In this final episode of Fully Charged Show's 6 part series “Maddie Goes Electric” - a beginner's guide to electric cars, Maddie Moate chats to Robert Llewellyn to share her experiences of getting and living with her first electric car.
Robert (a long-time electric vehicle driver) wants to know:
How easy was it to rapid charge the Kia e-Niro on a long journey?
Why did Maddie choose to call her new electric car Robert?!
What was Maddie’s biggest gripe with driving an EV?
Would Maddie ever go back to driving a petrol/gas vehicle?
What advice would Maddie give other people looking to get their first electric car?

I love Robert from his Red Dwarf days, Scrap Heap Challenge, and then later Fully Charged. My 4 year old son got me into Maddie from her shows on CBeebies. What a lovely clash of worlds this was for me! And also really, really helpful, as to the realities of the switchover to an Electric Car. Something I hope I'm able to do in the near future. Thanks Fully Charged Team!

I’ve been following Robert & Fully Charged since I was looking into buying my first EV six years ago - I bought a new 2014 Nissan Leaf 24kWh. It was his advocacy that persuaded me to take the plunge. Shortly after that I got a second Leaf for work. Between the two I’ve covered 170,000 miles by EV. I’ve *really* enjoyed Maddie’s series because, firstly, she’s not a cynical old fart like me, and secondly because she’s been so honest about it all. This is properly good content. Well done. When the ID3 hits the streets, give it to Maddie. Fill the car with her friends, give them a decent journey to cover (I don’t know - send them to try out the charge points in Dundee or something) and ask her: is this the Electric Car for the People?

"She drug her feet a bit before she bought into it completely." Pedantry aside, I know what you mean here - and isn't that always the way with anything new? People have this irrational emotional investment in the way things _are_ and resist any kind of change, even when you run through the math and show them in purely objective terms how this other way is simply _better._ And isn't even that new, or radical. And statistically _everyone_ who's done it the other way, regardless their politics or demographics or any other factor, loves it so much they would _never go back._ Which is why the people who are actually invested in keeping things going the old, objectively inferior way are so desperate to play up the general resistance to change. I'm not *just* talking about EVs vs internal combustion here...

Maddie is just so _charming_ and it's been fun to watch her journey. (Even if parts of it did feel like adverts for whichever company's PR person she was talking with.) I _know_ that this isn't the end of it. It's just the beginning. There will have to be periodic updates, milestones, reports of particular events, mishaps, surprises and what-not. I look forward to them all. I enjoy all the nerdy tech stuff and Robert's Rants(tm) and all the rest of it, but for purposes of getting someone who _isn't_ into all that stuff into an EV, this is the series I will be pointing them to.

I've had an electric car for over 2 years and watched all 6 episodes of this, they've been great. I had the exact same problem as Maddie on my first long drive, the day after my lease car arrived, a Drive Electric car too. My very first Rapid charge was at Ferrybridge, in the middle charger with that very same Rapid, I was so chuffed how easy it was until I returned to my car to find only a few more miles were added. I also did lots of research before getting the car. I soon learned after that to use the CCS and I've loved driving ever since. Great series, thanks.

Hi Maddie! I love watching your videos, I have had an electric car for 2 years now and its easily the best decision I have made, I have a 40 kW Nissan Leaf Tekna but the best bit is we also installed a Zappi charger with solar panels + electric storage so the cost of running the car is virtually nil. If anyone is thinking about going electric don't think about it do it because it is the future, all the big car manufactures are now getting involved and making new electric cars, and I can tell you they would not be doing that if they were not already convinced themselves that the future truly is electric. One point is hardly ever mentioned about EV's and that is that they are almost *silent* ! It's much less tiring for people inside the car, nice for people who like to play music while driving and great for people who use the handsfree phone while driving. It's also silent for people outside the car, think of people living in urban area close to a busy road. The more EV's, the less sound nuassance those people will have to endure from ICE vehicles.

Arfan Ali I changed my car first. Financial no brainer. Less than £1,000 spent on “fuel” in 4 years, some 42,000 miles ago. The financial jury is still out on solar PV and the battery. I have all three now, one leading to the other. Solar PV and house battery take many years to pay back the capital investment. However, it is intuitively just the right thing to do to help tackle climate change effects by burning less. And with each technology, I just wonder how I ever managed before without them.

