Hello, I have a commercial painting that I bought at Goodwill. I love the frame. Can I use these same steps to cover it? It looks like the canvas has a film over it to make it shiny.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 5 ай бұрын
The shiny stuff is most likely a varnish coating... which can be removed with an art varnish remover. Once the varnish is removed you can paint on top and be good to go. If you wont want to do those steps... you can paint on top of the varnish but the paint will most likely crack and fade in a within a few years.

Yes I paint on them all the time for final pieces or commission BUT generally for YT videos I use cheaper canvases. Its easier for my to work with when I have to changes camera angles and lights and such. When if comes to painting a canvas wrapped frame... Its basically the same... just remember to paint the edges and such.

I used a soy stripper gel I've had for yrs that really eats paint. But I scrubbed it too hard with a bristle brush, and it was hard to get the gel off and I ended up being able to see thru the canvas in spots. I'm hoping I can just add several layers of primer and get it back to a usable state. It's a large one. I don't have tons of money for canvases right now because I've spent about 300 on paints and supplies to get started 😳
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Never used a soy striper gel before ( sounds intense ha ha ha). Generally scrapping my canvas and adding a wash of thinner cleans it good enough for me to use again. If you need some cheaper painting surfaces. Check out this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roCto6x9bbOnraM

Hi can you tell me the best type of light to use when painting at home at night
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 2 жыл бұрын
If you have the option - Soft Natural daylight is best. Just all the sun to shine through the windows and bounce off the walls and your good. This way you get soft light and it doesn't shift your paints or strain your eyes. If you paint at night and daylight balanced light will do.

If its acrylic Yes you can! However if its oil - just paint over with oil and wait for it to dry OR scrap it clean and add LW too it and how you have a great practice canvas.

So, i did a painting and set it aside and came back to it and decided I didn't like it. I want to re-use the canvas but the paint is now set. Can I still scrape it off or better yet is there an oil on oil approach to reusing the canvas, since I can't apply gesso on top (acylic on oil is a no-no, right)? The canvas is completely dry.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
So some people out there say you can sand oil paint down so you can paint on top of it again. While that is true, to me thats not a healthy route to take. You are more than ok to paint on top of oil with more oil. If i was you... I would just leave it a long and save it as a reference. Now paint the exact same thing on a new canvas. When complete you have a before and after that you can use to measure your growth or learn from.

You can do that for practice canvases only. Adding gesso or acrylic on top of oil makes for weak adhesion at times ( thus your paint can chip and break off ) over time.

I just started painting yesterday...was a fun experience...used this tutorial kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4WvnaeCfbtglbs but as I did, all the colors was mixing with the liquid black and white. So I guess that I applied too much of it. Is there a way to save this? So even if I continue painting on that canvas I'm just wasting more of my colors. So can I safe this canvas, since it is completely soaked with the liquid mediums?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
Nic is a great teacher ( he taught me in a few classes ). Dont worry to much about making a perfect painting for your first one JUST ENJOY THE JOURNEY :). If you think your canvas is soaked with medium just let it tacky up for 12 to 36 hours and then paint on it. What I would do is just... take what you learned from your 1st and apply it to your 2nd painting. I think you will be amazed at how much better it is.

That you will have to test yourself - if you over soaked it. Might be perfect to continue from there after it tackys up a little OR you might have to re-wet it. Test it and see.
