In this video, we talk about a very important issue that many people face today: having a master's degree but still not being able to get a job interview. Our viewer, who has worked hard to earn their degree, shares their story and the struggles they face in the job market.
This video aims to highlight the challenges that many graduates experience when looking for a job. Despite having advanced degrees and qualifications, they find it difficult to even get an interview. We discuss the reasons behind this issue, including the job market's current state, competition, and the gap between academic skills and job requirements.
We also examine the role of networking and connections in job hunting. Often, job opportunities are filled through personal connections and referrals, which can put those without a strong professional network at a disadvantage. Another important point is the impact of location and industry demand. Some areas have more job opportunities than others, and certain industries may have more demand for specific skills.
We hope this video sheds light on the realities of the job market for graduates with advanced degrees. If you are facing similar challenges, know that you are not alone, and there are steps you can take to improve your chances of getting an interview and landing your desired job.

I’m a huge fan of starting your own company. I started my own cyber company just doing basic security awareness training for older people in my family and people in my community. When the time came, I was offered GRC duties at my job and it just grew from there. A lot of naysayers act like that’s cheating the system but it’s not. That’s legit experience and if you can speak to it intelligently you’ll probably be fine. I even let my employer know it’s my own company and I do it very part-time, they were fine with that. Be bold people. Create your opportunity, and at the least be ready for when that dream opportunity comes.

I'm sort of in the same boat myself. I got laid off from a tech job after working there for over 14 years. While working in the tech job, I was pursuing my master's in cyber and got laid off during my last semester. I've got a Security+ cert and even put a project on my resume that I did in the capstone in which I worked with a team to help out a government organization. I got a job offer as a cyber analyst that fell through because I couldn't obtain a clearance in the few weeks that they needed it. The only two offers I ever got after that was teaching at high school level and teaching at college level. Of course I opted for the college one due to better pay and more mature students. I'm afraid at some point that I'll get stuck in a rut with teaching that I can't get out due to lack of real world experience.

Possible "elephant in the room" in this case. The commenter says he has a Masters from the US and is "based there" - but doesn't mention his or her country of citizenship, or if he has a green card. A lot of cyber jobs require clearances, etc. With recent TikTok and Kaspersky scandals - it could be that potential employers are skittish about calling a non-citizen for an interview. And, as someone with a "foreign" name myself, just letting people know HOW to pronounce your name - or a nickname to call you that they find easy to pronounce - might help with call backs. Americans can be very shy about pronouncing unfamiliar names.

Companies encourage you to attend college so you can learn and they judge that as a baseline. If no one gives you your first job how do you get experience. Some companies don’t care about your projects or building computers at home. That’s just the reality. That’s why @Jorsten said everything is useless.

I think another good analogy would be... you have great armor and weapon that took you a lot of time to get but you only learned how to do the boss through tutorials/studies and never actually went out and tried it. Raid groups won't pick you up because they see you don't have actual experience killing the boss even though you studied for it.

The short, and likely disappointing to many, answer is that Cybersecurity is not an entry level IT field, no matter how many degrees, certifications, projects, or paid training courses you have. I’ve worked in IT for about 25 years, and the only exception to this is if you already hold active security clearance (typically obtained through military service). Government contractors are always in need of employees with security clearance (but they don’t want to sponsor and pay for people to obtain security clearance since it takes well over a year to obtain), so that is the only shortcut in the Cybersecurity field. If you don’t already have security clearance, you’ll have to work your way up in IT before landing a Cybersecurity role.

Here's the truth. Experience is what get you jobs. Your degree or certifications are only as good as your experience. A degree alone will not land you a job fresh out of college with zero experience with the exception of an entry-level support role which you can get without a degree.

Communication might have been part of the issue here. If this person has been sending this type of email, or if their resume is filed with similar grammatical errors, it does not give a good impression. They have or do not have cybersecurity skills/experience? As others mentioned, country of origin and immigration status might also be a problem. Does this person require sponsorship for a visa?

I feel like I am in a similar boat. I would like to break into cyber sec. I have a B.S in CompSci and M.S in Cyber.(WGU) so I have a few certs and some skill, but I have been doing dev ops for about 5 years and tech in general around 8-9 years. All my exp is in infra and automation…not so much in SOC specific task. I do have my own consulting company, but I typically help with pre-sales or cloud services. Do you feel like creating a few of my own projects would be enough, I do have some indirect experience but I know in today’s market that can be a tough sale. Side note I do currently work on security automation for a Fortune 500 company, but I am still very far removed from the analysts, threat modeling, plays etc. I WANT TO USE MY DEGREE! 😅

I like the wow reference Yeah basically you are looking for people who cleared the raid and you get whispered by a guy who said he hasn't cleared it but watched videos on it. Some people might want to take him in and show him the mechanics others will just move on to someone who actually cleared it that's basically the cybersecurity job hunt. Now instead of saying he watched videos on it and instead actually did the raid on the PTR and cleared it and knows all the mechanics then he will probably get invited

Real easy - don't go into IT or Cybersecurity. Go into a skilled trade and you will always have work and money. My friends that went into the trades are all living large while I am still trying to get a job. The IT job market is terrible, the expectations are unrealistic, and the HR Depts and hiring managers are clueless. Plus, we are seeing wages falling in tech which is compounded by rising inflation. Fuck IT/Cyber Security. Having gone through college getting a bachlors degree in cyber security, completing certifications along with having experience from 2 unpaid internships, I've yet to even land a job in the damn field. I poured blood, sweat and tears with my damn soul as well to break in and NO ONE WILL GIVE ME A FUCKING CHANCE. Despite having a bachelors, certs, internship experience and buidling quite a few home labs projects, nothing works. Waste of fucking money/time and I had only wished that I'd seen the writing on the wall sooner and pivoted to another field such as the medical field where the path/entry to employment is much more linear. Tech is a fucking joke, you hear those with absolutely no education/experience but they do a damn cert and get hired while others go into debt with school/certs and get rejected repeatedly. Like serious what the actual fuck is wrong with this field its so assbackwards, there are no entry level jobs they most definitely require some experience while they pay criminally low rates too.
