaiian culture by making her have sparkles and makeup like they did in the rest of the Disney Princesses. Females never wore makeup on Hawaii until women of America came to the islands, through Imperialism, and forced the Hawaiians to change their ways of living to fit the ways of America. So, it honestly does make me scared for that movie.

I'm not saying I'm completely enraged at Disney for twisting this character, but I'm not ok with it either. Merida was suppose to represent being who you are. This message let's female kids know that you don't have to be completely covered in makeup, or get a boob job to be pretty. Be who you are and do what you want. The redesign completely ruins that message. Then again, lots of parents don't want their kids to have a princess portrayed as a "rebel" or "without class". I know, I know, I know, that sounds completely idiotic, but it's just how people are. I agree that it's annoying, but we can't really do anything about it.

I agree with what you said about changing what the character represents. I for one was PISSED when they did this to Pocahontas. She always represented a sense of simplicity, always so natural and true to herself. So when Disney slapped a ton of jewels and sparkles and makeup on her, I got mad as Hell. I don't have a problem with Disney doing this to the princesses that are actually known for their sparkly fashions, but they should have left Pocahontas and Merida alone. neither one of them is about getting dolled up.
@ZGuy0fSci10 жыл бұрын
and to a point Molan? (lol) While being a 'princess' is a part of her position as China's savoir and her likely position gain, she is not just about getting dolled, though with her kimono she is pretty-fiable, (lol) But again, perhaps a 'true to form'/'Return to Form' move would be in order? To ask, if seeing them removed of the bullshit fake-feminist 'Sparkly' crap, Rather to be seen as them as real-world and not so pretty,meh effeminate.... but as actualist real-world characters of grit and hard work or reality, along with as much alongside the Men of and in their lives they owe very much a good degree of their success (if indeed their LIVES) to, it might be nice? *"Never a shiny 'Princess' if not for the stalwart Knight, and never a kingdom if not for his sturdy shield. If not for & by his Fortitude all else is for Nought."* Perhaps its time we honor those MEN & Women alike that fight for the right, and cut the effeminate "Princess" bullcrap out a peg? ;'P (after all, It was "True Grit" that got Disney its fame for its greatest works, not 'Sparkles'. I agree! Pocahontas is my favorite aside Rapunzel and that’s what I love about her. Her outfit only consisted of a deerskin she made sexy even with a more realistic body and her only accessories were her mother’s necklace and a tribal tattoo. Nothing else, she doesn’t even wear makeup or have another deerskin. And yet her hair is so beautiful and flowy. It’s because of her super NATURAL beauty why John Smith fell in love her at first sight. And he knew he was supposed to kill any “savages” he ran into, but his entire mindset changed just by merely looking at her. That’s how beautiful she was! But now her outfits are so random and dumb, including her skintone being made bronze to whitewash her. Even in some posters they kinda recycled her hideous ballgown from the sequel (which isn’t even canon considering how much hate it got) and changed some minor details to make it look like a completely different dress. I think what I hate most is in most Disney princess posters, aside from her normally being on the end, she’s almost always serious or frowning instead of smiling. Its like she’s supposed to be a genderbent Kocuom instead. She literally has a playful and free spirit! She’s a bit of a goofball if anything, that’s why John Smith fell for her is because she had the same personality as himself! I even made a dress from a different Indigenous tribe for Pocahontas and it looks so awesome and waay more authentic than what Disney crapped out. Literally the only other outfit I loved was her winter outfit in the sequel, especially with the shawl she wears! My personal favorite part is she’s actually wearing boots because she was always barefoot in the original while he never took his off except in one scene. It kinda contrasted even more how different they were but that’s why they fell in love with each other!

I have to agree. In my own opinion she is a tomboy and loves getting into the action. She wouldn't think twice about leaving the house without makeup. She is strong and her own leading lady. She doesn't need a man or Prince. I realize the original looks of Cinderella and snow and all of the original princess had them as natural beauties with little to no makeup. And then disney decided to amp them up. I don't think re-amping for the new generation is ok. But not when you completely redesign them. Cinderella kept her blue Tiana kept her green. But Merida and Mulan almost got a completely different look and color scheme.

