Dustin Cieszecki There's so many flaws in your argument. For one, George Washington is the reason to why we are no longer a part of England. He's the one who led the army against them and was the first president. Yes, he was a slave owner, but he's also a man of his time. That's like hating on a well-known, decorated scientist who also happened to be a sexist. Does that mean you should abolish his findings? No, of course not. George Washington and our other founding fathers shaped this nation and made it what it is today. What did the confederate soldiers/generals contribute into our current society? Nothing. (Correction: the confederate soldiers who survived came back and created the KKK. So that's something). They're losers. They lost. I'm not going to give out participation trophies to a bunch of losers who lost. They were enemies to the state. If they won, then sure - praise them. But they did. They gave up. In fact, we have rather large memorials, a lot of museums and lessons in school dedicated to German history, specifically to the painful part. We try to educate the current generation about the crimes and suffering of their ancestors. We build memorials to our victims instead of monuments idealizing the perpetrators. We hope to prevent future genocides, at least on German soil.

As a young child, I remember learning about the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation and slavery, and even Martin Luther King, Jr. and the marches for equal rights and riots and Rosa Parks, and thinking, "Those people from so long ago were dumb. Who would ever think how someone looks on the outside matters more than what's inside? I'm glad we got over that!" Then, of course, I realized these things did not happen in the very distant past, but are still a huge issue today. Yet my befuddlement remains. I can't fathom or parse out how people could be so hateful based on skin color alone. As with good food or Christmas presents, the wrapping doesn't matter, so long as there's something awesome on the inside. And in that, hatred and obstinance are universal among human, regardless of race or culture. You can't judge who is or isn't based on skin, but by how they treat others and carry themselves through life. I can only hope a stronger message of inclusion and support influences those who would rather stew themselves in hatred and bigotry.

I wish this problem had a simple solution, but it doesn't. It's hard to overcome ignorance, fear, and hate, because they're easy. Overcoming them takes work, and it's up to each individual to do the work. And people who long for the days of slavery don't sound like people who want to do the work. They want someone else to do it for them.

That's not bad, and the only thing I'd add is that the Civil War and Reconstruction did nothing for the situation (and probably made it worse). As losing the war gave the opportunity to set up a further mindset of being victims to the federal government who came in and destroyed their homes, livelihood, and economy. Sadly the rest of the nation afterwards proceeded to use segregation as well keeping minorities to ghettos.

Larry Megel Your mistake is typical US American: you do not see beyond your own country. I am living in Europe. My ancestors were farmers and servants, mostly. If I have relations to slavedom in my family, then at most in the form of village people in the mid 16th century often being tied to a certain landowner (rural nobility), but even this is improbable because most land in my region was owned by large monasteries. - But that's a total side question. The issue here - that of course many do not understand - is that 250 years of race-based slave economy in the US leave their traces in a society's subconscience. Of course nobody living today has personally owned slaves, and therefore has direct guilt in this sense. But the tauma of basic injustice is present in US society. I see the current white supremacy disease as a symptom of this societal trauma. US society as a total feels and knows that there is a huge, fundamental wrong in their past. One (lazy) way of dealing with this is maintaining a belief that dark skinned people were categorically worse than light skinned ones. With such a belief one does not need to think about one's own or one's family's possible involvement. By the way this is also a trauma for the dark skinned part of the country: they have to live with the depressing awareness that their ancestors were slaves, brought from Africa etc., for sure. That's not a family history to be proud of and to feel good about. The USA have to do something to give also their dark skinned citizens the chance to feel the happiness of being proud of themselves, and their ancestors. This requires of course accepting them today as equal members of society.
