I’ll echo the recommendations of dear John and wouldve could’ve should’ve (in that order!!) she wrote dear John when she was 19, after breaking up with John Mayer (who was 32) and then WCS last year when she was 32, now the age he was when they dated, reflecting. It’s a masterclass in storytelling both times. Also if you want one where she was the “bad guy” in the relationship check out Back to December! She knows when she’s owed an apology, but she also knows when she owes an apology. A hard lesson to learn!

When she talks about her dad saying "it's supposed to be fun turning 21" she is referring back to a song The Moment I Knew on her Red album which relays how he promised to come to her 21st birthday party and never showed - never told her he wasn't coming. Most of her discography is all related - she refers back to things in other songs and when you get to know her story they all mean so much more.
@MizukiLovesDraco11 ай бұрын
For me, the line "I'll forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" hit SO hard because I would literally keep myself so busy that I would never think about him until I did and when I did, I always romanticized our times together. I magically didn't remember any of the messed up things he did that caused me to leave in the first place. Then I would inevitably go back to him just to end up broken all over again and repeat the cycle. Also, to your point about repetition being hell, Taylor has quoted a saying that's something to the effect of "let your heart remain breakable, but never by the same hand twice" which I believe to be just such stellar advice for not just romantic relationships but friendships and familial relationships.
@nikkis7375 Жыл бұрын
Idk if anyone shared this but Taylor said she wrote this in one sitting and was just venting and this all came out of her mouth. Her mom said please tell me you were voice recording that! And they were lol and she shortened it for the first version and so grateful we got the original 10 min version now.

I love the repetitiveness of the song as it feels like she starts out with it being unconvinced with herself she's remembering it correctly as it she's been gaslight and then it ends with her repeating it to say to him I was there I do remember what you did... do you?!! So powerful 👏

Yes, the gaslighters can do "wonders" but once you've seen, you cannot unsee. The hurt is surreal, then you heal. The repetitiveness is like the whole process you go throught doubting everything and the worst of all: YOURSELF. "All too well" is pure healing for many of us.

The story about this 10 minute version: originally it's a little song on her Red album. She loved it but it never was a single, but she played it at her shows and people related to it so much. Then there was an interview she did around that time when she was talking about how it used to be like 10 minutes long, just her riffing with her band and it kept going and going, but of course you can't put that on an album, so had to cut it down. Ever since that interview, her fans have been asking about this 10 minute version, for years. When she decided to do the re-recordings, she included this on Red (Taylor's Version).
@eirinikomotini Жыл бұрын
20:38 there’s a double meaning in that, apart for the literal interpretation you gave… in another song she’s talking about thinking of leaving an emotionally abusive relationship and she says “gain the weight of you then loose it”… here she says she’s returning half her weight because she had his weight as well and now that it’s over she doesn’t anymore… her songwriting is absolutely genius! (Other song is Tolerate It, Evermore album - also a deep cut btw) Also, one of my favourite lyrics is “the idea you had of me, who was she, a never needy ever lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on you” which is such a fucked up thing to say, especially being Taylor Swift… she basically felt he was using her to be relevant in the media, steal a little of her thunder, but only wanted the image of being the guy who dates Taylor Swift without caring about Taylor as a person… and somehow it’s still so relatable in so many levels!

Yes, I was with a man who "love-bombed" me -- telling me all the time how we were gonna grow OLD together -- more like I got OLD after a few months. Exactly, "future faking" -- spot on! This song had me a forty-seven-year-old bawling I could relate so much. I'm telling ya though this woman could write a book. She's already a producer. It's like we empathic people are magnets for narcissists. It's like they can sniff us out. She wrote in another song .."I never trust a narcissist but they love me" -- Taylor Swift Also that lyric in All Too Well "And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" is SO relatable. Because isn't it the case how quickly we forget why we are better off without them when they talk us into taking them back? Great lyric!

When I don't look at the screen you sound like my brother. LOLOL Love the song, though. My favorite of hers. I'm new to the fandom but this one stuck in my brain. I spend a lot of time listening to people react to this song while I'm at work and you are the first person to mention the crumpled up piece of paper and the metaphor it symbolizes. I have waited what seems like forever for someone to bring that up. "I'm a soldier who returned half her weight" Referred to the anorexia she suffered from when she was young.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but this song is about Taylor and the actor Jake Gyllenhaal. She was 20 and he was 30. He broke up with her AFTER dating her for several months and said she was to young for him. The joke is that he has continued to this day to date women who are 20-22 years old and he’s in his forties now. Don’t confuse this relationship with another one that Taylor has had with John Mayer, she was 19 and he was 32, that didn’t end well either. She has not dated older guys after Jake. By the way,Taylor is 34 now, so a lot of time has passed, but some of her greatest songs have come from those relationships, she loves breakup songs and we love them too! Love your videos! So happy to have found you!💜
@lindak3030 Жыл бұрын
People gave her so much shit for "going through men" or only writing breakup songs, and she was portrayed as a slut but no one ever said "older men prey on this nearly a child/barely adult repeatedly" which is what was actually happening.

the reason this song makes me cry is because, she is so vulnerable. sharing something that happens to allot of us. this is about a young women head over heels and chooses to give over her innocence. because in her heart she thought he was the one that was going to love her forever. right here in this line from the song. (But you keep my old scarf from that very first week because it reminds you of innocence, and it smells like me You can't get rid of it. 'Cause you remember it all too well, yeah.

In a world where SO many music stars are perfectly designed products by record labels, its easy to assume when you see a big star that they are too!