I am against the idea of an artist's original work being taken and distorted just to fit what some select people decided was marketable, but this change is very very minimal, so I do believe it is being blown out of proportions. The only differences I see is a lighter colored dress with golden patterns on it that look really nice, but the core personnality of the character remains the same and I feel her general look still gives off that personnality. I don't change my personnality when I change clothes in the morning. I don't see why her personnality would be negatively altered because she's wearing a different dress. But honestly, I feel the only person who has the right to be really offended over this change is the original artist, or artists, that came up with Merida for the movie. We're just outsiders, people who work with art or not. We are not in the artist's head. We don't know what every tiny detail symbolises and what upsets them or not. I mean, I've been drawing for years and coming up with hundreds of characters and I dress them in certain ways just because I think it looks cool. It doesn't have to mean anything. This situation doesn't have to mean anything. People are just giving too much meaning to something they don't really have a right to give meaning to.
@leighbennett27969 жыл бұрын
I don't think the issue is so much in the coloring of the dress or the elaborate gold design but rather they slimmed down her waist as well as her face, lowered the neck line, and tightened the dress to hug her curves more dramatically. This to me seems to be a real issue because it once again leans more toward the unrealistic image that disney is continuing, my favorite part about Merida was the fact that she looked like someone who could exist someone I could relate to physically, emotionally, and situational. This change not only affects the the way girls see her but more so how they see themselves, and changing it shows and teaches them that if you're like the original Merida it's not good enough they should look more like the second.

I'm sorry...I'm a little lost here as to what you're trying to argue, Mad Munchkin. You pointed out time and time again that Merida's redesign wasn't the issue, but then you say that the problem is how she looks? I mean, I _think_ what you were trying to get across is that no matter what a Disney princess looks like, they shouldn't have to be changed to be deemed "marketable". If that's what you're trying to say, then I get it completely. Little girls (and boys too...I guess) shouldn't see being pretty, just like a Disney princess, is possible because you put on a sparkly dress. They shouldn't have to redesign any character to make her (or him) marketable to the public. However, your argument doesn't address the problem at hand: that, yes, it's upsetting that they redesigned Merida. Yes, it's an insult thrown into the animators' faces, that the work they put out couldn't be sold the way it was. But the problem is that they're essentially telling little girls (and boys) that, using Merida as an example, even though you can be an incredibly badass character and do all these amazing things, nobody's going to like you unless you put on a sparkly dress and makeup. They're telling little girls that they, just like the redesigned character, _aren't good enough_ the way they are. So, while Disney is already telling the animators that the princess isn't marketable to the public just because she doesn't fit the ideals of a Disney princess, they're also telling little girls to basically do the same thing that they did to the princess, and neither of those things is okay

Unicorn Films That is so true, and I completely agree with what you are saying, the very fact that they changed Merida's physical appearance to better suet the wide demographic of young girls (and boys) looking to buy these things is ridiculous. I like Merida the way she was before, because the film isn't about looks or being pretty or anything like that. It's also set in the dark ages so glitter and eyeliner weren't reeeeaaally that usual. But honestly, I don't feel like it affects me that much and I don't really see the point of getting very upset about it. Disney is a company that needs to make money off its products, and beauty sells, so it's only normal that they would redesign a character to please the aesthetics of the majority of the public.

the Disney Princess line is just a Marketing Gimmick to push unrealistic expectations on young girls. much like Barbie Dolls were. i personally believe the line shouldn't have even been made in the first place. because it pushes a very romanticized ideal of the life of a princess that molds young girls into feeling princess like desires. a lot of the princesses in the line, were heavily modified to the point it totally warped the characters into a trope completely unrecognizable from what they were supposed to be, just as Merida shouldn't be added to the list, or at least shouldn't have been altered to the point it butchered the original character. the Same Thing can be Said about Jasmine and Mulan, of which bore very not princess-like traits. both of them being heavily butchered when they were modified to enter the line. i'm not saying we should ban the Disney princess line but i am saying we should consider the impression it has on primary school aged girls at such an early developmental stage in their life. plus, expose young boys to the line, and they will begin to idealize these "Princesses" as the epitome of beauty. being autistic, i tended to take exposure to the Disney princess line even more seriously. and before you say it is just a phase. there are disabilities that make it easier to make a longer lasting impression on a child. and the impressions we recieve as a child, affect our ideals for the rest of our lives. either driving us to rebel against the concept, or to try to embrace it and fail, because we aren't good enough for it. i'm a case of the latter. i was exposed to a variety of ideal circumstances and raised by a very strict and firm but assertive mother. because of her assertiveness, i inherited problems in trying to follow her standards. so i know what it is like to be forced to hold yourself to some ideal concept, only to realize you can never achieve it. Disney Princesses teach us a variety of very harsh and unrealistic values, that we shouldn't force our children to and shouldn't convince our children to hold themselves to. many angels who were once the purest beings in heaven, had a nasty habit of falling from grace because they were taxed by the standards. so a corporation like disney, really needs to weigh the consequences of things like the standards it takes to become a disney princess. because each girl in that line, instead of having their unique traits and quirks removed, should have them emphasized, but not flanderized.