@@maddiemoate especially after the recent electricity price rises! Would be very topical. Most people have gone from roughly 13p/kWh to 22p+/kWh. But if you have an electric car you can be on Octopus and paying 5p/kWh at night. If you have solar + a house battery then you can get through Spring-Summer-Autumn days. In winter you can charge it off the grid at night and draw it down during the day. Either way you're avoiding the 22p/kWh peak time! Also, the extra solar can heat the immersion tank during the day / charge a car - so cutting back on gas usage too! My installer can now get 385w JA Solar panels for under £100 each! You now only need 11-12 panels to hit 4kW. Though I do recommend installing as many as will fit on your roof!

Hey Maddie!! Just finished your series here in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and it was great. While some of your show was obviously UK centric as to EV Car models available and your apps we have comparable stuff over here. It was "Deja Vu all over again" as I relived exactly some of my experiences of just 2 years ago when I joined the EV world. The only thing you missed was "Maddie suffers Range Anxiety" (car down to 10km range and beeping to remind you of same while you drive about in the dark with your 'locate a plug app' and rapidly beating heart) which I survived and vowed never to relive. My VW e-Golf is exactly the right car for me and as I always tell people who ask how I like my EV ... "I'm never going back to the ICE age". (as an EV owner you will now get the reference and joke) Thanks for doing this series and I'm going to share it with all of the EV curious folks I meet.

Excellent series packed full of vital information for those of us considering a swap from ICE to EV. Maddie is a fabulous and charismatic presenter who we will hopefully see a lot more of on this and other channels.

Hi Maddie and Robert, You both are doing an amazing job educating people about the wohole sustainable energy ecosystem. Thank you for this. It is nice to see relatively small 'media operations' like yours really beating up old media in covering this revolution. You are a large part of the reason i'm studying sustainable innovation at Eindhoven University. Calculus has been a bit challenging but i'm still convinced I made the right choice. Once again thank you for all the free, high quality content over the past few years and I look forward to your next video. My dream is to work on projects similar to yours: Educating people about sustainability and helping the world transition to a better future. I hope you can keep up your great work.

I Bought an Kia E-Niro after watching this beginners guide. We love our EV so thank you Maddie and team. We have noticed an increase in the number of EV’s in the last few months. One of our frustrations has nothing to do with the e-Niro but with the charging network. We had to go to three different charging stations this week to get a single charge. The first was a New BP Pulse where both chargers where out of Action the next was a Shell Recharge Station where a Tesla had just beaten us to it. We eventually got a charge at a GeniePoint. I wonder if Maddie could do an update video a year on? As a side note, the BP Station had 10 Fossil fuel pumps with only one car filling up and the Shell Station had 8 Fossil fuel pumps. That’s 18 Fossil fuel pumps and only 3 charging Stations (with 2 not working). This ratio needs to change very, very soon otherwise I can see a big negative story for new EV Drivers. We should be putting the same number of charger as Fossil fuel pumps at each station. Could fully charged do a video on this maybe.

Just wanted to say, that one year on this video is still worth while. I've been following FC for a while and have learnt a lot from all the videos, but my wife was toying with the idea of getting an EV and was getting confused. I suggested she watch these videos and by the end of the third in the series, she was convinced to move to an EV. Skoda Enyaq ordered today! Thank you so much for a great series on a great channel. Excellent series, for a follow up, perhaps a long term test review style regular updates on what it's been like to live with the car over a year, driving it in winter, in summer, in heavy traffic, through a city/congestion zone, taking a journey over to Europe etc.

Really enjoyed the series. So much stuff online about EVs is American men of a certain age doing roadtrips with a Tesla. A nice practical series like this has me sold on EVs. Awaiting the ability to charge an EV without off-street parking.

I'll never forget the bank of england visit many years ago. Liked this series very much, not least because I ordered a Kia in June delivered in late Nov. Zappi charger because I have 4Kw solar panels from 7 years ago. Added a device to heat hot water in surplus periods too in our totally electric house. Keep up the good work people, helping others in the real world.

Fantastic series guys! What I like most is that it makes buying an EV so compelling, which I think aligns with your channel's goals perfectly. Maddie does a great job of projecting excitement, engagement and clarity and the episodes and editing felt bang on. Would love to see this style applied to other initiatives. Well done.
