Gary Jules was a student of mine at UCLA. He gave me a burned CD of this song, with Mad World written on the outside of it. He gave me his album along with it. It was the month my second child was born, so I was rushing out of the classroom to take my wife to the hospital, and never listened to the song. When I finally did, I was so happy for Gary. Such a beautiful song from a great person.

Of course tears for fears was terrific back in the day, but this song really hit its stride when it was covered by Gary Jules for the movie Donnie Darko. If you look back at the original music video for Mad world with Tears for Fears it is good, but it's very fast-paced and something like Gary Jules' cover works a lot better with the tone and lyrics of the song.

@richlisola12 жыл бұрын
I think both versions went for different effects. The original juxtaposed the irony of upbeat music with dire lyrics. And that conflict is a truth of life, we are pushed to be happy when we are not. We feel glad and sad at the same time, this is life if you think about it. Whereas the cover, went right into the lyrics, and went for the pure starkness of those cutting, intensely down moments that bubble up in life. A song without peer for the end of Donnie Darko.