other than the original 3 princesses ( Snow white, Cinderella and Aurora ) they have all gone on their own story path as the main character and don't just fall into a helpless damsel stereotype. and Barbie has done almost every job out there so she's hardly a bad role model most people's problems with barbies and disney princesses are they are thin and white ( barely anyone complains about tiana ) They are ANIMATED NOT REAL you can't base your own beauty of a fictional character because if little girls wanted to look like Bratz dolls there'd be a big problem.
@3fps28 жыл бұрын
+Mr Voncreep at one point people tried making realistic looking dolls because they thought Barbie dolls made little girls feel bad about themselves but honestly I would never want to be a Barbie doll because they're creepy! I mean their feet are constantly forever sloped their hands no more like their fingers are going to be stuck forever in the most uncomfortable position to hold only one item forever and don't even get me started on their make up just nice to see into your soul it's so creepy and there looks like take just a pink just take a pink pencil and just coloring on the lips because that is what the lips look like in their make up and then their hair it's just like it's all greasy and but they're so skinny it looks like they've never eaten and I would never want to be a Barbie doll so creepy of the list to play with them I killed Barbie in a videoon my family's KZbin channel (lilleyx6) yes I did just make a slight self promotion and I have no shame in that because we do not

Honestly I'm kinda with you in this dude. Redesigning Merida was a mistake on disney's part, but I do feel like there are more pressing issues to be upset about than this. I am an artist and I know for a fact that I'd be incredibly angry if someone completely ruined my own character, but I'm not in that situation. It doesn't affect me and I don't see much of a reason to care if that's the case. Though honestly the redesign does look really ugly actually. I dunno what it is about it, something about the make up just looks like crap to me. They really could've done better.

Sexualized? I'm sorry, (maybe its just that there's something I'm not seeing) but the two versions of her don't look any different to me. Like maybe she's aged a few years in the princess version but she isn't any more or less attractive than she was in the original version.
@drabonlady8 жыл бұрын
They put a litlle of blush, gave her long lashes, made her hair look like she actually brush it, her waist look a bit more slender and the hip part of her dress it's a little tighter and the neck of the dress is a little more open and down. It's not really sexualize. Sexualize is giving her bigger breast, lips, showing legs or underwear. The people complaining are mostly adult women bitching because they will never look this good or thinking little girls are stupie enoff to idolize dolls. The only time girls say they want to be like Barbie or other dolls is because they like the way the doll is dress or think the personallity is fun or cute. At least thats how I remember thinking when I was little. And honestly, if your worry your child is going want to be exactly like a doll you should probably close that tumblr page, turn your phone off and spend a little more time with your kids or younger siblings.

Or, y'know, maybe they don't want to be expected to fit into the mold of perfection that society has forced upon them or be viewed as nothing more than objects for the entertainment of heterosexual men. No, wait - if that were the case, we wouldn't have women trying to go around topless or have prostitutes lining the streets. God, this world is screwed.

I actually met the original creator of Merida when she came to a children's literature event at my university. She encountered a lot of issues working on Brave with the other directors, and she said that Brave was a very important story for her, and was created originally so her daughter would have a strong female who didn't end up with a prince at the end of her movie. She was also the first woman to direct an animated film for Dreamworks, Prince of Egypt. (She was co-director).
@jaylahrice15099 жыл бұрын
My thoughts on the subject were very similar to yours. Brave was one of those movies that really stuck with me. I wanted to be like Merida. I was only 12 when the movie came out. But now I know a bit more about the subject and I can honestly say I was so sad when they redesigned this character. She was perfect and stunning just the way she was! I mean seriously, look at her and tell me that she is not the cutest girl that Disney/Pixar gave to us! Another thing was that she was that she was not created to BE like this! Merida was supposed to be a strong, independent and brave! She is so go-go-go-go-come on-come on- come on! that she is obviously not the sort to be so.... SO! THAT! She is not like other princesses, she is something different, don't you think? I hated seeing her get so twisted and bent just so that she'd appeal more. She was perfect the way she was.

