She and my late mother were friends. My mom was a local gospel singer, and Madame Cooke would travel from Washington, D.C. to my hometown in Oxford, NC every third Sunday in November to be on my mom's gospel anniversary program. She always drew a huge crowd.

Rev Charles Taylor sent me some footage as a gift becausse he found out I'm still playing his music on my station. One afternoon I spent almost 3 hrs featuring him and will do it again this summer. Grateful you enjoyed this, Linwood

I love this lady! I never knew her and she didn't know me, but I am blessed that she lived. 2009 and the blessings rolls on! Come on youngens and let's learn what true worship is through a true relationship with our LORD.

She's my favorite gospel singer ever and I'm so happy that this footage is available. Despite the flaws in picture and sound this is priceless footage of an amazingly performer.

@MrKITCHENTALK: You're very fortunate to find that album. From my understanding, it's a very, very rare album.

It's hard to say whose backing her because many of our quartet singers got their start backing her. Tommy Ellison, Willie Banks and others were her "Singing Sons". She would change when needed. I interviewed Tommy Ellison 1n 1993 and he said she was an elegant, sweet and spiritual person who everyone respected. She died here in Philly and what a great loss to Gospel Music. Surely a church had an anniversary and someone filmed the program and there are more video of Edna Cooke singing that can be transferred to you tube from old films? Ask and you shall receive, with God all things are possible...

why they don't play the organ like that no more.

Most of her back-up quartets were already stars, like the Skylarks, the Swanee Quintet, the Nightingales w/Julius Cheeks, and others. They are not credited on her recordings now, unfortunately.

she was a smooth ainger but when she got fired up LOOK OUT!!!!!

She would alternate her background singers. Many would eventually go out on their own and form their own group

I don't know and I'm not a musican. Maybe they don't have that type of organ anymore. Perhaps a musican can better answer your question.
