Rediscovered this song this past year. Almost forgot about it, and I get mad at how many years went by that I didn't listen to it. This is what ALL rock ballads should aspire to be. RIP Layne, gone to soon.

I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne! The Rooster has a lot of meaning to me because My dad was a Vietnam Vet and ARMY GREEN was indeed no safe bet! RIP DAD ❤

I was 15 when this album came out and I’m so ashamed I slept on it until about 5 years ago. I was way more into Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana at the time. Genius album and Layne is likely the best vocalist of his generation. We were so lucky to have all of them, all at the same time.

MAD SEASON: RIVER OF DECEIT: The meaning of Mad Season: River of Deceit as sung by Layne Staley. Start off by saying this is about Layne’s drug habits particularly with Heroin! Think about it: The river(blood flow in your veins) takes down the Deceit (Heroin). If you read the lyrics now with this in mind and counter the fact this eventually led to Layne’s death is poetic. He KNEW he had a problem and was conveying that to the listener. My pain is self chosen. Pull off my skin and swim to shore…Heroin addicts pick at their skin. Shore represents being off the drug…now I can grow a beautiful shell (New Skin) for ALL TO SEE. Listen again with this in mind.

You can't save a person if that person doesn't really want to save himself/herself first. Layne can't be saved anymore. But sadly there are so so so many good persons like Layne in such a similar situation out there. You can still try and maybe save somebody if you're so honest and with such a kind heart.

What a song to subtly talk about the inner turmoil. Unfortunately, I was in jail with him in Seattle and he wasn't in the mood/state to receive praises from me, a true fan. I'll never forget this experience even being in the same room as as him despite him going through his own struggle at the time. His songs live in me forever.

He was in jail? I had read that he had a notebook scrawled with things like “My life is hell, I haven’t slept for two weeks, I haven’t been laid for a month and there’s a warrant out for my arrest.” I never knew what legal charges he was facing.

@@laffytaffy2916 I wish I knew. I might be able to look it up but this was so long ago. The sad part of it is that he was physically sick and vomiting I assume from detoxing. It wasn't a good situation or scene, for either of us. I only know it was him is because they called him by name to either get out or go to the medical side. I was shocked.

@@rast4man I found it, it’s on that popular place with the word RED in it, that when I type it, it disappears here. Anyway it was sooo many traffic vios, so many not having insurance stops, on his car and motorcycle, not wearing a helmet. He lost his DL for a long time. I guess when you are lost in addiction, keeping up with your car insurance isn’t on your to do list. It’s crazy King Co really left stuff up of rockstars, It has tickets for Cobain, Cornell, Krist from Nirvana, pretty much all speeding. But they’re all gone now, someone took a SS of it 6 years ago.