I don't really se the big problem in fact I didn't even started seeing the differences until much later and looking for images to compare, the other issue is just that the simple fact thet the redesign was made so Merida fit the artstyle that they use on this line of characters, the Disney Princess line of merchandise it's just not a list it's that, a line of stylized merchandize, think like Barbie, every single character it's redesigned to fit, just like what they did for Disney Infinite, every character was redesign to fit the more cartoonish look of the game, and I must say Merida looks bad on that game, it also reflects the style that the artist uses for his work on the Disney's Princess, sure it looks more girly but it doesn't diminish the fact that it's Merida, the bad ass princes that comes from a good movie full of homage to Scottish culture, she just looks prettier, what wrong about it? this pandering seems more related to feminizm and portrayal of woman than just "hey I don't like the redesign, it doens't reflect who Merida is and what she represents" If anything you should feel bad to what they did for Pocahontas redesign that is something to talk about

I agree with you about the whole misinterpretation thing, as well as with the artist's vision being changed. My view on the whole Merida's design thing is, well, it's disappointment. I liked Merida because she wasn't the typical Disney Princess. She was wild and brave and tomboyish. She wasn't into getting spiffied up because it took time out of her day that she didn't want to waste. She was adventurous and fun and loved to be out and about; exploring. The redesign rubs me the wrong way because Merida appealed to a certain group, but it wasn't what Disney felt needed to be appealed to. Being a tomboy myself, I related more to Merida than any other Disney Princess. I don't wear make up, I wear something comfortable without constricting my movement or being over the top fancy. I'm outgoing and adventurous and I loved Merida for being those things. The redesign, even though they claim it doesn't change who they are, it kinda does. Merida's redesign changed her from the tomboy we know and love into another generic and unoriginal Disney Princess. I loved her because she not only related to me, but she was also a creative idea and concept and veered from Disney's usual route. Changing her design to be more marketable changes who she is and how she was represented. It made her unoriginal and uninteresting, the exact opposite of what she was. In the movie she had this "take me as I am or not at all" attitude that I adored. Changing her design into a more feminine version (which turns the tomboy fans away) changed her attitude, or at least to me. Now she's no longer " take me as I am" because she was changed to appeal to others, which ruins the message overall. She was different, and because she was different, people who were also different loved her. Because of marketability, she's no longer different, and people will receive the message "Don't be unique because you won't be loved." It may not be intentional to send ot that message, but that's what I feel others will see it as because she was changed to be loved, in a sense. They were afraid she wouldn't sell, and so they changed her so she would.

I agree, heck, I rage when my far more talented friends than myself make changes to what I'm working on. I spent a few days working on a project BEFORE inking it, and a friend of mine erased and changed some details WITHOUT my permission. I was pissed. Sure I'm not the next Michelangelo, but I had worked hard on this project, and would have welcomed critiques to improve my skill, but instead I felt like the project had been scarred, and I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

merida, along with bravery, courage ect, was also the image that not all princesses had to be pencil thin and have huge tits! she was the symbol of some thing more for girls who are, for lack of a better word, chubby. showing that they were awesome how they were! she also was the first princess to reach out to tomboys, like myself, she wasn't all pretty and pink and frou-frou, she wasn't willing to be all girly either!!! when the changed her design it sent the message that to be happy or perfect, even if u are a tomoy, u have to were make up and a sparkly dress!!!! personally I find it outrageous, but I do understand that a majority of young girls would want a pretty glittery doll, there fore changes must have been made to fit the desire of the general population!

Technically, Merida is a princess. A Pixar princess, but a princess. I'm not saying this to ignore the issue, but I can see why people would get upset and take it the wrong way. The video isn't about redesign,it it about misinterpreting the character's very soul. Redesigns character's happen all the time, and more often than not their personality is still conveyed. Look at how many times Mickey mouse has been redesigned. He's never never been misinterpreted. Here,America has been completely misinterpreted. That was my point. I Pattinson the video. I am not giving mixed signals.

