That was a terrific version of the song. I've never heard it sung it quite the same way. Forceful, compelling. I really liked the way she did that mic too. She fastened it right below her "shoulder"; it became a glittery part of the outfit. It won't be the last time we see that idea. There is some real talent here.

Maddy mentioned Rihanna's alto voice and then she gives us her own rich darker tones that are totally supported and full of depth and feeling. Stay is a painful song that doesn't have a morbid structure. Maddy puts the sadness and cry in her vocal. Maddy also gives some interesting inflections and grace notes into her upper chest belt and falsetto. This was as good as I've heard this song ever performed. Rihanna had to sing this song in short little phrases, but Maddy has incredible breath control and so the emotion of the song kind of unravels AND builds. Lots of the performances were pitch corrected before broadcast tonight which is why there was less enthusiasm from the audience AND the judges. Maddy sang beautifully. She didn't need the pitch correction. She is one of three people who can win the show this year. And the ONE most likely to succeed in the industry.