I AGREE WITH YOU!!! I would be heart-broken if something I created was re-designed. Art that someone made doesn't need to be drained of its original creativeness. The artist should shine with his/her art, not just watch it being taken away to fit some stupid rules. The character's heart and design shouldn't be squashed to be molded into some random princessy new form. Some people don't care about the hard work that was put in the art. They should know. And I hope this video helps them see that a movie, or any kind of art, doesn't just take 3 seconds to make! Well, some does, but that's not the point here. The point is that absolutely nothing, nothing, NOTHING, should taken away and ruined. You are unique, and so is everyone else. Art is YOU!

As an art major, I have to agree with you. I hate it when my professors change and criticize my work before they listen to my reasoning for doing what I have with a piece, however, if the creators truly wanted Merida to remain as she'd been created they should've stipulated that in their contract before they agreed to give Disney/Hasbro marketing rights. Disney and Hasbro are american companies, and therefore are COMMERCIALIST companies. Their primary concern is making money, and sadly, their target consumers are children who, apparently, want sparkly, pretty princesses that disney has, unfortunately, already created a set "image" for. This image has, most likely, been not-so-subtly based off of barbie dolls, the doll that every girl in america grew up with and loves (or loves to hate).

I get what you say when you say that character design is an extremely lengthy process, since I had a lot of friends in high school who were aspiring animators and they would spend HOURS and maybe even DAYS designing, redesigning, and re-redesigning their characters and giving them extremely in-depth back stories and personalities that matched their appearance. Before I met those friends, I honestly never paid attention to character design.

This is an older video (just discovered your channel so I'm going on a binge, of course), so I don't know if anyone is aware of this, but there is merchandise more similar to the original design now, and it's pretty awesome! I myself own a Merida doll in a practical green dress, who comes with a bow, an arrow, a quiver, and even one of those arm protectors used by archers. She does look a bit Barbie-like as far as her shape goes, but I can't exactly blame them for trying to copy the figure of the most popular doll series in the entire world. Still, though, she's much, much closer to the original design from the movie. I still don't think a dress is the most practical thing for a horseriding archer, but I guess a princess can do what she wants.

i personally am i feminist, and i think its really stupid when they get a strong female character and sexuality her, like you have to look pretty. its giving young girls a fake expectation.

I agree. This is a middle finger to the people who created her. They're basically saying, "Okay, here is something you worked so hard one and now we're going to change it completely." That and it seems like the market department doesn't even understand Merida as a character and that is what's most upsetting. She deserves respect.

If I made a character and someone took it and redesigned it, I would do as much as I can to have it at the original form because the original represents their personality, their way of thinking, and who they really are.

I agree, being a fellow artist, I know if someone took and changed one of my characters ((like if they took my pony oc and straightened her mane so she no longer looked spunky)) I would have an outrage, characters, especially animated ones, should loosely represent their personalities with their outside appearance...

i think the time has come for disney's merchandise department to step back and think if this is the best idea overall. While some of there characters do work with the disney princess marketting (looking at cinderella and snow white) but Mulan, Merida, and Pocahontas all turned away from the fancy styles that can be called the disney princess feel. Maybe as a compromise, split the princess line in two, half the princesses that (based on their films) fit the princess traditional line continue to be marketed as they have been, while the others start being marketed more in line with their film counterparts that families have fallen in love with. However, this may cost more money and effort then disney is willing to put in, when a ready to go plan is already going on

It feels like every disney princess gets a spa and sparkle treatment after their movies, like the victors in the hunger games and then presented all glossy and shiny. So no, this redesign does not bother me. Your accent is absolutely lovely.

I completely agree with you, when you started to talk about female disney characters not being recognized as princesses i said Meg right before you did and she is not the only one. I love the original (in movie) characters remarkably better than what they try to sell them as, so called princesses with, sparkling dresses and, long flowing hair. This is a serious matter and something needs to be done about it!

I agree that this is an issue that deserves the attention that it's getting. The requirements for what is deemed "marketable" should be updated to reflect the times instead of the standard from +70 years ago.
